[Quake] Dwell - D2END: Apeirohedron (Blind Playthrough, Nightmare difficulty)
This whole fight feels rough and undertested.
There are 4 main issues I had with this map.
1. Bullets spawning inside of player. There's no clear indication if the circle of bullets is going to spawn and it . That forces player to move away from huge space near the center of the arena to sides.
2. On sides of the arena are only 8 small health packs and they are always on the way and do not respawn. So it gets easy to pick up one while fighting, even if at 49 hp.
3. Explosive indicators. I don't know how long it took me to figure out there actually were an indicators. Yeah, those small circles on a ground in a fight with a flying boss are really helpful. Fun fact, Doom 2016 had huge indicators for cyberdemon attacks, and that boss didn't even fly.
4. Foreknowledge required for later half of the map, specifically for fiends and kamikaze. Kamikaze seems to spawn in a counter-clockwise pattern and fighting them seems rather easy and fair but only with that knowledge.

Had to pause and do other stuff at around 1:14:52. Shortly after started using quicksaves. One of the biggest maps for quake I've played, very impressive work. Sadly, playing it blind isn't all that fun. Might come back to it later, those 60 secrets are kinda interesting to look for. Bonus map that unlocks after beating episode 1. I liked the extensive usage of powerups. Also features a new weapon which I absolutely love, finally a weapon to counter shamblers and shalraths. That battle near the end was intense
Yeah, it's certainly rough and undertested as hell. It was the end of development, I wasn't as good at QuakeC as I am now so I wasn't able to really fix up the boss the way I wanted, and overall I tuned things way above the typical player's skill level. It's getting overhauled come E3/4 though ;)

This was my favorite map of the episode. It felt so atmospheric and otherwordly but also familiar. Loved it.

That's an amazing use of colour and shadow.
Have to hand it to the creator - artistically and thematically spot on and creative use of the enemy to make for more engaging combat than you'd normally get with this era of AI.

You can bind the rotary shotgun and the double-barreled shotgun separately if you prefer. It's impulse 23 for the double and impulse 33 for the rotary.

what's the maximum number of enemies on screen in quake 1?
Not sure if there's any. But this mod requires modern source ports, which increase limits drastically, so even if there are any, it won't show while playing this mod.
There is no simple max number - the original game engine supports IIRC about 600 objects total and 256 objects in the current rendered scene - which includes monsters, items, effects like explosions, etc. etc. the modded versions lift that into the 1000s or even 10s of thousands. It is also possible to hit other limits like the maximum polygons the engine will render in a scene, model indexes, etc. which usually just straight up crash the game.

There are times long levels overstay their welcome. This one did not do that. It kept ramping up, slowly, and at the end, it just got hectic. Not bad
