Meditation on 'Amazing Grace' (Composed and played by Andrei Hadap) (Hunter Baillie Presbyterian)
Andrei Hadap plays his own composition, "Meditation on 'Amazing Grace'" on the 1890 Hill & Son organ of Hunter Baillie Memorial Presbyterian Church, Annandale.
Andrei is a pianist, composer, scholar, and teacher based in Sydney. He completed his Bachelor of Music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he received First-Class Honours and several academic awards, studying under Stephanie McCallum and Erin Helyard.
As a pianist, Andrei made his orchestral debut, performing Brahms' First Piano Concerto with the Penrith Symphony Orchestra in 2018 under the baton of conductor Sadaharu Maramatsu. He was the inaugural Continuo Fellow for Pinchgut Opera from 2021 to 2023, performing regularly with the Orchestra of the Antipodes including appearances at the 2022 Fourwinds Festival and Pinchgut's concert series, 'Women of the Pieta.' He has also appeared as part of a series of concerts in the Orpheus Institute for the 2023 Summer Academy in Ghent, Belgium, performing Mozart's sonatas on the clavichord and fortepiano. Late 2023, he performed Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto with the Penrith Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Paul Terracini.
Andrei is also an emerging scholar with many research interests such as historical performance and pedagogy of the common practice period. He is currently a PhD candidate at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he has been awarded a research grant for his thesis based on a pedagogical overview of the training of pianist-composers in the nineteenth century and its several applications. He shares his knowledge and passion as a piano and composition teacher, basing his pedagogy on these historical methods.
Andrei has recently expanded his musical interests to include the organ, for which he has already composed a number of works. He is currently Organ Scholar at St Stephen's Uniting Church, Macquarie Street, Sydney.
As a multi-skilled musician, Andrei aims to push the boundaries of musical versatility. He is driven to blend these disciplines in his work to navigate the rapidly evolving musical landscape of today.

    shame the tuning of the organ needs attention

    • @sydneyorgans3250
      @sydneyorgans3250 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Parker6432 A case could be made for saying that the tuning of almost every organ in Sydney that wasn't tuned within the last week needs attention at present. The weather conditions are not at all helpful. We have found instances of very obvious problems that have occurred within a few days of a thorough tuning. Most of the organs we record are well maintained, but we obviously can't ask churches to incur an additional fee for a special tuning visit just because we plan to record. As a number of churches simply fail to respond to our requests for recording permission and others refuse to allow us to record, we are immensely grateful to the churches that allow us access, and in particular to those that positively encourage us to bring along people to play the organ. We are not going to be put off by tuning issues: that isn't what it's about.

    Beautiful! Thank you, Dickson! I first learned and played this work in the mid 1970's while I was organist at St Augustine's Anglican Church, Merewether. My score still contains registration markings for that instrument. That particular organ had a limited stop list and poor projection into the church, but this work needed the sounds which that organ actually did have. The composition fitted that instrument like a glove and was one of the few pieces I could play on it which actually sounded good. The composer takes the player and listener on a lovely excursion through the quieter stops, and you gave us a good variety there along the way. Very restful!

    • @nightowldickson
      @nightowldickson 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The section played on the Great was a bit louder than I had originally hoped for, it was the Open Diapason No.1 stop, in retrospect perhaps I would have searched for something else. But overall I think it sounded ok, a bit more reverb from the building would've also been helpful.

    • @andrewgrahame6000
      @andrewgrahame6000 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@nightowldickson Actually it worked very well, Dickson. The middle section is intended to be much stronger than the opening and closing sections, and that big No 1 Open was ideal in context with the style. I think it was the correct choice. The only registration change I’d go for would be a quieter ending, perhaps on Swell string celeste stops, maybe first with the octave coupler, then without, and finally closing the swell box as you did for a whisper quiet ending.

      Andrew - I feel your pain, I was organist at Merewether in the early 2000s and I'm infamous as the organist who "removed" the instrument, although it certainly sounds better in the Newcastle Museum. I did have funding in place for a renovation, judicious addition of stops and a better swell pedal but we were warned off by the heritage people. Can't say I didn't try.

      @ Hi Peter, I sought to get something done with the organ in the mid 1970’s but was viciously opposed by the Parish Council, who disliked hearing the truth about the cut-price rebuild they had authorised just a decade earlier. I left there at the end of 1976 having been effectively bullied out by the priest and parish council. I congratulate you on your amazing success at getting that instrument removed to another location and for getting a far better instrument installed at the church. This was a hugely positive outcome for the church and ultimately for that organ. You did well, and should be recognised in a positive fashion for your efforts. That pipe organ was the wrong instrument for that building from Day 1 and should never have been put there in the first place. Although I’ve not yet heard or played the new organ I wholeheartedly endorse its presence as a far better instrument for that location than the pipe organ ever was or ever could have been.

    I was particularly impressed by this organ after hearing and playing it for the first time, and it was an intentional choice to play this particular hymn here, as Nicholas had recorded the same at Hunter Baillie with its well-regarded Hill organ, and I wanted to allow people to compare between the two. Apart from me playing the hymn slower (which I am sometimes guilty of), I think this particular pipe organ holds up rather well compared to the Hill (and no doubt the Hill at Hunter Baillie is a fantastic pipe organ) - the only downside is that the acoustic here is on the dryer side. In my opinion this was one of the better organs we've visited so far, and I'd go as far as to say it'd be in my top 10 list of the pipe organs (out of around 90) we've recorded so far.

Then, everything, and everyone, stops. It plays, in the sun-drenched ruins, in a broken city, in a roofless, ruined Church. How do you, with musical awareness, characterise the scene? In particular, aesthetically? It seems to be the sole glimmer, or hint, of beauty, in a film that was otherwise an unrelenting depiction of misery. The boy then moves into the shade ("ombra") of a ruined building.

    The author of this traditional Roman Missal prayer is unknown. It is frequently and incorrectly attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), as it was a favorite of his and appears at the start of his Spiritual Exercises. The hymn is often sung at Communion and refers to the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. St Ignatius, founder of the Jesuit Order, was also a leading luminary of the Counter-Reformation. He established schools which thrive to this day.
