Visit to a Mangrove (4d): An Oriental Pied Hornbill Couple from Singapore
This pair of Oriental Pied Hornbill was documented at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. In this short video, both male and female hornbill are observed to tilt their heads slowy. Interestingly, the female tilted her head and appears to be upside down. These movements are suggestive of a courtship dance by both the male and female. To hear the calls of this Oriental Pied Hornbill, watch the ending of the Visit to a Mangrove (4), where the calls of the male can be heard in the background of the clip showing the Buffy Fish Owl.

Visit to a Mangrove (4c): Buffy Fish Owl Hyperventilating in the Tropical Heat
มุมมอง 8528 วันที่ผ่านมา
This video was taken in the late morning at the carpark, where the Buffy Fish Owl was high up in the trees, with many preschool kids having a snack break (directly behind where this video was taken). The purpose of the sound spectrogram here serves to inform about human noise pollution in our nature reserves, in this particular case, voices from preschool kids and teachers. The owl seems undist...
Visit to a Mangrove (4a): (Sounds of) Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
มุมมอง 92หลายเดือนก่อน
A short video of my visit to Singapore's most famous mangrove (17th May 2024), with an emphasis on animal sounds. In this video, you will hear the cacophony of cicada singing, two ashy tailorbirds vocalizing (in gradual slow motion), a plantain squirrel vocalizing, a Buffy Fish Owl 'disturbed' by the nearby calls of the critically endangered Oriental Pied Hornbill. Do also look out for (links t...

Foraging Behaviour of Flameback Woodpeckers

This video first shows a female Flameback Woodpecker using its tongue to lick something from an unidentified insect on a branch (maybe licking honeydew from mealybugs?). The clip then transits to the pair, scavenging through Dragon Scale Fern on a different tree. Though the video did not show any successful capture of any insects or arthropods, I believe they are probably looking for small inve...
Sunda Scops Owls in urban Singapore (with sound spectrogram)
มุมมอง 590หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a series of videos taken on the 7th May 2024, between 3:10-5pm, from two locations (about 20m or more from the nest). As this particular nest of the Sunda Scops Owl is so near to the traffic, I took the opportunity to document how the pair of owl nestlings would react to anthropogenic noise pollution (passing buses, trucks, cars, and humans talking), hence most of the video clips select...

A short video of this evening's thunderstorm in Singapore (21st Apr 2024). The video is slowed down 5x to allow viewers to appreciate the behaviour of the lightning strikes. Tongue-flicking Behaviour of an Asian Water Monitor

Many reptiles are known to use their forked tongue to 'taste' their environment in search of prey. This video is a slowed-down (5x) clip of one Asian Water Monitor walking and flicking its forked tongue. Notice how the tips stretch wide open just before touching the ground? This stereo tasting of the ground will allow the monitor to tell if a particular chemical cue is coming from left or right...

      about 20m or more from the nest? Initially I was near a stairway beside the path; later i moved to a road divider; a raised embarkment about 2m wide so as to capture the sounds of traffic from both directions (but have to be extra careful with the traffic). Stopped filming at 5pm to avoid the evening traffic.

    Fantastic! I love such high quality videos! I'm a stormchaser, but I don't have the necessary equipment, nor such thunderstorms here in Europe. Did you use any manual shutter speed, aperture or ISO during this recording?

    • @matlim
      @matlim ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the settings were all manual....I have to check on the raw video footage though as I can't recall the settings. IMO the two key factors are: the video settings (120fps 1080p) which allows me to see the movements of the lightning, and the Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8 S. The lens is superb for astro-photos, hence it works well for thunderstorms on dark days, and I could keep the ISO low. I am not really an expert in videoing thunderstorms, but I think the Z6II and the z 20mm lens just happens to be a good combi for such videos. Hope this helps!

    • @matlim
      @matlim 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the parent birds did try to do something (second half of video), flying swiftly and trying to peck at the snake (which is also very risky) but failed. But whether the parents could have prevented the snake from going into the nest prior to the swallowing, that I am not sure cos I was distracted by other animal during that crucial 1min

    So, so sad a baby woodpeker chick hunting so so so sad

    • @matlim
      @matlim 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't worry. This is how nature works. Sometimes the birds lose (in this case). I am sure there are plenty of cases out there where the parent birds would have successfully chased the predator snake away by swiping or pecking on them. The only interesting thing is, this snake is not a native, so from an ecological perspective, perhaps the birds are not familiar with how to handle this snake that they have never met or have rarely met in their lifetime

    If crocodiles can do the death roll then constrictors can do deaths embrace.

    • @matlim
      @matlim 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess constrictors have evolved this technique to kill their prey asap (by restricting blood from reaching the brain, ensuring rapid organ failure). Any longer and the snake risks exposing itself to more harm (pecking by parent birds or even birds that prey on snakes)

    • @matlim
      @matlim 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was there to document the bird actually, and it's vocals. But the snake's presence caught me completely by surprise. Surely it looks sad but yup, this is nature. What is probably interesting is, how did the snake even knew where the nest was? Did the presence of the parents, by their vocalizations, or smell of the nestling, gave their hideout away? The nest is very hard to spot, diameter is probably an inch and a half.
