IT amazes me that the number of bullets that already been recovered and they are still being found pretty regularly!! IT boggles the mind!!

Forget about these cleaning methods and get yourself some Oxyclean detergent powder. Simply mix the powder with some hot water, shake it up a bit to make it foam, then drop your bullets in and walk away. ( if it’s a cavity-base bullet and the cavity is packed with dirt, use something to scrape the dirt out of the cavity first.) Come back 30 minutes later, rinse the bullets under some warm water, and they will come out snowy white. No scrubbing or brushing required. For brass buttons, belt plates, breast plates and copper coins, DO NOT put any liquid on them, not even water. Take a toothpick or bamboo skewer and start gently rubbing the relic with the end of the skewer in a back-and-forth or circular motion. Sometimes you can even “pick” the crust off a little at a time first. As you are rubbing the artifact, the powdered dirt will actually act as a polish and give the artifact a nice, glowing patina. I ruined the patina on many a button and coin before by putting it in water, ammonia, and other liquid cleaners. The only exception is when you have a button that is heavily gilted and you want to bring out the gilt. Then and only then will I mix ammonia and water 50/50 and let the button soak, checking it early and often. If you see a bluish haze around the artifact, it means the ammonia is working. Periodically use a small, soft brush (baby’s toothbrush is perfect) dipped in the mix to gently brush the button and bring out the gilt.If you don’t see a bluish haze after about 5 minutes, then there is not enough gilt left on the button to preserve. Take it out immediately and soak it in plain water to remove the ammonia. Ammonia will “burn” brass that is not gilted. Just wanted to pass along some of the things I’ve learned after 40 years of relic hunting….

Hey Guy's, love the hunt! Congrat's on the Largies! "A" button is really nice, but hard to beat the coins (all of them, even the clad QT 🤣) I want a bullet, but if I win, you can send the winning bullet to a boy or girl of your choice so they can learn and enjoy history!
