Hello Lothar- I was wondering about your Gibson 175…Did you happen to purchase that from someone in the US ? Does it have a neck repair by chance the headstock? I sold my 175 on eBay to someone in Germany maybe in the early 2000's or even the 1990"s…thanks for your musical help.
I bought my 175 in Cambridge in 1980 while I was studying at Berklee. Unfortunately I broke the neck a few years ago and got an excellent repair from the German luthier Thomas Reg'n. So I guess your former guitar is another one.
@@LotharsGuitarSchool Very cool -I was just wondering if it was the case! How amazing would that have been - btw I grew up in Hamburg form 1970 to late 1976 - got to see many great concerts at the Musikhalle and CCH - even Onkel Pös! great music and great times. Baden Powell used to come through and play a lot - even Yepes with his 10 string., I remember the Berliner Jazz Tagge with Herbie playing on channel 3 - also Keith Jarret and Musikladen with Return to forever live and Stevie Wonder! man that never happened in the US. I am an american that lives in California but mback then i was 10 years when I first came to Hamburg. Govi schalplatten laden - Pop magazine - Sounds too. I did see Little Feat 2 x in Hamburg as well. Geneis 2x's so many shows - so many shows…Good luck to you - I wish you were closer by to make some music together - that would fun. Compression evens out dynamic differences and enhances the attack. I like it. Too bad that you disagree.
Some day you'll look in to her eyes Then there'll be no goodbyes And yesterday will have gone You'll find yourself in another space 500 miles high You'll see just one look and you'll know She's so tender and warm You'll recognize this is love You'll find yourself on another plane 500 miles high Be sure that you love stays so free Then it never can die Just realize this is truth And above the skies you will always stay 500 miles high 500 miles high 500 miles high

Why the chorus? It makes the entire invalid
I just like chorus. It's my sound.
i have also swapped all these models around in my amps .ive often wondered if the different valves had more bass or treble etc as we associate pushed power amp valves with more bass... im not listening with headphones now but i agree with your assessment that there isnt a great tonal difference , but you can lose the range of gain where the guitar sounds nicest and you probably create hiss by turning up the amp to compensate for low volume hitting the power amp. it as interesting to see the graphic EQ . thanks.
Yes, the graphic analyzer makes a more objective comparison possible.
This is great! Thank you!
I'm glad you like!
very helpful,Thanks so much
You're welcome.
Thanks for this video and comparison. I'm currently shopping both of these amps and unsure which way to go. On one hand, the Twin has the bottom and power I like, being that it has more horsepower (if) ever needed (85 watt). Comparing this to the Princeton, which I actually like the tone of the Princeton over the Twin, but it is of course a 1 x 12 or 1 x 10 find against 2 x 12's. It has a clean tone and settings similar to Twin, but at 12 watt, I'm not sure if it's worth the cost when you can ultimately gain more from a Twin. I know it depends on context, and I am playing at home mostly, which is why Princeton prob makes the most sense for room tone (I don't record, but can see how this amp can benefit that aspect). The Twin, I feel, has to be cranked to get the most out of it, that is what it was made for. If unable to crank at home, does it still perform in comparison? For me, it's a matter of finding a used Twin that is about 2/3 the cost of a new Princeton, but then again, harder to find used Princetons and unsure why that is. I may end up buying a Princeton new. Appreciate any added thoughts you have on these comparisons and your recommendations.
For home purpose the Princeton is a much better choice since you reach the sweet spot easily. The twin will be super clean at lower volumes. In order to reach a warmer tube sound you have to play it much louder. And to haul around the twin is quite an endeavor.
I bet you will get a little better tone if you back off the gain to about 7 and the master at 9
Unfortunately I cannot try it out any more. I sold it!

This is similar to The Johnny Smith Approach to Guitar, but Smith uses the grand-staff and three forms.
Interesting. I don't know Johnny Smiths approach. I wonder how this works with only three forms. I guess you'd have to move more through the positions. Someone suggested to do all 12 keys in one position. Possible, but requires a lot of stretching of first finger and pinky. I find that awkward.
good lesson
Thanks!

So much thanks for learning to me the basic chords sequences in order to play this marvellous composition. I recently heard the amazing performance of this song by Jonni Mitchell live, with an incredible support band ( Metheny, Lile Mays, Brecker, Jaco Pastorius, Elias) and I got fascinated. Thanks again, you are a smart guitarist and teacher. Greetings from Spain!!!!
Thanks for your appreciation. Also check out Jeff Beck's amazing version. Different but very emotional.
@@LotharsGuitarSchool Yes, you're right about Jeff Beck's version. I know it. Excellent tutorial. Thanks again!! 🍻

That's true
A small class A amp is the least suitable amp to hear the difference between all these tubes. Pretty much a total waste of time
Your comment is much appreciated - though I disagree.
Thank you for making this video. At 1:20 you say there are no II V but isn't C7 F7 Bb7 a II V I?
Thanks for the hint. When we say II V I, we really mean IIm7 V7 Imaj7, coming from within the tonality (dorian, mixolydian, ionian). Here the C7 is actually a V7/V being a dominant of the dominant. And the Bb7 is actually a I7 requiring a mixolydian scale.

I am fine. It is just my usual self. But thanks for your concern.
Is it better to read sheet music if I want to play classical music ? Thanks
You have to begin somewhere to read music. Though this course ic basically designed for pick style guitar in popular music, it won't hurt when to read it with a classical guitar. But to read fluently classical guitar is a different ballgame and will need additional material.
Hey Lothar, can you help me out? I’m looking at the song By the fireside by Al Bowlly. Starting in the 5th bar I have the progression going Fmaj to Fmaj6 or Dmin7 then to Bb7 then to E7 then back to Fmaj. If the song is in Fmaj I can’t understand how the Bb7 and E7 relate to the Fmaj, or even its relative minor Dmin. Any ideas? Thanks
Hi Jake, great question! In the key of F, Bb7 is the iV7, a common subdominant chord derived from the diatonic chord IVmaj7 = Bbmaj7, which is the lydian mode containing a #11. Thus the IV7 chord asks for the #11 as well, making the IV7 a Bb7/#11 chord using the mixolydian #11 scale, which is on the 4th degree of the Melodic minor scale. The E7 is just the tritone substitution for Bb7, which contains the notes of the altered scale, which is by definition on the 7th degree of F melodic minor - of course the very same scale as before. Thus on the 7th degree of F you can have a VII7altered chord = E7 altered. Though it has no dominant function relating to the key of F, it has a subdominant function, which has a slight tendency to resolve to the tonic as well. So these 2 chords can be seen as being derived from the parallel minor key = F melodic minor, which relates to F major with just one different note = eb. Thus these chords fit perfectly into the key of F adding just a little more color, an additional tension. I hope that explains it for you. Best regards Lothar
@@LotharsGuitarSchool Thanks for the answer, I think I understand. So I could also just think of those two bars as in F melodic minor?
@@jakemcaleer1752 Exactly! Nevertheless, when improvising over it, it is advisable to think the chords and their arpeggios and fill up with the notes of the scale (or approach notes).
Excellent... Have a nice day!
Thanks!

Very nice playing. Do you have and ideal about how much its weight is? Thank you.
I don't know it's exact weight. But since it is a solid state amp it doesn't need as big transformers as a tube amp. It is pretty light.
Thank you awhollotta bunch. I never could afford personal instruction and I could never figure out the fingering by ear. One of the best songs ever recorded. Keep up the good work!
This is one of the first songs I ever transcribed about fifty years ago.
I was wondering if you could do one of my favorite tunes of all time. I hate to admit the song was composed, or even the idea came from, bacharach. Chaka Khan did an incredible job of singing on a version of Alfie. Even at a slow tempo the song is involved. Cher put the Alfie tune on the contemporary pop charts, but NOBODY can sing like Chaka Khan on that one. I have ideas, but I just want to know what you would do with Alfie (?)
Interesting - but which song are you talking about?
Thanks for your reply Lohar. P.S., you have an excellent trademark name easy to remember. Unlike when I get lucky on guitar and forget what I did. Anyways, bacharach composed a song that was made famous by Cher singing it. The name of it is Alfie. It was also interjected into a movie with the same name which has Shelley Winters and Michael Caine, by the same title,.. Alfie. Perhaps bacharach composed this tune for the movie the same way John Williams and other composers do. I don't know. I have considered a chord progression for this song, but even as I think of the chords in my head, they change to something else. I think it's involved, or could certainly become very involved. So, that's why I brought that up if you're interested. The end of the song is intentionally not resolved. It's like bacharach put a trademarked ending on the song, where cher, and Chaka Khan both end on a different note. ... "Aaalphiee.."
Excellent! And thank you very much for the lessons picking notes in the video as well.
You're welcome!
could you not a got a bigger Princeton ?
It's big enough. I sold the twin in the meantime - way to heavy.
