Documenting my various car builds for no other reason than I wanted to make videos and share it with the internet. Drift cars are my main passion, with rotary engines.

Have you thought of piping the air filter out into the bumper, like the Skuzzle intake? It's pretty exposed to water there (I've got mine in a K&N sock) but it's as cool as you can get and keeps the front of the bay open for airflow too
I did think about that, but I didn't want the water risk. I do drift days at Santa Pod in the winter, and they have really big puddles to deal with. Once I've built an air box for it, I won't have any heat issues with the hole I printed for the bumper
the rx8 electronics are an absolute nightmare, im surprised you went this way, standalone is the best way. you've done a great job though mate well done :)
So I've learned! Standalone is 100% what I recommend to anyone who wants to do this swap, and will be where I end up. The idea here was to do it easy, and it is possible, just not the best way.
Is that it, bloody hell it was amazing years ago
Unfortunately, yes. My Facebook memories have been showing me how good it used to be with at least 3 times as many cars.
Me who owns a Rx-8 i am impressed with what you have done i would have never tried that good on you 😊😊 keep it up .
I didn’t attend this year so have been watching other peoples feedback. As I only usually attend Brisca F1 Stock Car meetings, I was impressed Nicole knew who Frankie Wainman (and family) were and she understood the roof colour (aerofoil) system. 👍. Brisca F1’s are thriving at the moment so if you haven’t been to see them in their natural world, try and get to a meeting. The fixtures are on the BSCDA website. Kings Lynn is a good first time place to visit as you can go into the pits during the meeting, its on shale surface and it’s FAST!! I travel from Devon to go there, its so good. Skegness is also an alternative, its a tarmac race surface and there’s always lots of action.
She grew up going to the events with her dad and his friend, so she's a big fan. Without doxxing myself, we have a track literally 5 minutes down the road from where we live and hear them occasionally. She wants to go, so we'll be going at some point. It'll be interesting for me as I've only ever seen drift cars on ovals
@@RubyMotorsport Good to hear. I hope it is the Brisca F1 version you hear as there are other forms out there and nothing else comes close.
Yep, Brisca is what we were lookign at going to
I remember when the show used to have manufactures there, tyre manufacturers and Demon Tewkes etc but now there's none of that there now!
It's been popping up on my Facebook memories this week. The show used to be so big I'd easily miss huge sections of it, but you could see it all in an hour or 2 now
looks empty of cars compared to previous years
It was. There were large sections that had nothing in it
Brisca F1 is awesome, the live action arena does not do them any justice
100%. I wanted to leave the sound in and more of us looking at the cars, but Crofty was on the live stage so you couldn't hear us and the live action cars just blew out the mics lol
I went on Thursday, £37 was a disgrace for such a poor show, I would never return in current format, shame as it used to be amazing pre-Covid
Yeah, I agree. Other shows are cheaper with more cars. It's been on a downward slope since COVID. I don't know how they get it back, but they need to do something.
Great video. I was there today. I agree is was a smaller show. The 1130 show had empty seats but there was still alot of people watching. I had a good central seat but without screens I wonder what the experience was like. The F1 car line up was my highlight. There are too many simulators, art stands, clothing and food. Karting has dried up. Im nit sure if i will go again.
It's always had the art and clothing stands, but it's always been diluted by the number of cars that were there. With there barely being any cars, it was really noticeable. The Live Action arena suffered without the screens, and there was less of it this year as well. I don't know how much longer it'll be around to go to, I had a better time at the Classic Motor Show.
Them Woodford trailers are really good I’ve got the older version of that one and it’s mega
They look nice! Mine is a good trailer to be fair, but an upgrade wouldn't hurt lol
I imagine because the NC was "made from" the RX8 chassis, this should feel like how an Rx8 would if it didnt have the extra weight. better balance power to weight? I could be wrong. Anyways really cool swap. Ive only ever thought of doing a renesis swap on an fb if my rx8 were to get wrecked. part of the reason i got an rx8 was the cluster. Center tach with he red/blue so good🤣🤣
It's similar. You can feel the loss of weight in comparison but it's a shorter chassis so it's not directly a lighter RX8
I'm amazed this both wasnt considered as the stock engine nor is a common swap at all, its a tiny engine that embodies fun in a tiny car that embodies fun. Its a perfect combo.
This absolutely could have been a factory option. A lot of the wiring is the same, suspension is all the same and the front sub frame bolts straight in. People are just scared of rotary engines
Currently 2.5 swapping my nc.. I did think about doing a rotary though
I thought about the 2.5, but I love rotary engines
Can you run the versatune on this rx8 ecu so you can turn on the fan earlier and cool it down? Oem rx8 fans don’t turn on till 200+f and not full blast till 230F or something crazy like that. I have modified my fans to turn on full blast by 204F and I haven’t had any temp rises over 205F since. Are you running the rx8 oil coolers as well?
Yeah, single cooler as it was on the JDM car. Good point on the versa tune, my friend has access to the software so I could ask him if he can do that for me
@ the oil cooler thermostat also doesn’t open till 230F. I have bought the thermostat that opens around 180F from rotaryperformance. I still haven’t installed it since the fan mod was so effective, but I do plan on doing it before next summer where we get 110-115F sometimes where we are in California
I had been running into the same issuee with the factory ECU. Used my ECU Master EMU Black after we spoke on Instagram. Really appreciate the help! Glad to see some videos made on it!
I'm going to run my FC on a Haltech, so I'll end up wiring this for that as well. More videos will be coming on this as I work on it.
We were doing so well and then ..... "half bridge port"...... But seriously great video , more NC's need rotaries!
In my defence, I was sold the car as a street port. I'd have done the full bridge if it was my choice
@@RubyMotorsport Why?
@@RubyMotorsport well in that case, I suppose you came out ahead! 😆
Definitely! I have more plans for this later down the line, but I need to get the FC going first!
Misfire at high rpm could be plugs/leads/coils. Definately check the coils (multimeter, or swap around front/rear coils/leads & see if the misfire moves to the other rotor housing), and the leads are seated properly both ends + youve got the leading and trailing coils & leads on the corresponding leading & trailing sparkplugs at each housing, I'd fit new plugs if theyve not been changed already, rx8 can be fussy over ignition system parts, worth double checking the ignition wiring & connectors too as the engine has been in/out/into a different car. Otherwise possibly a water seal issue allowing coolant into the combustion chamber at high rpm/load & causing a misfire.😢
Leads and plugs are next on my list to check. It's still running stock coils and I have no idea how old they are, so throwing upgraded ones on won't hurt. I'll look at the leads, they're after market so might benefit from a good clean. I doubt it'll be water seals, the engine is only 2000 miles or so old and when the issue goes away, it pulls well. It won't hurt to comp test it though.
Doesn't the NC MX5 already have a RX8 gearbox?
The MX5 was a 5 speed and the RX8 was a 6 speed, so I took the 6 speed box. There are definitely differences as the tail shafts on the end were different, at least between the 5 speed MX5 and 6 speed RX8
Having a quick Google, the ratios are different in the MX5 6 speed and the RX8 6 speed as well. Most likely to accommodate the different rev limit and torque levels
Awesome vid, really interesting to see your build and hear how you've done it! I would love to do this swap into an NA/NB one day. Looking forward to seeing a pull!
There's a few people that have done this in a NA and NB. There's going to be more content of this in the new year as I work on refining it and working out what the misfire issue is.
cant wait to drive this once its 100%
You and everyone who helped me with it will be getting a go <3
Not hating but isn’t the rx8 the worst rotary ever made
Depends what your definition of "worst" is. This is an "easy" engine swap. Using most of the RX8 to do it with. I could have done it with an REW and made silly horsepower but that wasn't what this build was about.
Worst rotary so far... eh? 😅
Not really, it's the result of many years of rotary r&d by Mazda, the older 12a & 13b were no more reliable and produced less power, the 13b REW was the same but had higher power only because it used twin turbos. The 13b-MSP is a tuned high compression NA engine, which makes decent power and mpg and emissions are much better, although it doesn't easily lend itself to forced induction, unlike the 13b REW. So I wouldn't say "worst" rotary, it is what it is, and if it's serviced & maintained properly it's as reliable as any other rotary, unfortunately mass producing it and expecting joe public to religiously follow the service & maintenance didn't really go to plan... But hey, at least there's plenty of cheap rx8's & engines out there to use for a project.
That's a good point. The 13b REW I have in the FC made 200bhp with a turbo and the renesis makes 231bhp naturally aspirated.
@jamesowen418 my 2009 RX8 has 132k miles originally engine from the factory. It's still going has low compression by Mazda standards but still runs, drives and idles. Gotta love the RX8 for what it is. Modern day FC with high reving engine and good gearing and great and balanced chassis.
Been wanting to do this for a while now
I'd love to see it when it's done!
I’ll be embarking on this swap shortly so useful info in there , cheers 👍
Amazing, feel free to ask questions if you need anything
feedback for the next videos: your voice is super quiet, so it might be worth looking into your audio mixing on a couple of different devices to make sure the editing software has done the job correctly before you upload :)
I had the same issue with the last RX7 video. It was something on the editing side, I need to check the settings for the next one
i saw the clip then heard it was me
I don't even remember when this was but it was worth sharing again
So envious at how easy some of those nuts and bolts came undone… I’ve worked on cars 20 years younger that are worse than that 😂 Great work Matt, keep it up!
I have no idea how I got lucky outside of the previous owner using loads of copper grease!
Apologies for the poor sound quality on this one. I didn't have the recording set to use the external mics, so sound was only recorded via my phone. Which makes the quality it did capture really impressive.
I don't understand a thing about building cars but I loved watching you do this! 😊 Well explained and great editing, especially for your first one! :)
Thank you! <3
Enjoyed this, good vibes all through the video. How long did everything in this video take you?
Thanks! Honestly, I don't know. I definitely spent more time editing than I did actually working on the car though
cant wait to hear this doing skids, after learning all on the NC
@@mx5milton going to be a while before I get to do skids in it. I'm doing this one properly ❤️
Certainly Shifts! but don't think I could stand that SC whine :( did a a day in a SC VX220 once, hated the whine ever since,) a good pair of earplugs should sort though :)
MaxxUK I love the noise! That's why I went SC over turbo!
Nice what mods/parts do you have?
Mostly just styling stuff. But I run a welded diff. Few breather mods, depowered rack and 4mm rack spacers.
anything suspension wise?
also how long have you had the welded diff?
A good 2 and a half years now.
