Hammock Camping the JMT | NOBO - Day 9 | Selden Pass to VVR
This video describes Day 9 of my thru hike of the John Muir Trail. I will be headed northbound on the JMT and attempting to use a hammock for my shelter every night on the trail.
Day 9 turned out to be a bit tougher than I thought. I easily hiked over Selden Pass. I did most of the tough hiking the day before and only had 2 miles left with about 900 ft. of elevation gain, so that is about as easy as they get on the JMT. And then I cruised all the way down to Bear Creek, pretty easy morning.
Then I started to climb Silver Pass, I think I hiked around 2 miles up the pass, but it had around 1k ft. elevation gain over a mile, so it was definitely a significant climb. Then I came to the Bear Creek Trailhead junction where I would hike into VVR (Vermillion Valley Resort). I decided this instead of the ferry for a couple of reasons. I would still have to hike 6 miles to get to the ferry and then I would have to wait a couple of hours until the ferry arrived. Instead, I decided to hike 7 miles down Bear Creek Trail and get into VVR around 2 pm, where I could immediately begin to rest in my motel room.
I did splurge on a hotel room, but I thought it was worth it. I loved having my own private shower and toilet but more importantly a soft bed where I could just lay down and rest for that day and the next. There are public showers where you can pay to use them, and they do have public bathrooms too. For me, I was treating this like a town day and just wanted a break from the routine of sleeping in my hammock.
VVR is awesome and has all the amenities that a backpacker would need to resupply or replenish for the trail. I will go over all the amenities in my next video where I stayed there most of the day.
Thanks for watching!

    First comment! I love seeing your new videos released! Why did you choose to not use MTR as a full resupply?

    • @crimsonblaze_backpacker
      @crimsonblaze_backpacker 22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hey! I had considered it, and at first, I was going to resupply at MTR, but then a spot became available to stay at the motel at VVR. So, I figured to go ahead and resupply there. Plus, if I remember correctly, it was more than twice the cost ($90 to $40) to send a resupply box to MTR, and they had stricter requirements for what it had to be stored in, which would have made the shipping even more expense, because it is a more remote location than VVR. I figured it was only an extra day of food, and I didn't want to get off the trail if I didn't have to because of time constraints, so I decided to push onward to VVR. I will admit that my food plan was probably not ideal and may not work for most. I've carried 8 days' worth of food on the Colorado Trail, so I knew that I could do it here. Plus, I really leveraged the bear boxes, so I didn't have to carry a huge bear canister. I had the small one which I can put about 4 days' worth of food in, and then used a storage bag for the other four days, since my first four campsites all had bear boxes. This limited where I could camp those first four days, but it all worked out great in my opinion.

    • @crimsonblaze_backpacker

      It is about mile a north of the northern most part of Evolution Lake. When hiking, I thought it was two different lakes. But looking at the map more closely, Evolution Lake is just a long lake running north to south. The campsite was at around 10,700 ft. Now I will say, there were trees for hanging a hammock at the northern and southern part of Evolution Lake. I would have stopped there but it was just too windy, so I decided to hike another mile.

      This Palisades area is beautiful, one of my favorites. And Palisade creek area I camped at was perfect for hanging a hammock. However, there are two Palisades lakes 2 miles south of where I camped. I didn't find any good trees at the northern Palisade Lake but the southern Palisade lake did have one small area with good trees but it was already taken. I probably would have stopped there if there were any available spots because this area is gorgeous.

    I'm looking forward to following your journey! Hammock camping the JMT is absolutely at the top of my backpacking "bucket list". Do you have a lighterpack that summarizes your gear? Do you have a list of areas where you were able to hammock camp? I'm looking forward to seeing how your stove performs. I recently upgraded to MSR PRD, and believe its fuel efficiency outweighs the increased stove weight.

    • @crimsonblaze_backpacker
      @crimsonblaze_backpacker 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey! My plan is to create a video guide for hammock camping the JMT. It will show you where I camped as well as other places where you could hang a hammock so you don't have to follow my schedule. As for the stove, I love my BRS. I only boil around a cup of water for my meals, I don't cook meals in my pot over a stove. So, fuel efficiency isn't as important to me. In fact, I used one small propane canister for my entire JMT thru-hike, and still had fuel left over. Unfortunately, my gear videos are all for trips that are either long trips where I use my larger backpack or when I used my tent for a trip in Utah. I'll put that on the list to create a video of my lightest weight setup. Thanks for watching!

    i'm going to have to try the support under the knee thing because the pressure from doing the foot slide thing makes my inside leg fall asleep :v

      Best thing I've done to improve my sleep in a hammock. Even with a flat lay, I sleep better with my clothes bag under my knees. Thanks for watching!

    Here in Florida I stared out in the late 50's with my dad's old army bag and a U.S. Army Jungle hammock. As a kid packing was simple , toss everything in the bag and go. Later in life I pack about the same as you but here in Florida. I forget the under quilt and use a self inflating Therm-a-rest mummy style ( full length ) pad. In the hammock it is 1/2 to 3/4 inflated so it conforms to my body and the hammock. One thing always done , the rain fly is in snake skins and in the front pocket of the pack. Simple reason , 1st thing out and hung and then the last thing taken down and packed. That never changes , the same way every time , sun shade or rain protection for everything depending on the weather.

    You've given me some great info in the past, and I'm stoked to start this same trip next week (except we will start at the tram). Do you mind sharing the pin drop for the North Fork camping zone. If your friend would rather you not, no worries. I've heard the best sites are on the upper end of the zone, curious as to your thoughts.

      Hey! The coordinates are 43.7800634, -110.8272491. This site is identified on the Hiking Project app I use. And it's one of the first campsites in this zone. So, I don't know what the campsites are like at the upper end of the zone but I can't imagine it was better than this.

    What was the road like on the way in? Last year it looked rough and this year I’m driving with a low clearance car. Do you think it’s accessible?

    • @crimsonblaze_backpacker
      @crimsonblaze_backpacker หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! Yes, it would be accessible for a low clearance car. I saw plenty of them in the campground. The road will be no problem. It's really the last tenth of a mile when you turn down into the campground. Very, very bumpy but doable for any car.

      Do you mean my zpacks clothes bag? Yes, I believe it is a medium long. Not sure Zpacks makes that exact size anymore, but they will have something similar.

    My hips can't handle sleeping on the ground too well. I can for sure but boy do I feel it next day, hammock definitely isn't perfect but I don't wake up in pain so that's always a plus, being out in the north Appalachians definitely helps, have no shortage of trees out here
