Just remembered something! I think i know what that portrait curse is a reference to, potentially. In Rondo of Blood there was a mini boss on the ghost ship whose a ghost that possesses a portrait. He has an instant kill attack that shows him turning Maria or Richter into a portrait inside his portrait as he kills them. I remembered raging at that boss when I was a kid

I think there was a point were the show changed forever and that is between episodes 106 (Bible Games III) and 107 (Schwarzenegger Games). A lot of relevant things happened there; Bible Games was the last episode he made in association with Game Trailers, he started to shot in HD, he started to work in the movie, he realized that he was gonna be a father... And there was like a half year gap between episodes, probably the longest of his career. The classic AVGN era was 2006-2011, when the show was raw and passionate, you could notice that James actually enjoyed playing the role. With the first episode of 2012 however, while still good and funny, it had a different vibe, like it was becoming corporate and James just started to act as the Nerd instead of being the Nerd. Things just got worse from there, nowadays, when I see a new AVGN episode I just don´t recognize the character from years ago. The anger feels so fake and the jokes kind of generic. Somebody once said that James went from being the Angry Video Game Nerd to being the Wholesome Video Game Dad, and that´s just sounds so fitting.

The bit about “Demon’s Souls 3” seems to be about how, according to the code within the Alpha/“Project Beast” builds of the game (and even up to the Retail release copies), both FromSoftware and SCE Japan Studio seem to refer to the game as “DeS2”. That would correspond to Demon’s Souls’s common abbreviation of “DeS” and would seemingly confirm that the game began as “Demon’s Souls 2” originally. One would imagine that they’d want to make a sequel to their cult classic game that brought them enough renown to refine it further under Bandai-Namco as “Dark Souls”, so I can see them beginning the game from there and it evolving into something far greater over time. Even the bit about “umbasa” being said by Gascoine is just a small piece of why people originally thought that it was meant to indicate DeS2 (not 3) since the ENTIRE ORIGINAL PLOT from what we could all parse together from what’s still in the code of the discs/alpha builds is - that Yharnam was built over Boletaria - THOUSANDS OF YEARS have passed - much of the same religious beliefs have persevered but “warped” over the centuries/millenia - while not outright stated, the “Beast Curse” may have began with the consequences of the player character’s actions at the end of Demon’s Souls (Spoilers for anyone who hasn’t played it) Since you’re more or less encouraged by the game to “commune” with the Old God - “The Old God” may have been either an “Old One” like we see in Bloodborne…or where the concept of the Old Ones expanded off of once the LoveCraft influences started flowing - Micolash was originally a clergyman and Laurence is implied to have been the MC’s close friend that called them down to Yharnam - Cainhearst was originally MUCH MORE INVOLVED IN THE STORYLINE since it’s another place you go to find Laurence (and end up running into someone named “Norbit”); Logarius iirc was also much different, which was the same thing for Mergo’s Wet Nurse (who was a ‘’Nightmare Succubus” according to the code) - you were originally going to be able to collect “Boss Souls” in the form of “Livers” and that discovery is how they were able to piece together the structure of the original plot LOOSELY - we still don’t know the original planned climax + ending for “DeS2”, but I’m hoping they release more info about it someday The development of Bloodborne was so scattershot, it’s a wonder that it didn’t end up in Development Hell like Demon’s Souls did. I’m very much happy with what they ultimately decided on…but still. The fact that it began as Demon’s Souls 2 is SOO DAMN INTERESTING since it makes you wonder how they planned to follow it up…

I always feel sad when I see a bunch of comments on videos like these saying "well, life changes, you grow up, he's got muh kids, etc." He ain't working in a fucking supermarket. He hired incompetent people to run his show, while he just shows up, reads the lines and gets the fuck out. You clearly see he doesn't care. Great example is Mike getting pissed and saying how James will beat the game on his own. He tried to say it with a smile, but then he looked away and you could see that he was angry as hell. I would be too. So, why doesn't the argument "well, life happened" work here? Well guess what, James is an entertainer. You do a trivial, menial job, you can slack off. He can go back to shit-mart and not care, but when you're an entertainer, and you pay the bills by views, that is, people you entertain, you can't not care, at least not that much that it's so easily visible. If he doesn't want to spend time doing the Nerd, he can just stop. A ton of his fans wants from him to do something that he likes, that he wants. Even the Monster madness, that was his pride and reason to fucking exist was slacked off and plagiarized. Yes, life changes, but he is actually just shilling for sponsorships now and doing the hollow shows with no humor, fun or anything with a soul and it's a fucking ruse. Watching Cinemassacre shows in the past few years is the same thing as watching movies Bruce Willis was in the last years of his career - slacking off, reading the lines, getting his check and going home. Hang it up, find something else. You can't honestly say "I like this more than some other job" and even act like it. If that's how things are, stop doing it, do something else. The creators probably anticipated people avoiding them so they stuck a few good ones in the late game just in case you started thinking you needed one

James painted himself into a corner with AVGN. The Nerd became so popular that nothing else he tried to do could top it. I enjoy seasons 1-10 of AVGN, 1-6 being peak AVGN, but after that, not so good. Early rental reviews had some great episodes and the Monster Madness series he did before they stopped being annual for a while were great. The reason for these things being good for me is, you can tell the games and films he's talking about he has grown up with. They are a part of his childhood and the fabric of his interest in games and movies, and you feel it in his presentation and the production. Once that stopped, everything fell off. He's doing AVGN because he has to in order to feed his family, and I understand that. But I just wish he'd find something that not only pays the bills, but that he loves, because when he's genuinely passionate, he does pretty good work.
