Hello, I am intrigued by your title "nyonya" = western. IT has nothing to do with western (mean europe culture) This is furthest from the truth, nyonya is a sub-group of Chinese men (most fujian) who moved to south east asia without Chinese women and married with local women. The progenies adopted chinese culture but are essentially mix race people. This happened before men from china moved to SEA without women. When the chinese moved to SEA with women, this stopped. And this sub group lingered as a sub-group of overseas chinese in SEA. It has more or less died out in SEA as of today. The term 'nyonya' is mostly used in Malaysia and Singapore. But this concept of men from China marry local can be found everywhere in SEA. Philippines, vietnam, Laos, Thailand, MY, SG and Indonesia. In each country, the circumstances and results are different. Therefore, it has nothing to do Europeans.
