In households and families that speak other languages, yes, it is quite common to switch back and forth between languages in casual conversation (See also: “Chinglish”, “Spanglish”)

The mixing Chinese & English is fairly typical of bilingual families. It's called "code-switching" when you switch languages within a sentence. Sometimes the best words to express something is in English, other times it's Mandarin or Cantonese, so if everyone can understand those, why not choose the words that say it best (doesn't matter which languages)? The simple fact they did this tells us a lot about the family background. Evelyn speaks Cantonese with her Father Gong Gong, so that is her birth dialect. But she & Waymond speak Mandarin Chinese together which means Waymond came from a different background, a possible reason why Gong Gong does not like him. Joy is obviously Americanised, mostly speaking English, and only speaks a small amount of Mandarin, and that poorly. So you've got different sorts of culture clashes all going on within one family.

I just watched this over the weekend for the 1st time ever, only knowing the VERY basic premise & nothing else. I just came across your video when doing a TH-cam search looking for things I may have missed in the movie even after I watched it a 2nd time. Your reactions are the same I had watching the 1st time. Lol. Such a bizarre movie but I loved it.

I really love both the cliff scene and that final sequence as well! The music in both scenes is phenomenal!
