Two Days of Overengineering, 5 Minutes of Genius - Rank 30 Worldwide! - Poly Bridge 3!
Mindblowing modified Master Mode level by Masonator. I go straight into full jank on this one, as per usual, but I figure out some super basic things. Turns out the solution is in fact a super basic one, and that is awesome. These are my tellings of the journey of self discovery and hydraulic masterfulness that I went through on this level. Much fun. Such hardship.
I am a real life civil engineer with more than 10 years experience working as a professional consultant. I've been through all the complexities of designing something from scratch and then scratching my head on site trying to make things work with the contractor - all the while doing everything to strict timelines!
I understand I am not the only Real Civil Engineer into gaming and building things in games on TH-cam, but I am not here to compete. I am here to have a bit of fun making videos and learning to edit videos. So please join me along on this journey if you feel like supporting me 🤓. I am open to collaborating with anyone interested in gaming and/or Civil Engineering!

      Ohhhh lol I had the feeling one of you spotted the clever mechanism and then the others went on the quest to optimise it the most to win haha. Amazing work getting up there though either way! Whenever I try to watch someone else's idea and replicate it, it usually doesn't get me the win hahah... As in, I've still got quite a long way to go with the game to understand all the tricks haha 😅

    Well done! This was a tough one and you did it. The movement isn't easy if you're not familiar with 90° mechanisms. The principle used here is incredibly powerful. Learning how to flexibly apply the 90° mechanism will be a big boon for future hydraulic levels. Learning it has been the singular biggest drop in difficulty I've experienced in this game; hydraulic levels went from hard to easy. 😄 you got the basics down already so it won't be hard for you!

    You made the level way harder for yourself then necessary. That is my gig but i'll allow it for now. I believe the biggetst "problem" on your left bridge @20:00 were the missing bracings because the two steel got colinear and failed. (edit: wrote it too soon, you fixed it later yourself^^) I liked the way you reverse engineered Lazy's tutorial tho.

      Bahahha oh man, "if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing". Hello sir, ‎I had a question. ‎That is, does the red-green color-blind have any effect on the civil engineering career, for example, to get a job or in other fields? ‎

    • @RookieGamingEngineer
      @RookieGamingEngineer 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Sayed, that's such a random question you've asked me that I've never really thought too much about haha. So, let's see, I'll try keep this short. When it comes to engineering drawings, yes, having a red-green colourblindness will cause you some troubles with reading physical drawings. But looking at PDF drawings, there are ways to manipulate the colours that look too similar for you very easily in tools like Bluebeam. So I don't want you to think that will be a limiting factor if that is what you want to pursue. In engineering software, the red-green colourblindness should not hold you back at all. In all other facets of civil engineering, I do not see how a red-green colourblindness could be a limiting factor. Most people in the general public don't even realise the degree they are colourblind until they do the formal tests to check that. I knew one electrical engineer who was colourblind, and he was a Principal Engineer as well. So being red-green colourblind did not hold him back. One thing to consider is whether employers where you live do the Ishihara Tests to determine if you are colourblind or not, and whether they will use that against you if you come back as colourblind. Hope that gives you some things to consider. I personally believe everyone should strive to do what they want and think is best for them when it comes to career selection. I don't personally believe being colourblind will make you any lesser of a civil engineer. Thanks for dropping by and asking such an interesting question! 🤔

    • @RookieGamingEngineer
      @RookieGamingEngineer 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      TL;DR: of the above is that no, I don't believe that being colourblind will affect your civil engineering career, but the full answer is a bit more complicated than that.

    I was worried you wouldn't be able to beat this weekly because I had wanted to make a crane/claw machine mechanism on the flatbed truck (which admittedly is not as realistic in real life) but I'm glad you figured out a solution regardless! I like building difficult challenges, this one's probably around 5.5 sheep in terms of difficulty because the hydraulic movements are a bit unorthodox. It was nice that you commented on the decoration too! I feel like that's one of the most underrated things about workshop levels, because often decorating the level takes way longer than building the level (took about 1 hour to build and solve, then 3 more hours to decorate). Anyways, best of luck for any of my levels that become weeklies, especially those that aren't from Master Mode!

    • @RookieGamingEngineer
      @RookieGamingEngineer 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I thought it was a fun level haha. Thanks for thinking about me when you realised that your level was chosen to be that week's challenge lol! I'm glad I didn't disappoint. I thought your level was very creative. It's a cool concept you pulled off. Honestly, the crane + flatbed type combo does exist that's why I managed to go there haha, I was just so fixated on the tow truck style approach I was doing at the start. That turned out to be quite a rabbit hole haha, but glad I took a breather to step back and think about other ways to solve it. I watched the gallery afterwards and was surprised by the claw mechanisms people made, I bet you loved those too! I think the way I did my crane was pretty unique in the end compared to other solutions, and that catapult at the end was also another pretty unique feature - both I'm proud of in the end haha, my own flare to it! Looking forward to your other levels mate, you make probably the toughest levels I've played so far to be honest!

    • @RookieGamingEngineer
      @RookieGamingEngineer 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I loved the attention to detail with the decorations too. Wow. Okay, I didn't realise there was a bit to the decorations. That makes it extra awesome to know that! I'll be looking out for cool decor more now that I know that!

    • @TonyZ01234
      @TonyZ01234 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@RookieGamingEngineer Well, the time it takes to take to decorate a level depends on how much effort you want to put into the backdrop. I usually like having some small details and "islands" so that will clearly take more time. The christmas tree, for example, took around 30 minutes on its own because of the decorations I placed on it. Will every level have this high amount of detail? Not really. But it is nice to appreciate the details, especially for the Christmas and New Year's weeklies, where a lot of thought has been put into the theming ahead of time.

    I remember me being a bit angry at myself after watching some other replays: Why didn't I have the idea to build a "custom box" for the "filling" and let the bulldozer just drive over that barrel? This would have been way cheaper than trying to build a bridge that's sturdy enough to withstand that heavy barrel-thingy-bumpy-rolling ... 😒 But whatever - I thought "that's a nice one, solution variety". 9:20 - Great idea for the second bridge to avoid that bumpy rolling. 9:58 - Awesome. Working solution. 21:02 - Be careful with stopping the simulation that early. That winning soung ("pling!") isn't enough to get a working solution automatically saved as "cheapest without breaks". Personally I lost some solves by stopping it too early, continuing trying to optimize, fail - and then I din't have a fall-back. Wait until the stat numbers are plopping up.

I feel like I've come a long way since then but still have a long way to go :) This whole channel is a bit of an experiment and hobby for me to see how it can help me improve my presentation and speech skills, I think it really does help a lot forcing myself to sit down to listen and edit things to learn how unnatural and forced my speech is sometimes haha. Also let's face it, I reckon most engineers are autistic and socially awkward. I definitely know I am 😅 Thanks though truly, I've heard about speaking to a mirror to practise but I've never done it before. I will go and watch some videos about that and then sit down to actually do it!

    8:40 - Although I really like the catcher for the yellow car and the hydro for the buggy - you're getting yourself into "tactical" trouble. Yellow car crosses EVERY path of the other vehicles if falling down on the left side. So you need to have an idea for EVERY platform how to get the bridges for the other cars out of the way. 9:30 - Now I'm interested ... other than in real life engineering in Poly Bridge it's totally fine and usual to drop some parts from time to time. Not quite sure if you'll do it for this level. Or if you - like me - prefer building "reusable" bridges. Kay. Gonna continue watching and I'll see 😎 11:40 - Ah. Lucky me I didn't bet. My bet would have been wrong. But my gut feeling was "40% no dropped materials" vs. "60% reusable". Hm. 🤔Maybe 60% of the bride stays reusable? 12:05 - Ouch, I hate it, when that happens. Sometimes I almost feel pity for the poor cars. Like I would for a turtle lying on its back. 16:20 - Ouch. But yeah ... everything is connected. You maybe would have had less trouble cutting out that one "hydro road", rotate it a bit to the left, paste it in - so with a longer hydro it would have been pulled farther down (for a smoother ramp). And not needing to change too much afterwards. But sometimes it's hard to spot the easiest fix. Although - who knows if it really would have been easier? "Butterfly" is hard on levels like these. 18:00- Having watched so far - Troubles like these likely to happen, when trying build as cheap as possible right up from the start. Although I recommend not doing that ... on the other hand it's enjoyable content. ♥ 18:39 - Did you notice the "Curated Only" checkbox for the gallery? 19:36 - Yeah, for me the white car got stuck a few times, too. "Butterfly" ... 22:03 - Aaaw, again. So annoying ... 25:23 - Tadaaah! 28:02 - Niiiice. Same thought as I had at about 8:40 28:40 - Wow. Path for the yellow car is awesome. Love this. All in all ... lots "N-Son-X" moments for this level.

This week's challenge was a lot of fun for sure.

    10:30 - Building two loop halves with a gap is a great idea. Problem might be that vehicles can't accelerate while they are flying. Wheels need to touch the road for gaining speed. So they probably won't jump back far enough. But the path you're thinking of is alright. If you can't make it work like this - there could be a road in the middle that is moved left and right and left by a hydraulic? Like a kind of "switch"? Generally using more and shorter roads is beneficial. If the path is smooth (less "bumps"), cars usually get more speed. 17:45 - "So I need to now adjust the way it lands" ... yeah - and this part might be a bit annoying. There's a vehicle ("Monster Flipper") that can land upside down and still continue driving. But finally I decided against them for making it a bit more challenging. And ... I simply don't like the way "Monster Flipper"s look. The "Dune Buggy" is a cute little car 😉 18:45 - "I do not think that is that what pufaxx wanted" - well, uhm - of course there's a "Dev Solve" for every level, but I'm always happy to see different ideas that also do work. Some people might call it "cheesing", but I usually think of them as clever shortcuts. 18:58 - Aaaw ... ramps interfering with the flight path. That's difficult to fix for symmetric levels. 20:50 - Ouch, you're right. A hydraulic phase before the first vehicle goes would have added to more solution variety. Didn't think about that. 22:50 - Tadaah! Nice solve. I really like it. 24:07 - Not intentional. Happens from time to time, gallery just lost connection. <-[just tested. I was wrong. It might be intentional. Gallery works fine, but I also don't see thumbnails any more after finishing a successful simulation of a weekly. Interesting ...]

      Hey man, so is that how the joint snapping works? I need to practice this more with the flexible bridges like this one. It sort of seems like when the movement slows down the most, that's when the snapping happens

    • @Crian05
      @Crian05 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RookieGamingEngineer As far as i know - and if i am wrong, pufaxx can correct me - the joints are only able to "connect" or "disconnect" from eachother while a hydraulic phase is going. That's why in one weekly (with the 180° bridge) even if you solve it without a real hydraulic movement, you needed one short hydraulic to increase the time the phase is active, because the nodes had to travel 180°.

Sadly I couldn't get my best idea to work without breaks: I built a row of flaps rotating 180° just with the weight. So the first ball rolled over every flap, last flap turned upside down. Second ball rolled over the remaining flaps, penultimate flap rotated ... and so on. But the last flap - I had breaks.

    Wow. This type of "handing over" stuff you chose - that indeed is the trickiest, because two of the split joints that need to be handed over sit on an anchor. Looking at the joint in the middle of the bridge: This could be a "1". Left steel arm a "2", right steel arm a "3". Handing over THIS isn't that hard. Problematic are the outer joints of the bridge. They can't be a "1", because anchors already are a "1". Setting up the controller correctly for those two is a bit counterintuitive - but you managed it. Congrats =) ... I think it's possible to make the roads "click" on the right side by using WASD mod making the second hydro a tiny bit longer. Or maybe adjust both of them just a bit to "fix" the small imperfections adding up.

Learning so much about the game fast haha. Btw I don't know anything about the game and haven't looked up anything, so there is like an end game type deal then? Do you mean that's when you unlock the last thing you can build? Thanks again! Appreciate the support and kind words!
