Chessie owner shot a duck in outgoing tide at shinnecock inlet NY ..tried calling dog back..but high winds waves and current going out to a very rough ocean..the dog soon disappeared from his binoculars in high surf half a mile into the ocean..he and his son waited for 3 hours..no dog ..heartbroken they drove home over the bridge from the barrier island..at home some 7 hours later. Full dark night...they received a phone call from the bridge operator George who they knew..George would raise and lower bridge for larger vessels etc..well ol George said..Charlie..don't you have a curly coat brown dog ..Charlie said we did..I made a mistake today and fear I lost him forever..well said ol George..one just ran across my bridge with a duck in his mouth and is headed down your way ..8 miles and almost 12 hours later..Charlie's Chesapeake bay retriever was bringing home the duck..true story..the Chessie..and I've seen this with ours..if caught in awful current or undertoe..they don't fight it ..they never panic..their senses tell them exactly what to do to survive even the most harrowing of situations..I could go on and on about some of the most crazy intelligent..brute force power of these dogs..but I'll leave it at that..lastly..our first Chessie came from August Belmont..yes the wealthy race track owning billionaire. Just another famous person who loves the Chesapeake bay retriever.

My Chesapeake was afraid of water. He would wade, but if he took a step, and all of a sudden, the bottom gave way, he was out of that water so fast. He wouldn’t even attempt to paddle. He was a great dog though, Norman, we love, and miss you buddy.

I live at the top of the Chesapeake Bay. Where the bay starts. The Chesapeake Bay retrieve r , was created here. Water fowl hunting is a VERY BIG THING HERE!!!! BUT IT IS VERY RARE TO SEE ANY ONE WITH THIS DOG!!!!! THEY ARE EXTREMELY AGRESSIVE!!!!! ALSO TO THEIR OWNERS!!!!! SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG WITH THEIR BREED. THEY CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS. PLEASE FIND OUT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ABOUT THIS BREED BEFORE GETTING ONE.

My all time favorite breed. I have owned two of them and I absolutely love the breed. I am beyond having any more dogs, but if I were to get another dog......it would definitely be a ' Chessy ' ! Gorgeous, gorgeous dogs and great companions !

I live in the U.K. and own Chesapeakes. There is some theory that the blood lines go back to the extinct breed of Norfolk Retrievers in England that were used aboard sailing ships for work there as well as hunting. An interesting theory to explore. Terrific dogs in my opinion.

Chessie has been the best dog I have owned.

One of mine was a legend. Ask anyone who tried to go near any game she'd gathered!

No one would dare to get in my unattended car!

I've had several and still have two. Not just great retrieving dogs but excellent trackers for deer. I even had one that was a keen ratter!

No Chessie in this movie. Edward is played by a Cardigan Welsh Corgi....😩

Our Chessie went over the rainbow last year. Still not over it. She was my best friend and best dog. Will never be able to replace her.
