Type 1 runs Marathon with t:slim X2 insulin Pump | Grunt Beach Marathon 2024 | Elements Running
Firstly a huge thanks to Mathilde, Matt Archer and wife Ro for supporting.
This was my first ever marathon wearing an insulin pump for my Type 1 Diabetes. The marathon was 42.2kms all on the sand starting at Southport Spit wall, down to Kurrawa surf club and back, twice!
The headwind got upto 39.5kmph, and didn't we know it.
Such a great event. The t:slim X2 insulin pump working in combination with the Dexcom G6 CGM (continual glucose monitor) had a few teething problems but it's a work in progress and my blood glucose level was pretty good for the whole marathon.
Managed to get on the podium in 3rd place!!!

This year's event was SO much better than last year- and great crowds.
Yes 100%, I thought the crowds on some parts were a lot less than last year which may be due to the earlier start time but the finish was great for crowds
I found the crowds very sparce until the last .2 kilometers.

Great vid as always, definitely got to run this one sometime!
Thanks mate, hope you do
Well done you did it again this year, a few friends did it, definitely much better weather than last year
Thank you, yes def perfect marathon weather albeit the wind
great video as a marathon runner but slower; id be concerned that these measures would increase the cost significantly ; some of these events are getting to the point that more amateur local runners are opting out ; and at end of the day those thousands of runners who only run for fun so to speak are the ones who create pay for these events; they are happy to pay to run the distance but some of these events are getting pretty expensive
Hi, yes, some ultras are getting very expensive but most marathons are around the $180 mark, you get good nutrition, a t-shirt and a medal fro your accomplishment and sometimes so other extras. Lets hope they don't slowly creep up in price🤞
Great vid, that water fall looked epic
@@stevenwoolley wish I had more time to enjoy it
Hey! Met you at the coastal high on the weekend (Georgie, also type 1 diabetic). Hope your run went smashingly!
Changing to North Sydney Park should make the start and toilets a non-issue. No complaints about the hills. Boston and New York are hilly. Don't have to be pancake flat to be a major. Date change would be tricky with City2Surf mid August. But agree, last year was unbearable. Glad they've scrapped the Half. Do Sydney Half in May if that's your thing. BTW GC has the 10k on Sunday. Closing roads for 2 days in Sydney would not be viable. I think 2024 will be a vast improvement. Here's hoping for no heatwave.
This year's start was a vast improvement, just like other majors. The only issue with toilets was that when you went through to holding pens this year there were no toilets.
@@ultradiabetic the B/E pen had toilets. Or do you mean the starting pen just before take off? We weren't in there very long.
Good luck…hope you get your 3:20!
Thanks Amanda, gonna give it a red hot crack!
Great pacing!!
Thanks Amanda, abit fast but hard to judge on that course and running for so long.
Great video…shows the beautiful course and magnificent weather on the day…I did the full marathon and the 5-hr cutoff was great motivation to keep running up the hills and not give in to a walk!! Made it with over 16 minutes to spare. Thanks to the organisers and volunteers for putting on such a great event!
Well done Amanda, was a perfect day for a marathon. Don't forget to subscribe. Thank you

Good luck mate, will be following on the app.
Magic, will do you all proud
Hey man, as a t1 who's just got into running some decent distances, I would love a video thats just a more high level set of thoughts on running as a t1d. I feel like there's lots of lessons I've not yet learned, like how you're running with an insulin pen, as having high BG is absolutely BRUTAL on a run, but its a bit counterintuitive as id normally not want insulin anywhere near me on a long run. I feel like you have some wisdom but your videos are usually much more on the training than the t1 -- just thought I'd say I'd be interested and appreciate learning from your experience (obv not medical advice but you have experiences!). Best of luck on the marathon!
Thank you and yes I agree I need more T1D content so I will endeavour to produce one targeting points like you have raised. You may like one of my earlier videos if you scroll down the list which does talk about having insulin before exercise and why.
Great video, and I agree with all of your points. I was shocked at how many people were publicly urinating before the start of the race - yuk! I was running around the 4hr group, and the water stations were overwhelmed with crushes of runners. Volunteers did a great job, but water was an issue.
both toilets and waterstations have been fixed for this year. aswell as the start time. good luck breaking 3:30 this year

Would be interested to hear your thoughts now that they've announced some changes for 2024! Absolutely wild that the year before you ran it there was another 100m of elevation.. It was so brutal! Totally agree with you for the date change. It's currently just after the cut-off to be a qualifier for the following years' Boston Marathon, so even a week earlier would be great for weather and for BQs.
Thanks Harry, to be honest I don't believe owe actually need another Major, esp as Australia is so far away for the rest of the world, it will make it very difficult for people tomcat the full set, but saying that, if you live in Aus like myself, every major is a mammoth journey and very expensive. I think Abbott marathon major execs must've just watched this video and implemented all of my recommendations lol, where do Is end the bill?! Another 100m of elevation would've been brutal! Date definitely needs to change to avoid clashing with other majors and to avoid heat issues like 2023.
@@ultradiabetic CHANGE THE DATE!!!!!!!!!
Hi Nathan. Great video. I’m doing Noosa 50k ultra in 3 weeks and I’m interested in your thoughts on shoes. I have Hoka Speedgoat trail shoes but I’m loving my long runs in my ASICS road shoes. Could I use road shoes as it doesn’t look technical?
Hi Matt, congrats on closing to do this race. I have a pair of speedgoats which I wore on this race I believe and def would not recommend a road shoe, especially with some of the downhills sections and wood sections early on. Also the grass hill at half way would be too slippery for road shoes and the trail up to the 38km checkpoint and then near the finish would def warrant a trail shoe. Hope that helps. Also fill up on plenty of water at the 38k checkpoint and food as at 45k there was not much other than water.
TID fellow Queenslander here and I have my first ultramarathon in Noosa next month! I have trawled the internet looking for videos on people who have TID and do ultramarathons, was so excited to come across your channel and see we're in the same part of the world too. Thank you so much for putting yourself out there, Nathan. It's great to see some representation and see others absolutely smash it in the sporting world! Keen to look at the rest of your vids :) Ashlea
Thanks Ashley, I also have my insta account you can follow as well. What distance are you doing at Noosa?
@@ultradiabetic thanks Nathan, started following you the other day! I have a similar handle to my TH-cam name on Insta. I’m doing the 50K! I’ll do my damn best and my only goal is to finish within the time frame, and to manage my diabetes while doing it!
Great. Are you on a pump or MDI? @@Rockabillygoat999
@@ultradiabetic I’m on the Tandem T-Slim pump! I’ve been fine-tuning my rates with longer runs to gauge how it will be on the day. I really don’t know how it’s going to go until I try, the longest training run I’ve done is 25km, my personal method of training has been to work my way to up around the race distance for overall kms run during the week with some strength training twice a week :)
@@Rockabillygoat999 OK, the general rule of thumb when exercising is to half the basal amount and I think for an hoiur before hand as well
I don't think Sydney will get a flat marathon. The city is hilly so no avoiding it. I think Sydney simply needs to embrace the elevation and sell it as a challenging marathon like Boston. But if they could get rid of the switchbacks and find a route which loops from the Harbour Bridge to the Opera House, I believe it would be a lot more enjoyable even with the elevation. I really hated the amount of time spent in Centennial Park and feel it ruins the run.
Yes agreed matt, the elevation for this marathon is something to be lived with
Bit of a different view to london 😮 Good luck with the training.
Thanks mate, hopefully the hot weather and humidity training is helpful.
great place to run!
Awesome vid, these events are so fun there should be more of them
Absolutely bang on correct
They passed the first test 😎😎😎
Well done 👍
Thanks mate
That’s bloody awesome 😊
Thanks Ish.
The Sydney marathon course has some amazing views, but everything you mentioned is absolutely correct, especially the hills, the twists and the heat. The Gold Coast Marathon is far better, although even in July, the GC can be warm and humid. The Melbourne Marathon is probably much better than Sydney, although it can be a little warm as well, and then there is the HM intermingling with the marathon. One error you made is the Gold Coast HM is on the Saturday but the 10km is on the Sunday, not Saturday as you suggested. I ran the GC HM last year and my friend ran the 10km, he held my rain coat and I went and cheered him on, as he was coming back from open heart surgery. Anyway, thanks for the video.
Thank you, yes sorry GC 10k is on the Sunday.Glad you enjoyed the half.
Thanks for this Nathan. I am trying to decide on whether to go to Sydney for the Age Groups World Championship in 2024, and while I would love to do the race, and would love to visit Australia, so far I see zero evidence that any of the troubling issues you bring up are being addressed for 2024 - the date is the same, the timing is the same, the half marathon is still on the same date (and starts earlier in the day - what is the point of that?), and the course hardly seems to be any different. It is a long and expensive trip from the east coast of the US, and I don't want to do it only to be aggravated by a lot of avoidable issues!
Totally understand Anthony. I’m not sure how it will get Major status with the issues I brought up and which everyone seems to highlight. There seems to be no structural recommendations made by Abbot. It just seems they want to accept Sydney just to take their money without making sure the marathon is as high a level as the other majors. Most of the world will find late September too hot and humid to run a marathon that starts at 7am. The whole marathon in my opinion needs revamping especially the start, the route and date. 🤞🏼
I hope you decided to come. They scrapped the Half and will start earlier, from a bigger park. Plus way fewer km in Centennial. I'm sad about losing the Darling Harbour part. But it makes sense for racing.
Keep saying it but that camera is amazing 😅
Hell yeah mate! Congrats
Thanks Ricky
Congratulations 🥳
Thanks mate
Yes mate! How long you gonna be over for?
Not sure yet, just working all that out
