The Goddess Tailtiu - Irish Mythology Storytelling - Lughnasa Special - Episode 256
Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast.
This episode focuses on a forgotten Goddess in Irish mythology. We celebrate Lughnasa or Lughnasadh as the first harvest day, but there was once a greater celebration known as the Tailteann Games in Meath and all over Ireland. These games were in honour of the Goddess Tailtu, foster mother of Lugh, whose name we remember as the God of the summer sun and the archetypal mythic warrior… but what of his favourite foster mother?
Today’s episode is dedicated to Tailtiu as we are in the middle of August, which in Irish is the month of Lughnasa. We will resume our Fianna series in the next episode after this story.

    I don’t know who came up with this myth, but I know it was a man 💀. I’m dying to know a) do they seriously think women fight by thwapping each other with our tits or something? And b) did… did they know that milk isn’t just… in there all the time? Brichiu. The honored mythical ancestor of male writers who all seem to think our breasts are more expressive than our faces.

    Regarding if the Morrígan is the mother of Brigid, I don’t really personally think that She is, but I definitely do feel like they share kinship in some way. I really like the Boann idea, and while I definitely see the point regarding aspects of war, Brigid has always felt to me like She aspires towards a particular sort of justice which seeks to right wrongs and correct inequalities, and as that sometimes requires fighting to protect someone or something, warriorship can absolutely arise as a necessity. Thus Her warriorship might arise as a direct result of her other aspects, rather than parentage. Still, even if we discard all of that, An Dagda is absolutely a fearsome warrior in his own right. That being said, I do feel like who the mother of Brigid is has less importance than we give it. Her being raised by an otherworld cow is part of what shaped Her, and I feel like the deeper symbolism there can be lost if we focus too hard on parentage.

    Thanks for yet another wonderful video! While not explicitly linked to Lughnasa, in Waterford we have the Spraoi festival each year over the August bank holiday weekend and it seems like a natural evolution of the ancient festival. Games, the arts, crafts, music and feasting take over the town for a whimsical weekend that ends up bringing the whole city together for an end of summer final hurrah. It's hard to say if this was an intentional connection, but it seems blatantly obvious now! I'd love to see it evolve into actively embracing that Lughnasa connection in the future.

    Crúach is a haystack, but how Crom Crúach became Crom Dubh or how he became associated with Lughnasadh seems a bit of a mystery. Tailtiu is also said to be associated with the harvest, but not sure if she was the original subject of the Aonach or Lugh. Máire MacNeill's work is really remarkable. Great video! <3

    So my little pagan community on discord has been discussing what all we’re planning on doing, and sadly because we’re all a bit scattered across several continents we can’t do anything together in person, but generally several of us individually are making offerings to Lugh, Áine, and Tailtiu, hiking up a hill in the direction of the sunrise right at dawn (one is even doing this at a local hill with a standing stone), and lighting fires for part or all of the day, from dawn till dusk. Personally I’m in a household where it’s less than friendly towards non-christian religious practices (as in I’ll get kicked out if caught unfriendly) so I’ve got to keep it fairly low key, so in addition to my daily devotional practice to the Morrígan, I’m making incense and berry offerings to Lugh and Áine (and maybe Tailtiu, though they’re getting an incense stick each and that’s a lot of smoke for one room), and lighting candles while I do it. Then I’m going to be giving your stories on Áine and Lugh another listen, probably tomorrow rather than Thursday since I’ll have more time to, and continue my language studies. Maybe I’ll dedicate my repairs at work tomorrow to Tailtiu as well, to bring personal skills into it as well. I hope y’all have a great Lúnasa, and thank you as always for the work y’all do (:.

    So I try to comment when I have a thought to try and boost y’all in the algorithm as a way of supporting when I’m broke (which is all the time), so I’ll say my thoughts regarding Catholic vs Pagan Irish national identity and the abuses of power by the church, but I also want to clarify that I’m an American and thus actively colonizing another land so my opinion doesn’t really matter, and I’m missing crucial cultural context by never even having visited the island. All that out of the way, you can’t really turn the clock back on history and culture and even if the pagan camp had won out and that became the most influential religious/ spiritual outlook in Ireland, you’d still have the after effects of colonialism, all of that generational trauma, all of that culture instilled by the church, and a bunch of people raised Catholic and Protestant and everything else, so I don’t think it would really change a great deal, I think that without a reckoning of the trauma inherited from hundreds of years of just some of the most brutal shit and everything else, an institutionalized paganism would probably be rife with many of the same abuses that we’re seeing with the Catholic Church, because both an institutionalized Irish paganism and the Catholic Church are populated by people, and you’re gonna have to deal with that no matter what deity or deities those people worship. That’s besides the fact that unless you had some mass abandonment of the church, you’d still wind up with forcing a bunch of people to abandon the beliefs their families have had for generations, and isn’t that a huge part of what those of us upset with St Patrick and the church are upset about? As a pagan who worships the Irish gods and studies the language and the myths and cares a great deal about Irish sovereignty, I think the problem is the church has too much power, not that paganism doesn’t have enough, and the best case scenario is just to let people be and just continue to fund cultural development and research into irelands past. It doesn’t have to be one thing or the other. You CAN just love Ireland and all that comes with it, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

    There are at least a handful of stories that make me glad I’m not a woman in Irish myth, and this is certainly one of them, but really when I think about it what do the myths do but hold a mirror up to ourselves and the society we live in? Sure they entertain and teach and all of that but the lot of women hasn’t improved much in much of the world, and there are still plenty of men (and people of all genders, men don’t have a monopoly on inter-partner violence) like the druid in the story here, and yea, they’re dangerous and more numerous than you’d think and shit sucks.

    As a white American (and I only specify that because different cultures and communities here have different relationships with death) my relationship with death is honestly awful, and I’m genuinely terrified of it to the point of regular intense panic attacks. As a way of trying to deal with that, a huge part of my Irish pagan practice is trying to essentially rehabilitate my relationship with death and approach it in a more healthy and curious way rather than denying it altogether. To this end, I really like the concept of keening, and it’s something I want to (respectfully) learn more about and maybe even find a way to integrate it in someform into my own practice.

    For me as someone who grew up in cow country here in the US, I think there’s plenty of room for both cows can be a bit silly, as they’re playful and curious and can have best friends and can be quite affectionate with their owners, I’ve even met a cow who was vocally quite insistent she be petted and loved on by anyone who passed by her and she was quite sweet and cute, but also cows absolutely are incredibly important and absolutely sacred because of their importance to dairy and agriculture. We get milk, meat, leather, and fertilizer from them for years and even one cow can go a long way towards sustaining a small family.

  • @CutieBanana09
    @CutieBanana09 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Honestly your version of it (not that I’ve read any of the original versions yet) really makes me feel like it’s a decent metaphor for living with unhealed trauma. Balor here very much feels like a victim at the beginning, a child not knowing what was going on got a terrible evil inflicted upon him and while he wanted love and all good things, he carried that evil with him and it gnawed at him and without any help for that which plagued him, he allowed it to turn his actions more and more monstrous. He didn’t get proper help, he was clearly still around those that had inflicted the evil upon him and they still haunted his ears, and despite wanting to be kind, hurt the ones he loved. The part of him that wasn’t poisoned by the eye was kind and loving and caring, but when around those that hurt him and without help dealing effectively with the poison from his eye, his actions became increasingly harsh and cruel. The cycle of inflicting evil continues, until it’s broken by Lugh.

    this was awesome as is everything you do! the breaking out of hell reminds me of the novel "the amber spyglass" who's intent was to criticize the notion of afterlife and the christian god, set in a world of christian beliefs where the afterlife resembles more so haidou / erebos in spite of those beliefs. the protagonists literally cut a way out of that realm to allow the dead to escape and enter in more of less a state a nirvana. anyway, i'm just gushing, these type of stories are alway a thrill!
