This channel was originally set up in March 2020, as churches had to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. Most people would not be able to hear the sound of a church organ, so I thought it might be a good idea to bring those sounds into their homes.
These well-known hymns, along with pieces of organ and choral music, were mostly recorded on the wonderful 4 manual 1912 Harrison & Harrison pipe organ in St Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol where I was Director of Music & Organist from August 2003-April 2023. I am now a freelance Organist, Choral Director and Composer working in the Bristol area.

‘We stand to mourn a Sovereign’ (text by Dominic Grant) sung by St Mary Redcliffe Choir, Bristol.
Recorded on Sunday 11 September, 2022 by the book of condolence as a mark of respect and thanksgiving for the life of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022).

From 16:16 one could almost believe onesself to be at Wanamakers! Sadly, despite Mark Venning's comment, I think that Cor Anglais very mediocre and certainly no equal for those either of Father Willis or of E. M. Skinner...
Around 15 minutes out, there is a distant sound of tower bells striking the hour.... :)
Fascinating many thanks
32' Trombone ❤
So beautiful and so moving, i heard this song the first time today in a church service, this is really devine
Why weren't we allowed to hear the other 32' reed?
The 32ft Double Ophicleide is there towards the end but not demonstrated separately. The compressed sound on TH-cam doesn’t reveal its full grandeur, as heard in the beginning. I hope you enjoyed the rest of the presentation.
@@andrewkirk3086 would it be possible to re-do this demo in better audio quality specifically for TH-cam?
I must come over from Cardiff and play this wonderful instrument one day. Lovely to hear these individual H+H stops.
It’s like a dream!
so poor unity
Absolutely excellent presentation of a truly remarkable organ.
We didn't get to hear the other 32' reed, even after it was mentioned. In fact, the Pedal division was skipped entirely. We didn't hear the individual chorus reeds on the Great or Swell divisions. A mediocre presentation at best.
Absolutely love this, just brilliant 💕
Can we have the lyrics please.
It’s there in the comments!
Thanks so much, I think this is the only version on TH-cam and choristers up and down the country will greatly benefit from this. Thanks again ❤
Hi Andrew, I have a love for choral music and would love to enjoy a performance at St mary redcliffe at some point, I live close by. Are there any set times for performances? Many thanks. Sam.
Fantastic. Thankyou very much for this.
A hymn upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II: We stand to mourn a sovereign, a nation's guide and friend, who through long years of tumult was faithful to the end. We offer our thanksgiving for all that she instilled: her constancy of service, her lifetime's vow fulfilled. Now from our world departed - though never from our hearts - receive her in the peace, Lord, your love alone imparts. And as we mark a passing of sceptre, orb, and throne, we'll find in her compassion a pattern for our own: that all who stand in mourning, or languish now in fear, may know again your promise to wipe away each tear. With her we'll join in witness, Christ's mercies our refrain: great Sovereign of the nations, eternal is your reign! © Dominic Grant, 9 September 2022. Tune: THAXTED (“I vow to thee, my country”) revdsgrant.wordpress.com/2022/09/09/upon-the-death-of-queen-elizabeth-ii-a-hymn/
Thank you for posting this recording.
Good to hear Charles Paterson's music being sung here - it's a lovely setting of the Advent Responsory.
A beautiful tune played by an amazing organist. This is NOT a criticism, merely a note of my personal preference which is that I prefer the quieter registers as I feel it suits the beauty of the tune better. I do however realise that such talented musicians register verses to suit the text. The Harrison and Harrison of St Mary Redcliffe boasts a wealth of beautiful registers and can easily imitate the mouse, or the lion! An organ to be very envious of, and one which I would love to play for 5 mins! Thank you Andrew for sharing your talent!
Were it not for the enthusiastic promotion and recordings of Carlo Curley (RIP) for and at this organ, I would not have heard of it. Thank you for this enlightening video.
Very good - a fantastic instrument so there is HUGE scope in developing this approach for folk to watch and listen on You Tube
It would be a dream for me to one day play this instrument. We hope to come to Bristol once in my life.
Beautiful Harrison organ. I have a cd recorded on this instrument by Carlo Curley, Organ Imperial. It was my first cd with which I met English organ music. I love Elgar, Parry, Whitlock ...
Great playing and video production. Thanks for posting, Andrew!
Wonderfully played on that very fine Harrison.
First recording I was part of!
Beautiful Miriam ... thank you.
A great arrangement.
Bravo. Great visuals too. Splendid effort. 2010? Was I in it? Can't remember the receding past!
Alas - you had ‘fled the nest’ (link to the Carol!) by 2010 - think you left us in 2008 - the tears are still drying. It was a peak year for the trebles - Dafydd, Harry, Stanley, Reuben, Barney, Charlie, Noa etc....
Been to countless recitals there over the years. Am puzzled as to why it is so seldom recorded.
Paul S there are 7 or 8 commercial recordings of the organ from the past 10 years!
@@andrewkirk3086 well thank you for letting me know that because I had no idea. It is one of my favourite organs in the world for many reasons, Bristol is my home city, I was lucky enough to sing in the choir there (once) many years ago and I page turned for a recitalist. Plus I heard Carlo Curley there in the 90's, which was interesting!
This organ is definitely one of the first organs on my "bucket list" to hear and hopefully play someday! Shame we really have nothing like this in the USA
What about all those fabulous Skinners, Kimballs etc?
I think you have, if you follow the excellent demonstrations and concerts of Balint Karosi. And remember that D Skinner came from the Harrison works in the UK.
@@peteacher52 you mean E. M. Skinner? Or G. Donald Harrison of Aeolian-Skinner? If the latter, he was nothing to do with the Durham Harrisons. He was a Lewis/Willis III man.
Fascinating tonal tour. I well remember playing the Redcliffe Organ whilst on holiday in Bristol as my son, Colin, sang in the Choir there for some years before he moved to Birmingham. Best Wishes to Andrew Kirk. We were supposed to hear your Recital in St. Mary, Nantwich, whilst on holiday in August, but that has been cancelled for this year as has our holiday.
What settings is Colin using for this hymn?
You see how famous you are going to be Andrew!

Thank You Very Much Andrew, really enjoyed the tour of the organ at St Mary Redcliffe - this is on my bucket list to come and visit sometime! :-)
Thank you for posting this excellent sonic organ tour. I had the great pleasure of performing a full recital on this wonderful instrument 28 April 1992, and to this day consider it among the handful of greatest organs I have ever played.
And thank you, Master Christiansen, if you be he who performed at the Tabernacle for so long with such artistry.
:))
Great to hear this again.
Look forward to you uploading more hymns. You are a shining light in these dark days of covid19. Thank you so much.
