How I became "Skinny Fat" and what I'm doing about it | 44 years old!
I somehow have found myself a bit "skinny fat" of late, a loss of muscle mass and increased belly fat. But how? but why? What can I do about it?
Over the last two years of my life I've been in best shape of my life, a decent physique competing in Hybrid fitness races and ultra marathons all year long. Last year I ran over 650 miles with 55,000 foot of ascent and went to the gym over 150 times and went to 20 different fitness events... but... a few weeks ago I looked in the mirror and realised I'd let my physique slip.
I'm not fat, but my muscle mass has reduced and noticeable my tummy has grown. But why?
To prevent me developing any long term health issues I am taking immediate action to prevent it going any further and reverse the effect's over the next 8 weeks.
In this video I talk about how I acknowledged the problem, the reasoning as to why its happened, the process of taking baseline measurements as well as a remediation plan. Warning.... this plan includes talking about fasting (dont panic...its O.K)
The silver lining to this little slip is I get to document my way out of it, demonstrate what's involved in returning to optimum fitness.
In 8 weeks time I will post a follow up to this video and discuss how this has gone, If you are interested in the results of this then give the channel a subscribe.

It's a proper battle as you get older to keep the tummy in. It takes a great effort to accomplish it and a continuous effort therefore after. Even if you as much as glance at a takeaway menu you can feel it. growing

Problem with IM is its a short term fix. HYROX training, strength etc needs fuelling. I know this as a 45-49 guy whos been there. Appreciate your honesty tho, its not sustainable if you train for performance. No doubt you will make the change, as hard as it is with small kids, work, events etc.. Stay real and Happy New Year!
@@mikecaseyoshea3594 oh yes I completely agree. I have no events currently booked so am making the most of the quiet period to get back to a normal bf% without it dragging on all year. A quick 8 week blitz and fueling will be right back to normal. like I said in the video after 4 weeks I'll start to relax it and phase back to normal nutrition

@martin-boyce do you still have the watch, if so yes please do release a up to date vid, as these version of the watch is so far in the past now with all the Instinct 2, 2X, Fenix and Epix releases it would be amazing to see how this pioneer has held up! (I don't mean in that in a negative sense at all, rather it proves its a real keeper)
Totally agree with your comments about the lack of instructions, even a QR code linking to a TH-cam video would be useful.
The way i look at it is the longer you do it for the longer you might be able to. If youre fit in your 40s you MIGHT be fit in your 60s, but if youre not in shape all the way to your 50s its probably already too late.
Being fit is the easy bit. I fear one day summit else will stop me...until then...I'll keep going until I cant

Just over 300 miles in this shoe, and finally watching a review about it. I will definitely start to incorporate a rotation of shoes like you said. I noticed I have worn a line into both arches of my feet due to wearing the same shoe for every run. Very informational, thank you.
Solid shoe, but definitely not an all the timer else that support will fight your arch to the death lol

Absolutely not, it cost too much 😂😂 it went for a soak in the bath, it’s as good as new now. I did the first run and the ski in the mask but then I had to carry it, I was going light headed and not finishing was my only concern. Deffo up for a team collab, the good thing about the new Deadpool is there’s lots of them 😅 power rangers used to look cool 🤪

Hi Martin - great video. What did you think of the rox zone length in general for London Excel?
We didn't slow down or stop once in the roxzone and it was still 90 seconds longer than Manchester
@ yeah I found it pretty long myself! My clock logged 9.7km total but always suspicious of accuracy!

I would also recommend ATHX games which isn’t mentioned, it’s getting very popular and held in venues similar to Hyrox throughout the uk

Another fantastic vid Martin. Thanks for including Deadly Dozen❗️💀❗️ I really do believe the Sport of Fitness Racing benefits from every different race. CrossFit and Hyrox (and many others) have laid the path, and we hope to contribute something of value to the industry. In my eyes, the more races there are, the more likely it is that one will appeal to someone new. That new person then joins the Fitness Racing space and may go on to Hyrox, CrossFit and other areas of competitive "Gym Sports" (as I like to call them).
No problem man, I'm keen to get out to a few of your events next year...going in for a year of hybrid...lots of videos to make 😊😊😊

It defo strikes me as not being the easy gig some folk might like to think it is! The hours of time and investment needed to make content worth clicking on should never be underestimated. I do always think (as someone who’s defo not a content creator and who could be well wide of the mark here) that there’s also a bit of luck needed along the way to catch a big break - the right video, at the right time, catching the right captive audience might just end up being a perfect storm. You see so many channels out there who can point to a very definite point where one video catapulted them forward in their journey more than any other. That moment isn’t always something you can plan for I wouldn’t think. Anyway - keep it up, you’re doing a grand job Martin!

Thanks for the summary, scafell and snowdon booked to finish off the trilogy. The time between the two is a concern. I had 2 weeks between nevis then coast to coast and like you said I could feel the fatigue through my body early on. Great events and well organised
Great review Martin, everything clearly covered. I just found out about this today at Hyrox training, as the coach gave us DDoz exercises to do instead. Really enjoyed it - tough workout. Looking at you doing the bear crawl made me think it would be easier if they pegged out a blue rope on the ground in each lane as a guide, or some tape perhaps? Hopefully these will gain momentum here in Northern Ireland.

I think sled push is the odd one out. It's far harder to do it slowly. I can barely even push it slow, I have to get it quick to keep momentum.
I am definitely coming to terms with do it fast, take a second to recover, go again rather than inch it across under tension
@martin-boyce it weighs 2 and a half times me. Its fast or nothing. My first training session it took me 3 attempts to move it. That was a shock.
Great video and collaboration with @rowalong I also did my first Hyrox in Manchester as Pro Doubles Men in just below 80 minutes. One of the hardest things I done and also felt runs felt long, my watch clocked 11km for indoor track. Will also work on running and looking forward to do it again in some months 💪
