Wisps in the Aether -- HWJ Weekend Challenge "Noise"
This week we had a Noisevember challenge theme of incorporating noise into our jams. Here's my improvisational noodling on the SY99 backed by the TipTop Buchla 200 series modules going thru a Meris Mercury X.

Quick test of a pair of TipTop Buchla 259t Complex oscillators. It been 40 years since I spent much time with the originals back in college, there's a LOT to remember all the crazy things they can do. And, they very much remind you that 'a little goes a long way' with all the timbral modulation and shaping possibilities.

This video shows the various pitch/phase tricks for stereo imaging for the SawCorePWM patch I couldn't demonstrate in Dr. Synth's Phase Time Playhouse EP.1 live stream due to audio issues (Live stream here: th-cam.com/video/HyGpGPm_hAo/w-d-xo.html ). It also lets you hear how the final patch sounds !

This week's challenge was to come up with something you might listen to while taking a road trip... Fired up the Muse, PolyBrute12, Hydrasynth and (mostly) got them synced up; Revved up the AX80 for some sweet synth strings, and did three takes of live improvisations, This is take 2

I run through a few of the Moog Muse presets to showcase the sound quality, timbral range and some of the real time control capabilities. The continuously variable Oscillator waveforms, the Mod Oscillator options, and bi-directional Oscillator FM cross modulation gives a lot of sonic possibilities. The Macro Knob can be used for multiple simultaneous modulations to create Patch morphing. Every ...

This week's theme was a jam having the sense of small places, tiny twisting passages, the walls closing in on you etc., giving the feeling of claustrophobia. Based on simultaneous rising and descending pitch modulations of different sonic elements to give a creepy 'closing in' feeling. Using the new kid TipTop Buchla rack w/ the Klee Sequential Summation Array for the heavy lifting. Using the W...

World's Fattest Synth Pad
มุมมอง 3.2K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
The world's biggest, fattest, best sounding synth pad sound... realized on the Yamaha SY99 from 1991 using all FM synthesis and no effects! Just the power of the AFM synth engine. Excuse the click-bait title LOL! That said, pick your favorite vintage or modern analog or digital synth and the SY99's core AFM engine can still slap it silly... ;) This sawtooth synth pad patch sounds bigger, fatter...
Labbarhythm -- HWJ Weekend Challenge 'The Maze'

This weeks theme was doing a jam of what you might be hearing as you navigate through a maze. For whatever reason I thought of the old mainframe text game "Adventure" ( later 'Zork') and the part where you encounter "A maze of twisty little passages, all different..." So I put together a jam of subtly shifting, variable patterns... "A maze of twisting little passages, all different..."; "A twis...

So he's my jam with a lot of 'wrong' sounds blended with some 'right' ones so it's not a cacophony catastrophe ! Threw in some other random 'wrong' (or at least very unexpected) things as well. These weeks challenge was an interesting one: “There is a theory that we are all living on a giant turtles in space!! This weeks theme was 'Techno' whatever that would mean to us. Well, when I was a kid this is what techno was like for me.... 3rd Wave - doing the old school analog drum machine thing and bassline SY99 - everything else and reliving the vintage experience having fun finding a tempo that mostly synced up with the SY99 LFO's... Apologies again for the few audio glitches. Still never sussed out why...

Grand Work Manny! :D
what a fab jam! Love how you built it up and of course it sounds fantastic 💜💜👍👍
so original, i dig the layering with the ocean waves and the flute-y synths 👏 love the bassy digeridoo 🔥
Love it. Nicely done
I was having dinner while you live streamed this, otherwise I would have gladly joined the live chat. I remain utterly amazed at how capable and deep the SY series of FM synths are. I had no idea that any of this could be done on the SYs (because I've never owned one, and if anyone in the UK wants to bring one to my door, leave a comment. I'll put the kettle on and supply the chocolate biscuits. LOL). Granted, 30+ years ago I was borrowing a friend's 4-op V50, which I don't believe had this sort of intricate level of programming. But maybe it did and I missed it. I remember being truly mystified by the whole FM thing at the time. Didn't have internet access or videos and had to rely on trips to an actual library or magazine articles, mostly, and those tended to be simple "do this for this patch sound" articles -- patch programming how-to guides of that era. As for the Modwave, it is indeed sad that we can't do FM on the samples, and I really wish we could. I also have an Opsix, and I love that, yet agree with you that the lack of phase offsets is sorely missed -- not the end of the world though and the control surface is a stroke of genius. We can phase offset the wavetables in the Modwave though, and use a wavetable as a source input for for the FM oscillator (very, very cool!). However, the Modwave seems to convert the FM osc to a sine wave first when morphing/increasing the FM depth, so it's a wee bit limited in that regard. Can still get some wild craziness regardless. Anyway, this stream was superb, Manny. Much learned and thank you so much!
Thanks for watching, hope it gives you some ideas that you can apply to other synths. Interesting with the Modwave and the sine wave substitution thing. One thing I love about the Hydrsynth is you can FM two Wavetables. Re: Yamaha 4 Op FM synths, no they don't have this type of sophistication.
@@DrSynth Yes, it does give me a few ideas - thank you. The Hydra's FM mutants certainly can go crazy. The Modwave's FM implementation is all right and certainly musical or wild, and we can use a sample as the modulator -- just can't use a sample as the carrier for some reason. When the carrier is a wavetable and the FM morph depth is increased, moving through the carrier wavetable produces an incredibly subtle wavy modulation, and you don't really hear any of the harmonic content of the carrier. The analyzer reveals that the carrier is mostly a sine wave -- particularly noticeable when the modulator is a short sample that has no sustain. Anyway, the FM depth seems to transform the carrier wavetable into a sine wave.
As said, "RCM puts FM to another level". After 30 years walking in the dark, it is remarkably interesting to learn the background of Yamaha's failed attempt to come up with something different. Possibly you also have the answer to the mystery about how the Harmonic Enhancer in the VL1 is working? I always assumed this as some kind of RCM as well.
Robert, it wouldn't surprise me if the Harmonic Enhancer uses some sort of phase modulation/waveshaping tricks. I'll have to ask Toshi ...
Juicy!
Nice one, Manny! This doesn’t help my GAS
Sounds great! Looking forward to picking up the 259t 🙂
Made in China! Not a real Moog.
Never throw away your ties. 🎯
*drooool* I'm almost completely deaf, but I can totally FEEL the pure, simple WAVES [on tiny plastic computer speakers, no less]. I rest my hands on the speakers [bone conduction] and see the sine, sawtooth, square, triangle waves in my positronic brain. KRAFTWERK Cymatics! Now play the 5 notes.. CE3K flashback.. I like the harmonic resonant tones.. Nice vibes!
chewy chewy strings. bravo! Any plans to cover RCM? cheers Rich
Very cool, thanks for doing this!
Thank you for doing these types of explorations into the powerhouse SY77/99. Year after year it unlocks more and more potential than almost any other synth of its era. The SY and K2x’s VAST are desert island synths and for early 90s the folks behind the scenes were geniuses to design such robust creations.
Listened on playback, SO SORRY for the audio. Thankfully the demonstration of the intended sonic results still come across. Still looking into what TH-cam settings borked it, used the same OBS Studio audio settings from when I join PSN and Pub via Chrome 🤷♂ **uploaded video with the stereo edits here: th-cam.com/video/cyK-GIQLmY0/w-d-xo.html **
...I've got my sy99 plumbed in now...look forward to having a play with phase
Thanks for everyone who joined in; I'll suss out the audio quality & stereo issue for next time !
More or less the same on a tg77?
yep !
Question: If I understand correctly a saw tooth is generated by starting with a sine wave and introducing self modulation, yes? But it seems that you are saying the output level also affects the amount of self modulation?? So the output needs to be relatively high to turn the sine into a saw? Am I understanding correctly? If so, then how do you create a *quiet* saw wave? e.g. Suppose you wanted to envelope the output of a saw wave, so that it started loud but got quieter, but stayed a saw wave throughout. How would you do that?
For that you would use a 2-OP pair, with the self feedback on the Modulator operator. The Carrier would have its envelope/level control the volume and the Modulator's envelope/level would control the brightness. Have both set to a tuning ratio of 1.00 and set self feedback on the Modulator to 7
@@DrSynth Thanks! That makes sense.
awesome jam! 🔥🔥🔥
Brilliant jam and nice synths 🙂
Very nice synthesizer. The problem is that the Juno-X is now getting discounted, so for an extra $500 one can get a 256-voice polyphony Juno-X as opposed to 32-voice UB-Xa. Note: I am counting each oscillator as a voice. You know, like the D-50 is a 32-oscillator synthesizer with 16-notes of polyphony. Exactly the same as the UB-Xa.
Super nice variety of timbres! Full-FM tracks are often hard on the ears, especially with headphones. I don't know if you mastered it so as to mitigate the high-frequency content, but the result is incredible.
no mastering, all sounds recorded directly out of the RefaceDX with only their onboard effects, that's how they sound. Just added a little global reverb.
@@DrSynth I've always felt that these on-board effects have a powerful smoothing quality. I hear now how they can help the mix. Again, the result is wonderful and inspiring, bravo and thank you
good to put a name to a face. shiny jam
this is superb - such a treat for the ears!
Love the sounds of course!! Fantastic fun ❤
Thanks ! A lot of my jams are kinda like 12" extended remix sound patch demos 🤣
@@DrSynth oh they’re much more than that Manny. It maybe how you jump off but your jams are recognisably such, always fun and imaginative! 💖
Definite drive jam!! Nice work Dr. Synth
HWJ livestream brought me here - so cool seeing a muse and poly 12 vibing together!
Great jam buddy
Don’t force me to require a PB12 now! Not fair.
😅 your Muse should keep you happy for a while !
Thank you so much for bringin the AX80 to the party. That Tauntek firmware update gives it full midi implementation. Best to buy it through their website. With some Midi faders, it becomes a massive poly synth. Motorized faders make’s it even better! Thank you for sharing🌊✨🌊
Dr.- wow. gorgeous . atch you later- )
This is cool. Certainly fulfils the brief. Loving the sounds of the lead synths.
🔮🛸not bad
As a somewhat beginner to programming synth, this really opens my mind as to the process behind why some of the reasons the hailed synths of the past sounded so good & rich. Im assuming the world of vst synths in a DAW offer many practical work arounds to achieve a similar final result despite limitations in a lone vst vs this well constructed keyboard. Im also sure it wont sound as rich in the end w/o adding other percs to compete with the hardware of a real quality keyboard like this. Im going to watch the deep dive video & rewatch this video dozens of times but is there a way to simplify & summarize what you just did to help beginners like me understand a bit further? To sum up what i understand: you added sprinkles of modulation to the pitch & time of the operators to create a thicker saw tooth via phase offset, then you created a fake reverb copy w/ different parameters, then you turned them into stereo duplicates & panned them musically w/ additional minor phase offset to help them add to each other rather than cancel via phase issues(similar to how chorus fx works). Is that the jist of it? Is there something in particular else you could add to my understanding of what I just saw you do? Is it in particular important as to what is triggering the pitch modulation because from what i remember seeing in other tutorials for other synths, you can link it to so many other things that trigger it? Am I using these terms right? Ive literally never done any of this before but have a grasp via years of mixing my demos in a DAW learning how sound design works. Thanks, any tips from anybody is welcome.
yes, that is the list of it. In regards to the pitch modulation, it is not 'triggered' but rather predetermined amounts and are free running so are constantly drifting
ehh. Nothing mind blowing.
Sounds nice!
wow this is awesome, and what a sound. i've made a bunch of patches on the SY77 using some of these AFM tricks but never even considered piping AFM waveforms through the AWM side. there is an extra layer of satisfaction making a lush patch with the 'effects off' notification.
Another great Lesson in SYnth programming, in sound designing. Thanks to D.r SYnth😊!!
Sounds killer. If I didn’t already have a Prophet 6 and 3rd Wave I’d totally scoop up the Muse
Hmmm... Is it 1983 today to make EP patches on an analogue synth ? What for ?
Its 1983 every day ! -- Seriously though, one of the goals in doing the factory presets is to demonstrate the capabilities of the synthesizer. The Muse has one of the best FM implementations in analog synthesizers, and so a number of the patches I did was to show that off, and this sound (love it or hate it) is an FM classic. The bass part of Bassionic @4:30 uses the bi-directional loops of Osc's 1 & 2 for another FM flavor.
