Surely everyone loves a brutal race 😂😂
Thanks for the info. I’m doing the 70.3 Wilmington this year and it will be my first ever tri!
I wanted to email you, but your email bounced. Could you update your email address?
What year did you do Waco
We completed this race in 2021!
Lisbon - picture 3 adult women, 2 small children hauling allll the luggage, car seats etc with the exception of your bikes & tri backpacks from airbnb down cobblestone sidewalks to train station to airport while y'all were finishing the race - it was quite a sight! Backing in to the Nottingham airbnb tight driveway with the partially bricked pavement. Also, the 4 hour drive from Nottingham to London with the women, children & travel wifi - the stick shift/left side of the road in heavy traffic leading and you guys trying to follow behind in the van with the bikes and no gps :) plus, the emergency roadside stop for the "fountain" 🙂
The color and sound is great on this one. You two make me smile. Maybe for newbies in the tri race world, repetition (FOUR loops) was comforting
Give you two a world record in perseverance!!
Thank you for this. Watched this as a recon since I’m doing Vendee this year.
Good job fellas!!
Hey! Thanks for the “shoutout”
It was fun to relive this day from your experiences. So amazed that you finished well this world record goal. Love hearing, too, your compassion for others. Your parents must have instilled in you great character.
I'm surprised that a network hasn't offered Y'all a weekly show yet!
This is one of my favorites🤩
Hi guys, allowing for the extra time on the dock waiting to start swimming but already having passed the timing mat. How much quicker would this typically be compared to a regular 70.3 course / or your average swim time on a regular 70.3 swim? Thx
Thanks for the review!!! Lots of great information here and I love the conversational aspect of it. Easy to sit back and watch. Doing the Olympic as my first triathlon in two days. Trying to prepare for the 70.3 Ironman in Geneva, NY in two weeks!! I’m really nervous because of the hills on the bike. If I can’t make it up the hill, I’m a bit nervous I’ll just fall over on the bike since I’m clipped in and have a hard time unclipping. I’m also really panicky about open water swimming. I can do it when I’ve got people around (especially when they’re swimming with me), but when I’m just by myself I get scared and can’t will myself to do the distance. I’ve done the distance once in open water and many times in the pool, just need to get past the mental barrier!
So how did it go?!
How do you navigate the bike course? Do you have to have the course file loaded onto a bike computer or are there cones all along the way?
I have done sprint race many times. Cannot beat the organization by Sean Ryan!!!
Thank you!!! Looking to race this course next year.
So I have to do an Ironman to qualify for Ironman 🤔
Great video. Amazing determination. Well done!!
Glad you guys pointed out the EXTRA 0.75 miles each way on the bike I thought I was losing my mind! And that soft sand finish is a trademark of race director Steve delmo, his local races are 100% on the soft stuff!…going back this weekend to try and redeem myself, good news, it’ll be high tide!
Casual IM dudes review races..
Would you recommend this race for a beginner
Yes that's Sam's favorite in the US! It's great having a downriver swim!
Do you know if the downtown hills are in the 2022 course?
Great review. Yes that muck mud was “thoroughly disgusting”. I cut my foot on the bottom of the bay….. One month prior, I did the Tri-AC Olympic Tri, in that bay, and the swim course was fine……. I liked AC 70.3, but I will not do it again because of that swim in that nasty bay
Thank you! Doing this race in a few weeks! Kinda nervous about the swim though. How far apart are the bouys? Is it half mile out, turn, half back?
You will be fine! Almost everyone gets anxious before the swim! Just swim slower than you think you should for the first 500 yards. After that, you'll be settled in and know what your pace for the rest of the swim should be. Last year, the course was a horseshoe /U-like course - out, over and back. Standard Ironman buoy setup - 7 or 8 yellow buoys, 7 or 8 orange, and the 2 red turn buoys. Yellow is first half of course, orange is 2nd half of course. Very spectator friendly, as you are swimming around the pier where spectators can stand. Almost always wetsuit legal (highly recommend a wetsuit). It's a rolling start, so you're only entering the water with a few other people at the same time. Have fun & let us know how it goes!
@@ironfam2678 this race was AWESOME! huge, huge storm came in Friday, crazy 20-25 mph sustained winds plus much higher gusts. 5-7 foot swells. Rip tide warnings went out that evening through Saturday evening, combined with the crazy swells (not quite as high on Saturday but still pretty rough). The county double red flagged it and wouldn't let the swim happen. So it turned into a time trial bike start. I PRd with 3:05 for the bike! Run was fun. I really really loved this race, even though we didn't get to swim. I did hear of a couple bike crashes with cars though. They were both in town; one guy crashed because a guy pulling an ATV trailer hesitated then pulled right out in front of him😡. But for the most part the vehicular traffic was patient and accommodating. Definitely a fun day!
doing this next month! thanks for sharing!
That's awesome! Have fun & let us know how it goes!
Thanks for this! Hey I was the older woman who hung out with you (Sam) and Matt from the UK on the second lap of the Haines City race in December, you guys kept me going!
Well this is my first race and I was excited to sign up and be a part of it. Up until I’ve seen this video. Man I’m bummed out big time. May have bitten off more that I can chew. Lol. $hit
It's a tough race but if we can do it, you can too! Pace yourself on the big climb and enjoy the view when you get to the top!
@@ironfam2678 what was your time on the bike if don’t mind me asking?
@@Doc-Tee Hi, so sorry, just seeing this. Our times were 3:18 and 3:38 on the bike.
Great recon will be heading there firs time may 22
Hey! I'm planning to go this year, any recommendations for stays everything seems already booked.
I would recommend checking out the facebook group for the race! There's usually a ton of people who have recommendations for accommodation!
This is a great recap video! You mentioned this race was part of a "challenge"....what challenge? Like 10 races in the season, challenge? What other races did you do last year for your challenge?
We've actually done over 30 races since March! I just haven't had the time to put up all of the videos yet!
My wife and I just signed up for 2022...we're super stoked. I did the Blue Ridge Marathon in 2018 and have my belt buckle. Thanks for all of the help tips and tricks!
Have fun and please let us know how it went!
I appreciate you guys taking the time to make this video. This race is on my short list for 2022 and your comments raised some questions in my mind. (1) were there peelers after your swim? (2) what size were your cranks, ie. compact vrs standard? (3) what size was your cassette, ie. 11-32? (4) did you train specifically for the mountains? (5) did you have fun? Thanx again and happy trails.
1. Due to COVID, we haven’t had wetsuit peelers at any Ironman brand races. We’ve had some at local races. This could certainly change in the future though. 2. We used our stock 52/36 crank 3. we changed our cassette from 11/28 to 11/32 specifically for this race 4. We had a race in Belgium scheduled for this weekend but it was canceled. Blue Ridge was a last minute replacement and we actually had no idea of the big climb when we signed up. We didn’t do any specific mountain training but we did do a race in Austria the previous week which was through the Alps. If you get a chance to practice this course, it would be very beneficial. 5. This is a very tough race. The bike is brutal and the run for us was hot. The swim was a standard lake swim but your day starts extra early because you have to take a shuttle to the start. If you know all of that going in and you train for it, you can have a fun day. Make sure you take time to admire the views from your bike when you are on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The city of Roanoke was very excited to host the race.
@@ironfam2678 Thanx for reply and useful information. I would rather train for it in Austria or San Sebastian, Spain, which is really near the Pyrenees. I live about an hour from Roanoke so training on the Blue Ridge is very doable for me. BTW, I enjoy your channel.
Fun video and thanks for the course review. What’s the goal for you two? World record for doing the most 70.3 race?
Yes that's the goal! We've already met that goal but are going to see how many races we can get in this year!
Are those railroad tracks active? Meaning could you be stopped if a train comes through...and were people stopped?
Have you done a review of the Challenge Daytona race? Hoping to do it for the first time this December.
Sam did that race in 2020, but we have not reviewed it. If you have questions about it let us know and we'll get you a response from Sam.
@@ironfam2678 thanks. Would be curious if there’s anything quirky or odd about the event or course to be aware of.
😄❤️❤️😄
Getting nervous gents - missed your video last week - hope nothing went wrong.
No worries we are doing good! Just late getting things up, but look out for a few coming out soon!
I had to defer to next year. A few ??? Tri or road bike? What's your cassette setup? I rode this course on Rouvy several times prior to deferring and found that I couldn't stay in the saddle on some of the steeper hills with an 11-28 setup on my tri bike. Were you able to stay seated on the long climb?
Hey, thanks for all of these questions we use a tri bike and we changed from an 11-28 cassette to an 11-32 cassette specifically for this race. Billy was able to say seated riding the 32 and Sam did stand up a fair amount with the 32. One thing forgot to mention in the videos is that neither of us used bike gloves, but we would if we did that ride again because your hands get really sweaty and slippery on the handle bars.
Same question I have . Tough call in my head
Kudos, Guys! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
Can you add a little chat about your selves on the channel about ? What about the gear you use ? What made you start this race series ?
That's a great idea we will work on that for a future video!
@@ironfam2678 no pressure - just would be helpful - keep up the good work - you peeps are beasts.
Doing the full in September and this is the granular info that really helps. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful best of luck!!
Thank you all! good review, I agree with most everything you said. I’ll be back to Chattanooga! Just turn on the A/C next time 😁
We're hoping to be back there again too! Maybe we'll see you there!
Y’all sure look tanned and relaxed for long distance participants!
Well done guys!
Good job, evaluating the race guys!! Looking forward to more of these wrap ups. ☺️
WootWoot!! Excellent description of “how to qualify”🙌🏼
Thank you!
Great job with the editing, Sydney!
Thanks for sharing! Sounds like everyone was pleased with the CrozierPlanned Half Ironman training race. 👏🏻👌🏼
