I'm a largely self taught artist living in Coventry in the UK. This channel will showcase paintings, drawings and sketches. It will hopefully feature demonstrations of how artworks are created and will document experimentation with different media and different subject matter over time. Maybe it will document an overall improvement in ability over time!? I work in a variety of media, from pencil and charcoal for sketching, through to painting with watercolour, gouache and oil paints. Main subject interests include life drawing, still life and landscapes.
Portrait Sketching Practice - Raw Umber Studios Session
This video shows me drawing a portrait when I attended another Raw Umber Studios Live Session. I'm using willow charcoal and a white pastel pencil on grey toned paper, in this one, to build up the portrait by highlighting and shading the planes of the face. Its a difficult reference as there was strong lighting from both left and right of the model.... leaving a core shadow running down the centre of the face.

Painting a Commission - Robin in Gouache Paints
มุมมอง 7128 วันที่ผ่านมา
This video shows me painting my first real commission painting of a Robin in gouache paints. Doing commissions is something that I've historically shied away from, but because of the amount of work I have done in the last year and a half I've become confident enough to try to paint anything. I also had free reign to pick the image that I wanted to use myself which always helps. I'm an Amazon As...

こんにちは。素晴らしいです❤❤
Thanks Alice
Thank you for sharing your new art with us, Matthew .
Always love sharing
I'll look for it. Thx! Are you on IG?
Yes @MatthewAllton
Nice. primed with gesso? sanded ?
Yes primed with gesso..not sanded as quite smooth. I'd usually apply a few coats with sanding between. I did a full youtube video on prepping plywood for painting a while back
I absolutely love this, Matthew. I love watching you doing your art.
Glad you enjoy it!
💙💙✍🏼✍🏼
Thanks for continuing to watch my videos Fabry:) Do share some to people you think may like them. I'm trying to grow my views and subscribers. I hope you are well?
✨✨💙💙✍🏼✍🏼
Thanks Fabry
Beautiful
Thanks...sorry it was cut short!
Perfect drawings!
Thanks, that's very kind of you
Great result but also lovely just listening to you chat away
Thanks for subscribing! You will probably not be saying that if you watch them all! :) but do watch and like as many as you can..I need lots of watch hours this year if I'm to monetise it!
Love this sketch, Matthew, well executed. Love the way you sketch older people.
I find then easier than younger people as I think I said in the video. There are more reference points wrinkles and creases to make triangulation and placing and sizing of the features more accurately.
Hello Matthew, how are you? Tomorrow I have one of your paintings in my video. I hope you like it. Greetings Ron.
Ah great...thanks Ron...always nice to see my work getting out there:)
Love it, Matthew, one of my favourites this year. Looking forward to seeing your work in 2025.
Hopefully there will be as much in 2025 as there has been in 2024...over 260 pieces this year!!! Not bad with having a full time day job as well!!!
Lovely!
Thanks:)
Merry Christmas Matthew, thank you for sharing your art with us this year. Looking forward to seeing new art in 2025 😊
Thanks a lot for your support!
Beautiful watching you making artwork 🖌️💙
Thanks as ever Fabry. Hope you are well?
Really enjoyed seeing you sketch with the finished work next to it. Keep up with the good work you're showcasing.
Thanks:) it's been a while since I've done a long format video but there will be more over the coming weeks:)
This is really helpful <3
Thanks...although I don't tell people what to do as such in my videos, as I don't feel qualified to do so in reality, I hope that by people seeing how I approach things they might be able to try it themselves. There are quite a few life drawing videos on my channel as it's a subject that has always fascinated me
Love the different way you have presented this
Thank you Dawn. Trying a different approach to try to grow the channel for a short while
That one friend who tells others they can’t draw Amazing art though!
Not sure what you mean in the first bit? But thanks for commenting
Love it 😀
Thanks:)
So beautiful watching you creating art.... thank you so much
Thanks for the inspiration Fabry
Hai Matthew, from the 7 days I like the drawing of day 6 the most. And? did you like the challenge? Greetings Ron.
Hi Ron...thanks for watching them all. I like the old lady best out of all of them...that one really speaks to me. I also like day 1 as it was the best likeness possibly. I enjoyed the challenge so will be doing different challenges over coming months. I was thinking I might try a gouache painting sketch of figures for one of them...so might be dome stuff for you to feature in your videos from that one if I do it!?
Again, I love these sketches, Matthew. Well done on your challenges this week. I really enjoyed seeing the end results 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Lovely pieces! What details of the face do you find yourself spending the most time on? 🤔
I guess eyes really...I struggle with noses...but this week of portraits and drawing seven of them has begun to make me more observant of them. Mouths are very varied and difficult to get the curvature of them right.
Phenomenal sketches Matthew. Love the older lady, so much detail. As usual, thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Thank you very much
👏
Thanks Multichrons
So great talent ✍🏼
Thanks for following all my videos Fabrizio
Another great upload, really enjoy the way you talk us through your half-hour sketches. Do you get frustrated if you go over your half hour time?
I'm trying not to go over by too many minutes...to make each challenge a similar time...otherwise it's difficult to compare like with like to see any improvement etc.
Well done! I can get so little done in 30 minutes. I gotta try doing some faster practice.
I can really recommend these challenges...I used to be very slow, but after doing years of life drawing where warm up poses can be very short indeed I've sped up no end. I'm hoping these timed challenges will push me to the next level again with speed and accuracy. Let me know how you get on!
Beautiful 🖌️
Thanks Fabrizio
Such a great likeness, well done Matthew 👏
Let's hope they get better through the week of the challenge!? But not going to beat myself up if they don't.
I like this challenge. I'll try to watch everyday Matthew. Greetings Ron.
Thanks Ron. If this one goes well I might try a longer challenge next month. It's sometimes difficult to shoehorn art challenges into a busy life but the challenge helps you to prioritise it! Still watching your videos when you launch them, and thanks for featuring me a couple of times in the past.
So beautiful art🖌️💙✍🏼
Thanks so much Fabrizio... I'm learning all the time by practicing as much as I can...Practice makes Perfect so the saying goes. I hope it turns out to be true in my case! Are you an artist yourself?
Oh no I am just only a passionate lover of the arts and i follow your awesome artworks with interest and pleasure 💙🖌️
I love this!!! It honestly blows me away. Reminds me of the ducks in my bathroom which I still have ❤ miss you! x
Thanks Claire. Glad you still have the ducks...it'll be worth a fortune someday! Lol x
Absolute love this, Matthew, very calming scene. Love the way you talk us through how you created this piece of art. Well Done 👏
Thank you as ever.
Love this piece. Simple concept but beautifully presented
Thanks Dawn! I've not done loads of art so far on my 'art' holiday, but there is still time! Lol and if I don't anyway then I don't!
This has to be one of my favourite still life you've done of late. Very realistic, well done 👏
Thanks:) I'm currently painting a new still life of a tiny last of the season rose in a tiny vase. Not sure how well it's going so far, but will have to wait and see
I really like the painting, Matthew. You are a very talented artist 🎨
Thanks...some more videos coming over the next week or two, hopefully with slightly better results, but useful to see the good and the not so good for people I think.
@@MatthewAlltonArt Look forward to watching the videos.
Thank you for sharing your new sketches. I must admit I'm not a lover of feet, but well sketched. Look forward to seeing more sketches soon.
Me either, but you have to draw em if you are doing life drawing...most people have em after all!
Thank you for sharing, Matthew. Great sketch.
Thanks as ever...there is an oil painting still life video on the way this week...keep watching! :)
Well done 👏🏽👏🏽 3:14
Thanks very much:) do you do life drawing yourself?
@@MatthewAlltonArt yeah I drawing for myself 😊
Well done on your card sales, Matthew. As you say, hopefully, the next exhibition will be bigger sales 🤞
Ypu win some ypu lose some but it's all good experience!
Love the final painting, Matthew. It is very realistic and looks delicious 😋
Juicy black cherries...one of my favourite summer fruits...I had blue fingers from removing the stones when I ate them after taking the reference photo!
👏
Thank-you I'm pleased with the end result which is a rarity! But becoming a more common occurrence at least!
Thank you for sharing your process with us!
It's a process to be worked on and fine tuned as I'm not sure I have a process for painting portraits in oils yet...but with practice I'm hoping to develop one! Thanks for your support as ever!
Great work, Matthew. Now, onto your next experiment . What will that be ???
I dread to think what future challenges might be! Lol
Well done! Very lovely piece to loot at ;) . Maybe Cubism is your thing :P
Thanks...I dont think I'd go that far! But it was enjoyable enough. Look forward to seeing your piece for the challenge!
Nice to see you experimenting with success
Every piece is an experiment of some description lately...constantly trying new materials, techniques, subjects. Keeps it interesting
