At Bay Stencil, when you find the gallery image you like, you have to go 'Back to Image' (it's the page that shows 9 options for the stencilization), and then you choose 'Download Halftone SVGs' and then for the one-layer (grayscale) halftone you just choose 'Grayscale' instead of 'CMYK'. We're still working on how to surface the feature so that it's easier to get to from the Gallery. That's a few weeks or a month away.

Lots of art teachers are using Bay Stencil to train students to 'see' images in terms of dark-light, but i have yet to see a teacher use the halftones with a class. It's just the website, no need of Photoshop or Illustrator. You need to have access to craft or laser cutter for the students to cut stencils on. yes, i use kingspray to test how a stencil would work without actually cutting it

it was a white spray paint i used, the intent was to reduce some of the contrasting color so that the detail would be given over to the black halftone (in case the colors weren't exactly on the boundaries) also lightened the background so that the black halftone is more effective. i probably used a little too much as others pointed out

actually, if you stay away from plastic areas, rubber window gaskets, etc, the chalk is 100% removable. also, if you leave it on for like 6 months there could be some ghost image due to weathering (sun damage) where the chalk is not covering the paint

depends on your brand of paint: i needed two greens for this one; and i usually have two greens but if i don't i can usually make a second green by 'mixing in' a little yellow or another light color

you can use any cricut that runs on design space

you can! but you shouldn't put the stencil on a wet surface. that leaves you three options: 1. use a single-layer stencil only, and only at the beginning 2. wait a really long time between layers 3. spray a light spray paint down to use as a template for where to paint with your brush I've had the best results with the last option

oh, and if you don't care about the stencil smearing the layer underneath, then you can put a stencil down on wet paint. but it's going to smear for sure

this technique is great for portraits, you can upload any image to Bay stencil and get the cmyk halftones back: cmyk is meant to produce 'any' color visually though, so it doesn't help to add a random color. there are halftone color models that use 7 colors though, i just don't find they add a lot for the number of stencils you have to cut and paint

each filter in the cmyk download is named by hex color. so cyan is 00ffff, magenta is ff00ff, yellow is ffff00 and black is 000000

use bay stencil to get the linear halftones from any image, you can cut by hand but it's much easier with a cnc cutter

this one was cut on a laser cutter, but craft cutters like the cricut work as well. if you cut by hand you need to print out and paste the printout over your card stock or other medium for cutting with a sharp blade

thanks for the tip! the problem I'm running into these days is getting bright colors to show up on dark backgrounds and the only solution I've found so far is to paint white underneath. any suggestions?
