I honestly didn’t find most of the book scary or disturbing, I don’t get scared by most horror I read or watch, having consumed so much of it that the gore scenes didn’t really affect me, but goddamn was it tragic. I cried at the suicide scene. I found that the backdrop of AIDS and HIV also really added something to the story, I was pleasantly surprised by the discomfort of some of Luke’s perspective in particular. The parts to me that felt more horror filled were not the murder or necrophilia or cannibalism, but the scenes with Luke who refused to die, felt his body decaying, more or less acknowledged he was a shitty person with limited time but did little to change it, and what he did do at the end (trying to get Tran back) was still a result of his negative character flaws and a lack of change, and ultimately futile. The horror of mortality, knowing you have a disease running through your body that people see you as deserving and police not giving a shit about Tran are the very real horrors of their time, and I think the ambience had to be one of my favorite parts of this book, because it does such a good job at not being too subtle but not being too in your face, fits in perfectly. Poppy Z. Brite is definitely a very unique horror writer, the story was filled with dark ambience and well written characters, and I look forward to reading more of his work

So underrated

i don't think that Dante was bi. first, he talks about wanting to marry a boy -- even if he were bi, that's a very gay oriented bi worldview especially in the 80's. second, in the two times he kissed someone else he was actually thinking about Ari which with the girl is significant. if you're bi in the 80's you'd definitely consider the easier path especially with what was going on with AIDS, but for Dante that just didn't seem possible. Ari is much more, uh, inscrutable. he doesn't allow himself to have feelings for anybody so it's really hard to say what he's actually open to. all we know is that he's repressing his love of Dante and has no interest in all the rest.

I'm listening to you talk about this book because I finished it, power-read the sequel, and now I feel like I have a hole in my life because I miss the characters. Second book had some things that bugged me with the characters' voices, but it somehow completely broke my heart (that's not even a spoiler, but I think I just projected out into their future and what I think may happen after the book ended and my imagination isn't as happy as what I want for them).

Reading this at the moment, and it has been amazing so far. PJ Vernon has a knack for storytelling that keeps you wanting more. Hope youll be in the adaptation if it happens! ❤

This book it's like.. a piece of heaven or something like that. It's amazing ari and dante❤, and almost every other character. I'm so scared to read the second book, because the first was very emotional... imagine the second. (or maybe my mind is protecting me from some strong moment or something). I'm really looking forward to the film.❤

Hands down the greatest coming-of-age story of all time, and to this day the only story that's actually accurately described what it was like to be 15-16. I also love the sequel.

It is literally like free therapy to me. I have grown emotionally with this marvellous story, and I could not be the person I am right now if I hadn’t read it when I was 15. I will be forever great full to Benjamin Allire Saenz for writing it, and rn I’m just super super excited for the movie coming out in September 8!!! I will definitely cry hahahaha so far the trailer it’s EXACTLY as the book, and I’m sure it is gonna be the best adaptation of a book to the big screen ever 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

I’m looking forward to reading this book. A friend/acquaintance of mine who’s currently serving a 26 year prison sentence for child molestation emailed me tonight and said that this book was amazing, very popular in the prison, and said that I need to read it. As a conservative business owner, this usually isn’t my type of book, but also, as a father of 5 kids (4 boys), I’m looking forward to discovering something new and being a more knowledgeable and understanding individual.

I think you are looking at the story through a modern lense. Even tho it's a modern retelling i dont think Madaline has a responsibility to fix the societal problems of the time. In the same way we wouldn't have slaves skipping and masters being nice in a retelling of roots

I love this book so much and I’m excited to see you’re talking about it!!

The sad part is, it was my first english book, my first lgbt book(which is not a graphic book) and also the first book that made me feel shitty about myself. Mostly because it is my comfort book(i have problems I can see it now). But, even if it has red flags, I would recommend it to any teenager with problematic/toxic love life, so they can feel at ease, cuz this book is about them, and they are not alone with these problems. I hope they can find the way out of these problems and relationships
