Shame the old studio is gone. I used to go to Teddington Secondary modern, known colloquially as Broom Road School, mid 60's to early 70's. Often used to see Sue Stranks filming some Magpie footage out on the road. Later in life I worked for quite a few of the producers and directors that worked there. Benny Hill lived fairly close and used to see him out and about at times too.
Wow! Does that happen a lot around there, or is this year an exception?
I gather it does happen frequently but this year is exceptional. We’ve had a week of pumping lorries and tanks working on the flooding further down our lane. The out of town shopping area has had huge pumping equipment working for the last two weeks. Dual carriage road at the shopping centre down to one lane each way while they do that. Also, the A29 Road out of here is closed off, meaning a diversion and traffic chaos. Hopefully, we’ll get a dry frosty period to allow it all to drain away.
Wow! Does that happen a lot around there or was this year an exception?
Just found out, back in 2010 went to see the new version of Reggie Perrin being made there, such a treat to go there. Real historic place, Tommy Cooper, Morecambe and Wise to name but a few. Very sad.
Fab! 👌 x
So lovely to see it all again.
Gorgeous Ged. Nice piano too!
Now can we see Teddington Lock , rather than the river either side of it please?
I remember watching my favourite childhood channel when it was presented at that studio. Nostalgia
That is a wonderful video and I'll link to it in a walk I writing.
Thanks Sean.
Very good, hypnotic....
Shere was the home of John Hopgood, an R.A.F. pilot who was killed with most of his crew on the 'Dambusters' raid in 1943. Hopgood would have been 100 in 2021.
I used to work at the studios , heartbreaking to see this 😢😢
My dad worked there years ago as the driver. Sid Frampton was a darling.
Flats for RUSSIANS & CHINESE not for locals
Omg they demolished the studios?.. I never knew that 😳😭
Alan jones Yes, such a shame. All apartment blocks now. 😿
Good shots of the foxes
I once went there to see a fake show, turned out to be This is your Life with Eamonn Andrews, can’t remember his guest, too long ago, it was Thames Television then, now nothing, not been back to Teddington in over 30 years.
This footage was NOT taken in the Flying Field. The drone operator is standing by Beverley Brook just across from Roehampton Gate car park, i.e. 600m from the Flying Field. Therefore this footage is in breach of Royal Parks regulations.
Oh my.....this is a shock. I don't live in London anymore but my late mother used to work at the BBC and then got head-hunted to work at Teddington, firstly for Associated British Corporation (ABC) and then when it became Thames Television. So many happy memories: Mum used to take me into work with her during school holidays but I was under 14 (or was the age limit 16?) so could only watch rehearsals and dress rehearsals, not allowed in to live audience shows! So sad that those shiny-floored corridors are no more that I pattered up and down on. The wonderful prop store. The "modern" (for then!) canteen, the dozens of offices, art departments, scene stores, rehearsal rooms and the large boat that was moored at the jetty and was used for occasional hospitality. The Anglers pub next door where actors and crew would enjoy a pint or three. It was a magical place. Meeting Eric & Ernie and Tommy Cooper (so tall!) and sitting in the cosy darkness of the studio galleries. Watching "Bless This House", run-throughs of "Opportunity Knocks" and "The Kenny Everett Show" and begging to be let in to see the "Magpie" set because everyone seemed so cool! Many years later I applied to do technical training as I wanted to be a sound engineer. The course never materialised because Thames' days were numbered. I went elsewhere but the memories of Teddington are strong and fondly remembered.
I would rather have heard the Benny Hill theme. This is far too irritating.
Flummoxed Marmoset Agreed, it is a bit irritating but Magpie was the program I remember best from the studios and the often filmed outside looking at the footbridge and the weir. The point of the film was to highlight the visual impact of the demolition site compared with the vibrancy of the Magpie program. There were many, many great shows recorded and broadcast from there with a host of famous names of which Benny Hill was one.
Thanks for this birds eye view . I now intend to explore the river by paddle board.
That should be fun. Hope you get good weather for it and GoPro your trip.
You must be a taxi driver!? You went the long way!
Nice music I will have to fly my drone over there! Or mayb some drone fishing!?
New apartment blocks nearly finished now.
I live just up the road , one of my favourite places in the world. it is so different throughout the different seasons.
Goed uitgezocht...Ik waan me reeds daar. ... L.
Where is The flying field (what is the nearest gate) and is there a sign that says drones and rc planes permitted here. I am going by foot
in through sheen gate right at roundabout field on left.
Well, I think it was worth destroying a huge part of Teddington's (and by extension, Great Britain's) history, so that some fucking Singaporeans can build some condos.
When you consider how much post-war popular culture came from here, it’s a tragedy. Euston Road went nearly 20 years ago, the former LWT studios on the South bank and what’s left of the old Rediffusion site at Wembley soon to follow. TVC is also a former shadow of itself. Television is the poor relation in British culture but its’ output goes much further and deeper than art and music in our consciousness and yet it is treated like dirt. Could anyone imagine the Albert Hall being pulled down because it was on prime development land?
Too scared to fly over the site or something? Give us a proper up-close look!
malthus101 The CAA rules prohibit flying over private land without gaining permission from the owner. Hence I tried to stay over the river. New apartment blocks are more than half built now. May be worth another flight before they are occupied to show before and after.
Ged Burnett ignore the CAA! You're supposed to be an English lion! How are the CAA gonna know you flew a tiny little drone?? Do it!!
malthus101 Careful now, they’ll have you for incitement 😂😂😂
Ha, sadly you're probably right! More policing done on TH-cam, Facebook and Twitter than on the streets. What has England become.....
Good thing I got to see the studios in 2004!
Oops! I said that already!
Flats being built there now. I must do another fly past when they’re finished.
I think this beach is called "Megano". Very good, indeed! There is one more, even more beautiful, it's called "Ensenachos".
Amazing scenes. Sunlight on the water, the sand, the tranquil water. The music...
Good thing I went to see it in 2004.
u know your ghost is friendly when it cleans your shit
AvailingCoder Trouble is it keeps getting all the s**t out again! 😩😩
I thought you were going under the bridge
Nice one Ged. Like the sound track too.
Great video Thank you for making it
Sad stuff
Hy great video, thumbs up, subscribe to my channel and I will subscribe to your channel
Opposite you and the wear is my daughters gym. Was there last week. Great pub on the end of the footbridge also. Great vid, keep em coming ( I'm in Northumberland )
Stunning, I grew up here - thank you :)
Looks like Les Ferdinand's been busy again. I used to do a bit of droning up there myself.
+Tommy Boyd Thanks for your comment Tommy. That's two Magpies - how many more can I collect?
Sensory overload for a Magpiean! Major memories of friends and the best of jobs.
Hi Mick, Thanks for your comment. I wasn't expecting that. You guys were always so much cooler than your rivals, Blue Peter! Shame about the studios- progress?!
Why does it say video not available when it is? Very annoying!
Great feedback, thanks!
Thank you for this video! I grew up in Formentera and lived there for 16 years. I am living in Germany since 2011. My dad and me wached the video together, it brought up a lot of memories and it was nice to see my home lsland again!
He is just too cute and a tad crazy bless him
Nice one Ged!
