Thanks for comment i actually retired at 46 about 8 yrs ago.No trick to it i worked really hard in my 20s and 30s sometimes 2,3 jobs.I invested in real estate and got lucky regarding timing (flipped real estate for nice profit). My advice use your younger yrs and work your butt off at one stage i was working almost 24 hour days for weeks months even. I hated the fact of the average person living a life of all work then turning 65 and retire to me that's not living so I made goals and to retire early so to enjoy life at younger age.Sorry it's not a magical get rich easy formula but I just refused to give up and in the end I got there,so good luck i hope you have a great new year and believe in yourself it's your best asset...YOU

If you own your house and you can rent it out for $650 a week, take out expenses of $120 a week, leaves $530.00 gross, tax @ 30% as an overseas resident = $160.00 leaves $370.00 net per week. In Thailand you can live as well as you are in Sydney for $30,000 AUD a year, you would be getting $20,000 net a year from your rent in Aussie. Thats rent, food, beer, transport (you can own a car, but we all own scooters as well - so you use the scooter for 85% of transport - trust me you would). So you only need to find another $10,000 a year. You say you are a self funded retiree that tells me you must earn $70,000 a year at least to be self funded not relying on age pension. You could live like a king here for way less than in Aussie. Check out the many TH-cam channels that tell you all about living in Thailand.

that 6 thousand dollars would have been better spent on solar panels. my wife and i are off grid 34 yrs now. i have about 180 panels i bought secondhand 30 dol. each. our shower is a beer barrel with a 45 watt element out of a hair curler. it took a few days to reach max temp. it can be left on full time without a thermostat. it is only on in daylight hours and is hot enough for our daily showers. kitchen has a barrel next to sink with 2,400 watt element connected to a couple of dozen panels turned on and off as required. bath tub has the same with 250 litre tank and we get to have full bath of hot water most of the time. we have an induction cooktop and have used NO gas for about 25 yrs.if you disconnect from the grid can you be legally forced to pay line rental, since it is all privatised now i don't see how they could force you to pay it.

Sure, Australia is expensive but this is a growing problem in many other countries - UK, Canada, US are just as bad. Your costs will be similar to those countries but also consider that wages are relatively high in Australia - certainly more than Canada and the UK. Boil it down and our biggest problem is mass unskilled immigration - it's out of control. But we've voted for it as both parties are to blame for this. Next election, vote for the party that will reduce immigration the most. Your other problem is that you live in Victoria which is rapidly turning into a socialist basketcase - ever bigger government and ever increasing taxes. Again, that's what you've voted for. I live in Western Australia and my experience of living is pretty different to yours.

It is out of control. The corporates own both sides of government and corporate CEO's are all about short term gain for companies because their have bonuses tied to stock prices, so they are squeezing their workforces and customers for every cent. Unless you are a millenial with boomer parents that have a portfolio of properties that will one day become yours you are screwed in Australia - the cost of living makes it impossible to build wealth. If you find yourself over 50 and made redundant, you have no chance of getting another job - many people are going to run out of money (super) in retirement. I have no idea how pensioners survive on the pension in Sydney.

  • @wealthelife

Council rates are insane -- we have had the usual 'cpi increase' that gets automatically approved, but our council recently sent a letter claiming that this was insufficient to cover the cost of all the things needed, so was seeking ratepayer 'feedback' on three proposals -- all three were basically to hike rates ABOVE cpi adjustment by more than 30% (as a permanent hike, as it would then continue to be increased by cpi adjustment in future years). Seems insane. Insurance has also increased massively -- but shopping around I was at least able to find an equivalent cover by a different insurer for close to the previous annual fee. Food prices have also gone up a lot more than the headline inflation rate would suggest -- some fresh foods have seen massive increases over recent years (eg. bananas used to be around $1 per kg, now are around $4.5 per kg -- so effectively a 'luxury' food item), and a lot of the canned goods have seen significant price rises AND are now sourced from China (with dubious quality standards) rather than being a local product. Fortunately I can afford rises in the cost of 'essentials', but it is still insane how price inflation has outstripped wage rises in recent years.
