The Segway PT i2 and X2 have a security function from the factory. Just press the button on the bottom right hand corner of your info key controller, and the Segway is armed. If it is moved, the Segway PT will sound an audible alarm, give the stick shake warning, and uses the wheels to make it difficult to move.

Hi, I would be very interested in your opinion in what happened when I hired a Segway machine in the UK; 1st October 2014 I turned up in plenty of time for my Forest Segway Experience in a local forest, when I arrived, I found I was the only one booked on the course. So once the safety briefing and training was over and having signed a damage waiver form. We set off, me an the instructor, we made an almost complete circuit of the course, which was a nature trail. There were no incidents or mishaps, we made various stops in between. The sensation I had when I stepped on the Segway was apprehension, as it felt like it either wanted to go forwards or backwards. Once I got used to it, and provided I was balanced, it then became stationary. When I was going up a gradient, it was difficult to push forward, as it felt like it was pushing back, so more force forward was needed. Towards the end of my run, the instructor suggested to take a narrower path back to the site; This is where my problems began! He put my machine back to training mode, we then proceeded to take this much narrower path and this led to the following; About halfway thro this section, as I followed my instructor thro a small opening with posts either side, the machine suddenly (and without warning) threw me off. I had no time to react as I was thrown off the machine and landed hard on the ground. I hit my left arm and hip an leg with a thump. I got up in shock with my arm stinging like crazy, the instructor (Will) gave me an ice pack and radioed ahead, shortly after a paramedic from the site arrived and ascertained nothing was broken, his colleague then bought me a coke. As I regained my composure I was then slowly led back to base. After filling in an signing an accident report, I made my way back home. Driving very carefully............................ Looking at the area I came off at, there was clear tire track from the right wheel, and nothing on the left, its appears that the machine lost traction on the one side and suddenly veered to the right, effectively throwing me off. It wasn't very even as the ground dropped away slightly on the left side, which u couldn't really see when travelling thro. This could have resulted in either a broken arm/hip or much worse, and a hospital visit as the team were very concerned at the time. I think a detailed investigation into this incident should be made. ********************************************************************************************************************* To date, nothing has been done. I still have tenderness an swelling and a lump on my lower arm as a result of the fall........................

Hello, it's too bad you got hurt on your Segway ride. They are a blast to ride as long as you stay safe. It is tough to say for sure what happened since I wasn't there but I can say that it is very common for someone who falls from a Segway to believe the Segway is at fault. I have been working with Segways for more than 10 years now and I have seen falls first hand before. I am surprised at how often the rider gets up and asks me why their Segway caused them to fall. In each case that I have seen, the Segway clearly was functioning properly and the fall was caused by something the rider did. Most of the time, it is caused by either the Segway's wheel hitting a fixed object or loosing traction and slipping on the ground (which is likely what happened in your case based on what you have described). When either of these things happen, the Segway either falls instantly or the rider panics and causes the Segway to fall after the initial slip or trip. If you tried to slow down or speed up too suddenly for the conditions, that can cause the Segway's wheel to loose traction. The Segway and it's computers cannot always balance you if its wheels do not have traction. The Segway will not simply spin a wheel and cause a fall on its own but a wheel can loose traction and spin as a result of rider input that can cause a fall. You would be amazed at how well-built the machines are. There is quite a bit of redundancy built in to the balance systems designed to keep the rider safe. If any problem is detected that could be a safety hazard, the Segway will perform an emergency shutdown telling the rider that her or she must exit immediately. It does this using a series of redundant systems such that any system can fail and the machine will still be able to balance you safely and bring you to a stop. They fail quite rarely, but when they fail, they do it gracefully. As I am a servicing dealer, I have been repairing Segways for the past 10 years so all the broken ones in San Diego come through my door. I have even tried to see if I could fool the safety systems on broken machines into letting me fall (in a safe way of course). I remember once that I had a machine in the shop that had a strange problem. I could turn it on and it would power up but only for a fraction of a second before it would shut itself down with an error message on the display. I wanted to know, if I could stand on the Segway in the tiny fraction of a second when it was on, but before it shut itself down, would it let me fall? This was easy to test safely since I didn't need to stand on it. I could just rest a foot on the platform and as far as the Segway is concerned, I was standing on it. It took quite a few tries, but when I finally timed it right, sure enough, the Segway didn't let me fall. Rather than powering off (remember, this was a broken machine), It went into emergency shutdown mode which keeps me safe and balanced until I exit the platform. As soon as I took my foot off the platform, the machine knew I was not standing on it and that it was safe to shut down; so it did. I have seen people slip their Segway tires and still remain upright. The Segway has some ability to keep you balanced when a tire slips and it does its best to keep you safe, but like any machine, it has its limits. I am pretty confident that the company offering the Segway tours will check the Segway out but I doubt they will find anything wrong with it. If you can muster up the courage to try riding again, hopefully you will have a great time.

Thanks for your insight an helpful comments, I have riden mountain bikes, quads, buggies, scooters, motorbikes, cars, truck an vans, hence my complete an utter shock when it happened! It does seem that it was a loss of traction on one of the wheels which caused the segway to fail, effectively throwing me off. Its just a shame I had to experience it on my first trip on one. I will be very wary of attempting it again unless I'm on a smoother rd/path!

Faith Community Church Newport Ok aren't you leaving out a very important detail? When you say --> "You proceeded to take this much narrower path though a small opening with posts either side, the machine suddenly (and without warning) threw me off." Aren't you leaving out the part where YOU (the operator) let one of your PTV tires HIT one of the post? Lets be totally honest here ok. After all you're a Church going person like myself. As for the investigation I don't see that one is needed because I just got to the bottom of the whole thing just by reading your yt comment and analyzing your choice of words and lack there of. Now who is at fault here? Well its certainly NOT the Segways fault right? The Segway is just a machine that responds to operator input. It has no emotion and held no malice towards YOU.. Please tell me that we're in agreement so far?Now is this accident your instructors fault? Possibly BUT how would you have felt had he done his job and told you that even after your extensive training class he still doesn't have enough faith in your ability to operate the machine safely? Wouldn't you have felt insulted and maybe even cheated? At the end of the day you are responsible for your accident and YOU HIT THE DAMN POST causing yourself to get thrown off the machine. SO PLEASE for the love of our Lord and Savior, please take responsibility for yourself, your actions and your own failures ok. Not everything has to be someone else's fault. You even started off your comment with irrelevant facts in hopes of DAMNING the Segway and/or Segway company. Like when you said that you signed up for the course and you were the only one that showed up.. Well that's great! This should have worked in your favor as you were getting some meaningful one-on-one time with the instructor. Here is the deal with off-road PTV's. Yes they have big ATV looking tires but guess what? You only have two of them NOT FOUR, NOT THREE! A Segway or any kind of self-balancing PTV are very athletic machines that require YOU to be aggressive and sharp in order to ride safely. They don't simply let you hop on their back then start doing all of your thinking for you like a horse would. Now that I think about it a little more I am leaning towards blaming your instructor for not weeding you out, giving you your money back and sending you home. He should have NEVER let you on that machine! Heck you cant even admit that you hit the post and ya know damn well you did.. I can tell by the way you danced around the issue in your story. lol Just chalk this up to "Segways aren't for YOU" and all will be right in the world again! Right?

Well George you should have been an accident investigator, but you wouldn't have lasted long! The one thing I didn't mention was about hitting the post! That's because I didn't, I had already passed in between the 2 posts, then the machine lost traction suddenly on the one side, I can only assume, (as I was there) it must have been some mud................ That's y it veered to the one side. Thank you for your helpful insights. Although I'm puzzled why u feel the need to protect the reputation of a Segway instructor. It was obviously not a suitable course for a novice on his first run. If u read my account, I had already completed 1 half of the course, the instructor decided to take me thro a more advanced course going back, which he felt would be ideal for me, it wasn't. As for "YOU HIT THE DAMN POST causing yourself to get thrown off the machine. SO PLEASE for the love of our Lord and Savior" The Lord is my witness and He knows what happened, you don't, for all your conjecture.. As the statement from an experienced dealer/ operator of these machines explains: "Most of the time, it is caused by either the Segway's wheel hitting a fixed object or loosing traction and slipping on the ground (which is likely what happened in your case based on what you have described). The Segway will not simply spin a wheel and cause a fall on its own but a wheel can loose traction and spin as a result of rider input that can cause a fall." There's the voice of a "real expert", which u claim to be! Anyway blessings to you.
