Ever since I first saw a Guzheng (In Ray Man music, Covent Garden Circa 1994) I fell in love with the sound & I always wanted to own one, but they were quite expensive & also not very practical due to their massive size.
Skip forward 10 years or so - upon visiting a friend in Brixton I saw a GuZheng in the corner of the room! “Wow! Is that yours?” - Apparently It had been given to my friend by someone in lieu of some money owed & was just sitting there, mostly unplayed. - Well… After a tiny bit of bargaining & friendly haggling, The GuZheng was mine! - I happily took it home & it has since made its way into several Kaya Project & Hibernation songs, including the most recent of which ‘This Too Shall Pass’ which shall be included in this weeks mini-album ‘Transforming Sorrow’. Such a beautiful, meditative instrument to play & one of my most favourite musical sounds in the world.
The Tongue Drum played in the song is the best thing I ever brought back from a festival - I picked this up during my time in Chillout Planet festival, Russia back in 2017. It has been used on many Kaya Project songs since & is always a joy to play.

After struggling for years trying to produce electronic music with technology that required an ‘ology to work it … plus a lifetime’s dedication gawping at a screen throughout the night … I eventually caught up with Seb Taylor at a small Welsh Festival years ago and asked him in a quiet moment how long it took him to make the (utterly brilliant) track Dr Sembei from the Third State album … his reply was very depressing to us mere mortals “ 2 days … possibly 3 if I’m honest … to get the final mix right” … I should have gone home and sold all my gear the next day …. I didn’t … and still have it …. and still sweat and struggle to create even one decent album worth of material. Some people have a God-given talent for pushing this gear into new territories … Seb stands out as one of the true ‘greats’ in electronic music … up there with Boris Blank of Yello, imho.
Hey thanks for such kind words!! - Actually it probably comes down to yourself being more of a perfectionist than myself. I released plenty of stuff back in that era that was probably not properly finished - the limitations of the equipment also helped! ie - once your sampler memory was full (all 2Mb of it, i kid you not) you had no choice but to say - OK! thats that, & move onto the next song. - today's endless track count & 'option paralysis' with infinte effect choices & production tools etc, make it MUCH MUCH harder to actually finish stuff. ANyway - I'm glad u didn't sell your gear. Music is importnt for your soul. Cheers!! xxxxx Seb
