I ran across your channel and I love the blanket u made so very beautiful. I want to start making socks myself. I found a pattern that very easy to make booties, and when I say easy, I mean easy big needles amd I made a pair in one day!! But I really want to make REAL SOCKS WITH THE CHIAO GOO NEEDLES. I can't even imagine being somewhere that cold. My blood is so thin from living in Hawaii that I don't think I'd survive! Have a great 2018 (with new puppy and all!)! I'm going to check out your MAL. I'm considering starting a crochet top for myself (that actually fits). I have the yarn and the pattern and, like you said, it's time to carpe diem and start the thing!

I have done sock heels as you were supposing: use the other end of the skein so your stripes stay in sequence. Works fine. My foot size is an 8-8.5 (US). My fingering wt. socks are 64 stitches, size 0-1 (2.0 or 2.25mm) needles, depending on yarn thickness. My gauge is usually 8 - 8.5 stitches per inch.
