i have left some comments on your vids coz i just recetly stumbled upon your channel and i watch your vids one by one from time to time, and some have some wholesome short interactions (i hope you make a discord channel) im now working on my capstone and getting ready for final defense. your vids about concept apps really saved my ass. i hope you post more tips!
I love your vids! Im a architecture student, i hope you post more concept app tips since it's also available on tablet.
Thanks! I surely hope to post more. Just have to find the time between clients and dad duty! Good luck in Arch school and don’t drink too many energy drinks! Thanks for watching!
@@landshaperstudio wow, is it really common that we all drink energy drinks? 😂 Thank you! Looking forward for more vids!
@@Dobangz At Mississippi State, we had a drink vending machine in the studio. They would refill it and by day 2 all the monsters were gone...But those late nights wrapping up a project and printing at 7:45 am for an 8am presentation were some of the best times!
New follower! Im a tablet user (cant afford ipad) your concept app tips are so helpful coz it's the only app that i can use in school!
Concepts app is definitely ahead of the game. Another great one for tablet is autodesk Sketchbook pro if you prefer a pixel painter. What tablet are you working with?
@@landshaperstudio i wanted an app like morpholio trace that is architecture friendly and i think concepts is the closest one. Im using xiaomi pad 6 pro, im broke 😂
does it also have dimension tool like in autocad?
Yes. There is a scale function. Can be found under workspace or by tapping the grid option and editing you paper size and scale. Then your measure option will read out realtime measurements. Hope this helps!
Please drop the terrible background music. Soooo distracting
But I really like that song! I agree though I could stand to improve on the ducking/production as a whole. Just gotta find the time. If the music is that bothersome though you can mute and use cc. Thanks for watching!
Clickbait. No Sketchup
Linework was done in SketchUp. Sorry if that seemed a bit misleading. This method just takes a 2d export from SketchUp using the black pen style (so it looks hand drawn) and finished out in concepts app. Not sure how far you made it in the video but I believe that is mentioned. Sorry if you feel your time was wasted. I hate clickbait as well!
Is the marker brush built in or a paid extra? Thanks!
I want to say it’s in the free brushes, but I could be wrong. I paid for pro right off the bat to try it all out and was so happy with it I never turned back. I do believe it is part of the basic brushes
What tablet are you using? What one do you recommend?
I’m using an iPad, which is what I recommended. But depending on your work flow and budget, your needs may be different. iOS as of now has the stronger app market for architects though. Concepts app is doing a lot to close that gap for drawing. But even their iOS version has more than its android version.
@@landshaperstudio getting caught in the "research" rabbit hole. Which specific iPad model are you using? Also, would love to chat about your workflow. I run a Landscape Design/Build company and am trying to switch from the pen and graph paper to more digital. Appreciate the help in advance.
So I am using the iPad Pro 12.9 (4th Gen) with 128gb storage. Runs great. Super smooth and never has an issue. I'm generally pretty good about layer management so I'm not the type to bog a drawing down with 40+ random layers. All that being said, a friend of mine is using the newer ipad 10th gen (not pro) and although it's slightly smaller and is only 64 gb, it's runs great. And there is a considerable price gap there. As for workflow...it's everchanging. Mainly because my clients are always changing their approach. I'm always up for talking shop. You can reach out through the contact info on my website. I do provide consultation as a service, but as long as it's just general conversation and not getting it's step by step/demonstration, we can chalk it up as a friendly industry chat.
@@landshaperstudio thanks man! I'll checkout your website
What scale are you drawing in?
I typically draw in 1/8”=1’-0” but often deviate depending on the size of the project and the sheet size my client wants to use.
Great video! Quick question-can you set up a template with multiple preset layers in Concepts, like ‘Image,’ ‘Base Plan,’ ‘Softscape,’ and ‘Hardscape’? I know you can have preset pages, but I’m curious if layers can be pre-configured too. Thanks!
Not so much a “template” but you can create somewhat of a master file/folder that you just duplicate and rename at the start of each drawing.
Hi there, what ipad, ipen and software are you using in the video?
iPad Pro 2019, Apple Pencil 2, Concepts App
Marvellous😘
Thanks 🤗
Can you edit an object in your object library and have all the copies / instances of that object also update?
No. They are just groups and do not act as a component or block would in SketchUp of AutoCad
meaning what? end of the channel?
No! :) Just a quick thank you to everyone that has come along for the ride and hoping we and this channel can all benefit from each other and grow together!
Nice job! I just got a Tab S9 tablet for this tipe of work as a complement for my desktop pc. I have a few questions and hope you can help me with them. 1.- Is Concepts THE app for this tipe of work for an Android tablet? (i don't like it to have subscription and no just one play) 2.- Paing the pro subscription will give me access to the different brushes? or i have to buy them separately? (like floor and walls textures) 3.- which are the benefits of paying the subscription just entering in the tablet/ipad side of youtube and your channel is just what i was looking foor, thanks
So, as with any app in this industry, it's about preference and your individual workflow. What type of drawings are you doing, what are you hoping to export, and what form do your deliverables usually take? These are the main questions I ask when consulting 1 on 1 for moving to tablet drafting/drawing. Unfortunately, as you probably know, availability to quality apps for android aren't as robust as iOS. With that being said, the few that I've used on my SurfacePro on the app side would be Concepts App, Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, and Clip Studio. I use concepts app more, because I like the vector workflow vs the raster workflow of sketchbook pro or clip studio. However, it's not without it's limitations. In Sketchbook and Clip you can operate those almost like Photoshop. Where as with concepts app you have to be creative with layering to get some of the same results. As for subscriptions... With concepts app, the subscription gives you access to all brushes and is well worth it. I can't remember entirely but i believe its the same with Sketchbook. Clip studio I'm unsure of. But with any of these, to get the most out of it, paying is going to be the way to go. These are pretty minimal prices compared to other software we have to pay for monthly so it's well worth is. Hope this helps!
What brush did you use to draw shadows? I can't find a brush with that texture
I used the brush pen for this one, although I normally use marker. Was just trying something new on this one.
How to save settings as a template instead of duplicate?
For me, the program always just opens a new doc with the settings I had set for the last one. So if that's pretty consistent, you'd see the same thing each time.
HI Jerry. My uphill grind on going digital currently is that less-featured version of Concepts that they offer for Android/Windows compared to the full features provided to iOS. I'm not really a Mac person, or are our offices. It's a bit frustrating that some sort of gatekeeping is happening here. So I am at a crossroads: (1) switch to iOS; (2) look for another sketch app like Sketchable; (3) just stick it out with Photoshop and its complexity. If you have a sway on the Concepts developing team, please urge them to aid the demographic working on Windows/Android.
Sorry for the delayed reply here. Not sure if you saw or not, but it appears your prayers have been answered! ha As for apple products in our field...I 100% agree. The only apple products I work with are my iPhone and iPad. Everything else (3d, Cad, Graphic Design) is all done on pc. Most of the rendering programs aren't even available on Mac and to build a mac strong enough to run them would take the cost of a whole office worth of pc's. Anyway.. I've worked with several companies that have all had a unique work flow, but we always came back to Concepts simply because the vector based workflow allowed for so much flexibility. Especially in design-centric offices that were heavy on collaboration. Pixel painters like procreate and photoshop definitely have the upper hand on the high-end watercolor style and photo-bashing, but outside of those specific uses, I stick with Concepts App.
Nice video, but the text of the steps is unfortunately hidden by the video description overlay from TH-cam. Also, which brush did you use at the end for the highlights? Looked like a thick black marker
Sorry for that! Are you watching on mobile? When I made this first one, I wasn't really planning on uploading to YT so it was formatted with the instagram dimensions in mind. If you look under the 2 minute tuts playlist, there's an updated version of this that should work better for you! The brush for the shadows at the end is the brush pen and I upped the pressure sensitivity on it a bit. Hope this helps!
Hi!! Where did you create the object that you import into the blank canvas at the beginning? I have checked your playlist and I don't see the tutorial that you mention
Sorry for that. Check out our 2 Minute Tut Playlist and there is a quick "Objects" tutorial under there!
Great, I learned more Concepts tricks, thank to you. Unfortunately, with the Windows/Android version, you still cannot edit your brush angle and gradient, Such a bummer that Concepts for Windows is not a full feature app.
Staying hopeful that as we see them move to full cross platform integration this will be solved in the process!
Where can I find trees and shrubs?
Hi, these are some "objects" I've made on my own. If you look at our 2 Minute Tuts you'll see a quick how-to on how I make them!
great tip!
How you go from inventory to base map digitally? Are you using google earth and field verifying? Drones? Up to autocad base then dropping into concept ?
Yes to all the above actually! It varies as we are an outsourcing option for our clients so we use whatever they give us. Sometimes that’s on-site measurents we then draw out, sometimes it’s a drone or Polycam scan, or a traditional survey. Occasionally we have to just use google earth but the perspective skew makes it pretty unreliable.
Thank you! I really look forward to your videos. 😃
Thanks for watching!
what version of the application are you using?
@brspart I’m am using the iOS version on a 2019 iPad Pro. I know some items, like custom objects, are not yet available on android/pc. But I’d keep an eye on their roadmap as this is one thing they are working hard on!
@@landshaperstudio It's not very fair. Why should we pay for an application that treats its users differently. Why is iOS always ahead of Android in this type of applications?
@mptprojetos6966 this is one of the biggest reasons I switched to iPad. It’s unfortunate because android tablets and pc setups have grown leaps and bounds! My only guess is either they focus on iOS first for a larger market or the platform is easier and cheaper to build on. Hopefully this changes in the future.
HE’S BACK!! Hope all has been well for you. Just in time for spring, love the videos and tutorials my man. Helps with motivation and inspiration. Keep up the work!! Love from SC
Thanks for the love! We welcomed a little one in September so finally getting back into creating some content. Thanks for sticking around!
Great job. How long did that take in real time?
Thank you! A little under 2 hours for this concept and a second option.
Admire the loose style and how clean you’re able to keep it.. keep up the amazing designs, looking forward to more content. Designing on a tablet has been a game changer for me, after switching from paper… especially being left handed as well. Concepts has come a long way, looking forward to their future updates as well as your future projects!!
Thanks for the love! And absolutely! Most left handed use that headlock style grip which always left one side of my hand smearing pencil or fresh marker everywhere! lol. Digital has been a game changer. Especially when I’m indecisive and want to make changes halfway through final labeling haha!
Cheers, happy Saturday! iPad and coffee ☕️ in hand
Not a bad way to spend the morning!
are you going to add more videos after this?
I definitely hope to!
How do you add your hidden lines around the sketch? Just one block at a time, or did you program a tool to do it?
Hey would love to help out, but not understanding what you meant by "Hidden Lines". Can you elaborate a bit more?
@@landshaperstudio - the dashed lines you have around your work. They look like a mix between hidden and center Line marks used in drafting
@@gB-gm7vy ah. Sorry. Should have picked up the CAD reference. So unlike Morpholio, Concpets App doesn't have these as linetypes nor is there an efficient way really to make it a brush like you can in procreate. So for now, I draw the line and then double back with the eraser tool. I believe that different line types may be on their roadmap though.
Hi! may I know what are the brushes do you use in this video? I cannot find that type of thin brush that you used, thank you
Hi! Pretty much all of the linework is produced with the “Pen” brush. I really like the hit-go-hit style the brush gives. Also the faster you go, the thinner the stroke will appear within certain parameters so you can get a wide range of use without having to constantly switch brushes.
What's the use case for using morpholio trace vs the concepts app for landscape/garden design? Thanks in advance. Appreciate your content!
Hi Nymode! For me it’s less about what you’re drawing and more about your style and working deadlines. The main difference between these two apps is Morpholio is a pixel painter and Concepts is vector based. Since we work for other designers we are constantly up for critiques and tight deadlines, so vector based selections and changes are much quicker and easier and although we lose some of the abilities you get with pixel based editing, it’s much faster for us. At the end of the day, both are really good apps that you can utilize for pretty much any application you put the time into.
Shared your video on Landscape Architecture TV. Thanks.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
can these drawings be opened on AutoCAD cause last time I opened it on their bunch of wiggly lines were coming up instead of an actual drawing
Yes. Couple things to keep in mind though: When you draw in concepts app, you are drawing from point to point with a line of information in between to dictate what that stroke looks like. That's why we can change a pen stroke to a marker stroke in concepts. It's all just a series a points with info between each point telling the program what tool we use and what that should look like. However, when you export the .dwg to a program like Autocad, autocad is only reading the lines. So if you used a watercolor brush for instance, CAD doesn't detect that information. Instead, it only sees a line between two points. In autocad, you can take that line and change the line type and style, but the perameters you set within concepts app won't carry over. Make sense?
Hi, great tips. I'm a garden designer and use Sketchup Pro and Concepts in combination and I never knew you could do this! Question... do you have to use a particular pen in Concepts for this to work. So does it have to be the basic fixed-width pen or can you use the fountain pen with a bit more character for example Thanks
Hey Jo! It’s whatever fits your style! I typically use the “pen black” style in SketchUp with detail turned all the way up, or I used “Construction Style” with extensions set to 4. Once in concepts I use the “Pen” tool. Gives a little thickness at the ends to emphasis the start and stop which matches my traditional style.
@@landshaperstudio thanks! I really like using the sketchy pen styles in sketchup but have yet to find a way of exporting just this linework with transparent faces so that I can have the sketchy linework as the top layer in a concepts render. I can export a PDF 2D image from sketchup so that the 'faces' are 'transparent' but I lose the sketchy style. Do you know if that is even possible?!
@@johobbsgardendesign2915 Yep! So question, are you exporting screenshots directly from SU or are you sending to Layout to scale and add to paper size? My typical workflow doing what you're talking about is Sketchup>Layout>Concepts. If you're doing it this way, then all you need to do is go into the selected style, edit > Face Settings. Under style in the face settings select wire frame. I was able to set my linework on top exporting both PDF and PNG this way. Hope this helps!
@@landshaperstudio I'm exporting straight out of SU as a png and then into concepts. Thanks for the tip.. but in a 3D view you see all the back edges which is annoying? Can they be turned off? I appreciate you taking the time!
@@johobbsgardendesign2915 I I see. So in a 2d Plan view style is what I was referring to. If you wanted to do 3d, you can send the view to layout and then set the model to vector then explode the model. This will leave only the visible linework. You could then export that. Are you using sketchup on a computer or Ipad?
Sick style man. I’ve been doing something similar to your workflow but in Autodesk Sketchbook. It’s raster and not vector graphics so I’m intrigued by Concepts 🙏🏼
Thanks! I actually started out on Sketchbook when I was using my surface pro. I loved the setup, but switched to ipad just for ease of use while drawing and collabing with clients. Didn't have to wait for my windows system to boot up :) and those wonderful 30 min. sporadic updates! haha. The switch to vector was also huge. While it does have some limitations, it's just been much more fluid and fast for turnarounds and popping in and out of difference scales. We only work for other designers and its usually on a tight deadline so the ability to easily isolate, select and switch scales has been huge for our workflow. Thanks for the love!
This is wonderful! I use concepts app myself all the time, but I am nowhere near as good as you. Your work style is amazing.
Thanks! We all have different styles and I'm sure you're is unique and great on its own! Would love to see it. I know for myself, it took me years to build up my confidence on pen and paper. What I do in the app is just transfer that same method over.
Starting my journey into the world of designing without paper!
Just give yourself some grace when starting out and know that it's ok to suck for a bit. I remember going from traditional media to digital felt like I was going back to where my trees looked like broccoli. :) But give it time and the results will come. There are a few more vids on our channel to help you along. Hope you find them helpful and there is more on the way!
Awesome work! This a dying art from within landscape architecture a whole. If more students and architects resorted to hand drawn conceptual work like this we would be moving toward a more creative and expressive future. Having been in the profession for 30 years there's a stronger connection to creativity when you co ordinate thought with hand-eye co ordination of hand sketching rather than the cut copy paste and concept development in a CAD platform. I've seen creativity levels drop significantly over the years as hand sketching fades into the background.
Luckily almost all of my professors pursued some sort of traditional art on the side and so were big on traditional methods and being able to express our ideas quickly and effectively. LA, from what I see, has grown into something much more broad than it was in the past. For better or worst, is everyone's personal opinion, but the industry has grown to wear multiple hats. And many of those hats aren't very "design" oriented in the way of art but more purely function. As LA's grab more at civil engineering type projects and planning, I see alot more info-based / use-model design happening in the commercial spaces and the only ones that seem to be truly artful are the big competition based firms. I know thats painting with a broad and probably unfair brush, but that's just what I've seen. Seems less about hey, how can we collaborate with other professions and make what they need into an artful marriage of form and function...and more about: Grading? Planning? Survey? Structural? Yeh we can do that too. Lol. I think what we are seeing more is a shift in the profession as a whole and less about the graphics. Heck, the graphics alone now are pretty much it's own profession. Atleast that's what my company does :)
Beautiful drawing! Is this drawing enough info for the contractor or do they still need a Cad file as well?
Thanks! And it depends. Some design/build firms that we’ve drawn for just need a simple sketch since they have a good idea of what they want to do whereas some need detailed drafting. However, usually it’s not the contractors that dictate the final deliverables. It’s the city (permitting) and the homeowner. This was a concept sketch (1of2) that was presented to this client. Then 3d, and lastly a submital set for project permitting.
@@landshaperstudio Thanks for that info!
Well done mate!! What was your total time on that plan? I need to fly out to your studio and learn from the master. Always a good time watching you work! Keep up the great work!
Thanks! So previous to this we presented two black and white concepts. This was the revised so a decent amount of linework was already there. But time between all three concepts (2 original, 1 revised) was about 5-6 hours. With about 4 of that being actual drawing time.
❤️❤️❤️
i love this video. thanks.
Thanks so much. Trying to make more time to create more content :)
you deserve more suscribers, brother!, thanks
I appreciate that!
Wow! Very nice. I love your work. How do you find using concepts app for your drawings?
I love it. It's fairly easy to learn, simple scaling, and I really like the fact that it is vector based. No loss of clarity at any scale.
Great illustrative design and precision with the snap feature. You still kept it loose and expressive with your style! From your experience with the Concepts app and Morpholio app, which do you over all prefer and why?
For me I personally gravitate toward concepts app. Mainly due to clarity and the general workflow of vector vs pixel based. Morpholio feels more traditional, and has some really cool features though! But I just hate having to create so many layers when working in and out on a larger piece since morpholio uses the same amount of pixels for each layer no matter the size.
As an Architect, I find this video orgasmic lol.
Not sure how to properly react to that, but must be doing something right! So I'll take it! Thanks!
Paperlike was a huge improvement for me. Tried the rubber Pen Tips but they would always fall off while drawing or get lost in transport.
I wouldn’t mind giving paperlike a go. However, I’m so used to glass now is probably not enjoy it as much!
Nice work. I've seen the options for dxf export but haven't had a need for it yet. Appreciate the content!
Thanks! Vector based opens a ton of options. Not to discredit the use of Morpholio or Procreate. But the infinite canvas and no pixelation are great to be able to change size and scale on a whim. Especially in our line of work. Thank you for watching! Glad you are finding it useful!
