    In the 70s, I bought a 12 inch vinyl with this material. It has a very professional, color, glossy album cover, (for what I assumed to be a bootleg at the time.) the photo of him appears to be from a later year (after international success), And having been interested ,& from years of research, I knew of the involvement with E. Chaplin…. The title of the album is Jimi Hendrix at his best.

    I think this ep is a much stronger package than the debut album. I think Things ain't Working Out is the stand out in the sense that it sounds like a band with a focus and direction. Dublin is one of my favourite ever songs. Some people get song lyrics confused with poetry, but Dublin is genuine poetry and it's beautiful. There is a version that is just Phil speaking the verse. Old Moon Madness I guess you could call progressive jazz. It's an outlier, but it shows there were other directions in which the band could gone. I don't think Eric sounded comfortable on the solo though. Remembering Part 2 is quite a strong melodic rocked up acoustic song. Shades... is a patchy album, but has some gems, and Vagabonds.... I think is one of the band's strongest albums and probably Phil's peak as a songwriter.

    • @SubterraneanVisions
      @SubterraneanVisions หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dublin did surprise me, I need to revisit it and get the lyrics, so sublime. This is a strong effort, Debut was near perfect if they had substituted these tunes minus Old Moon Madness for lesser ones. I have snatched a few golden ones from Shades and will need to revisit Vagabonds as I've only taken a superficial pass through it.

    It sounds to me like the band just weren't ready when they went into the studio and the arrangements needed more work. But as a three piece maybe this is the way they sounded on stage. The EP tracks are much better from what I remember, and by the time they get to Vagabonds, however Eric felt, they came up with a great album.

    • @SubterraneanVisions
      @SubterraneanVisions หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I am doing the EP next as a continuation of the 1st album as it was only done a few months later and was in search of a single more or less. It does sound better produced on the whole while still retaining the soul of the 3 members. Overall, if they mixed in the EP with the 1st album it would have been a very strong debut album!

    • @delorangeade
      @delorangeade หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SubterraneanVisions There was a compilation released in 1976, possibly German, called Remembering which included the first two albums, the EP and some Gary Moore tracks. I bought that, so I'm never entirely sure which track originally appeared where. There is an album coming out soon where Eric Bell has gone back to these original tracks and recorded new acoustic guitars to replace the electric. I'm not sure I entirely approve of the idea, but it might be interesting to hear.

      @@delorangeade Yes I also heard that a couple days ago with Eric Bell. I wouldn't mind hearing original demos that were done acoustically but doing them 50 years later with Phil's original vocals is a little disenchanting. They didn't mention Brian Downey at all. But who knows it may be very listenable?

  • @delorangeade
    @delorangeade หลายเดือนก่อน

    One thing that never changed throughout Lizzy's career was the greatness of Brian Downey. In some ways it's regrettable the more poetic Lynott got swallowed up by the rock star, just like Bruce Springsteen's first albums had something about them that was unfortunately lost along the way. Diddly Levine is autobiographical, as is Look What the Wind Blew In. Ray Gun is about Hendrix.

    • @SubterraneanVisions
      @SubterraneanVisions หลายเดือนก่อน

      True, Brian Downey was certainly never without skill and taste, always kept the song interesting but was not flamboyant and indulgent. I definitely hear a Hendrix presence in these early tracks, it is very sad Phil didn't get enough support for his poeticism, he was had a unique voice in the muck of rock lyrical content.

    Interesting 😎 read. I will listen to that tune. Don't think I have heard it yet, though may have as he has so many. I picked this tune while I also thought about moppin the bride or Danse norvegienne as they were on the cassette tape I initially found by him. I do hear him hesitate a bit here for note choice which is not like him but the solo is still of course quite striking and beautiful. I agree I like the clarity of this amplified sound over the muffled jazz tone later adopted by some. Whereas on the acoustic unamplified gypsy sound it's cuts the mid and bass tones. His later period was not a downgrade compositionally by any means nor his playing. But I am not sure if he had always played amplified if we would not be losing something. Of course we might need to sit and listen to some to formulate my thoughts better. 😊 Appreciate the view and communication!

    Funny thing is the pickups and amps Django used sound incredible. And are easy to replicate today and still sound great. Many Gypsy jazzers today use that tone with a Selmer style guitar or a Gibson. The blues masters would take the torch on harsh tones then distortion blossomed of course. And many guitarists would hear that tone for the first time from blues, but that was much later than the 40s when Django was doing it. I prefer Django’s tone here to the overly sweet jazz guitar tone that Christian used and became standard. Too mellow I would recommend you listen to Songe D’autome - both takes. Djangos tone sounds perfect for what he’s playing. Cuts like a knife. But really all the electric recordings are very fine work, def not a downgrade from his acoustic stuff. The maestro doesn’t miss, that’s for sure. Seems random that you were drawn to this recording specifically, tho it is an interesting tune. His solo is a bit hesitant tho. Most of the rest of these recordings he’s totally confident haha.

I did peruse your channel, as you said there are so many artists to dig into. Fenton Robinson is a favorite as well as Johnny Young when I heard some mandolin blues, so unique.

    Steve Morse! I saw the Dregs on the What if tour. I've been fortunate enough to have seen them 11 times, including their last reunion tour. Unfortunately, Marshall was destroyed by flooding caused by hurricane Helene.

Loved him from Kansas as well but haven't gone as deep listening as I should perhaps. Thanks for the memory!

I almost did a blues as I realized I wasn't finding one that was clearly somehow the greatest. I have loved and listened to so much country blues ala Rev. Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Brownie Mcghee. Alvin Youngblood Hart being my favorite modern interpreter. Also though about jazz blues as well ala Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, and Wes with Jimmy Smith, "Mellow Mood". But I did include one coming up.
