    Such a shame British aircraft companies building aircraft for British airlines as in the VC 10 ( then BOAC changed their mind and slagged it off when the 747 was announced) also Trident and BAC 111 government intervention every time, and the French and Americans built planes that airlines wanted, and left them in the dust, and the BAC 146 great aircraft but with 4 engines on a regional jet, ?? what on earth were they thinking !!!!!

    What a fascinating cockpit. I really liked this aircraft, and I remember it well as a boy watching the shuttle come into Glasgow from London-in fact I was in the cockpit of a Trident last week at the Dumfries aviation museum-which I highly recommend if you get a chance to visit. I am a Boeing man, and it is fascinating to see the difference between the 2 aircraft. In many ways , the Boeing 737 cockpit hasn't changed that much from the time Trident began flying, that includes up to the current Max. However it was a pity that the Boeing 727 stole a lot of thunder from the Trident with many operators choosing the former Thanks for the video and to the crew for their stories-much appreciated!

    I was always fascinated with the Papa India crash that I well remember as a boy and the Trident-in fact I was in the cockpit of one just last week-it looked a very busy place to be ( I have spent a lot of time at the pointy end) . Knowing what goes on in the cockpit-and what can go wrong, I believe the argument in the crew room before take-off was crucial to what followed. The droop lever was raised despite being placarded not to be raised below approx 180kts. The lever was indeed and the droops retracted-only one man was likely to have done that. The human factor is the "key" here (excuse the pun, but those familiar with details of the accident will know what I mean)

    Lovely video, it brought back a lot of memories. I was a BA engineering apprentice between 1975 and '79. I then was a line maintenance engineer in Tech 1, terminal 1 at LHR working on the Trident. A very clever aircraft, far ahead of its time.

    I was lucky enough to be on the extra shuttle from Belfast Aldergrove in 1981, 6 of us on the 3B and me the solo kid plus crew and I was in the Junior Jet club so they let me sit in the jump seat from about 20 mins in when I went to get my log signed. We flew into LHR 28R at darking dusk, a magical experience for me and now a sorely missed friend flying in the sky. Great British jets 👏

    Seems like a lot of “hunting and pecking” compared to modern CATIIIB systems. The moving map is interesting but not really necessary with RMI and DME being more than sufficient to situate yourself to intercept the localizer and glideslope either full procedure or self-vector (radar vectors of course make it moot and the needles and distances are just for cross checking). The AI doesn’t seem to have the rising runway, speed cues, or rad alt nearby nor any lateral or vertical deviation (I’m assuming the crosshairs are the flight director) which are required on modern CATIIIB because the pilot literally has no time to look anywhere else. Of course even more modern aircraft have HUDs which can even replace autopilot on a CATIII approach as the pilot doesn’t have to transition to outside.

    • @Kathikas1
      @Kathikas1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The moving map display was actually quite useful for en route situational awareness re other traffic etc and was easily updated by motoring the stylus around via four directional buttons. For a while the stylus could ink the paper but it proved messy and an expense You really don’t want to know what vertical speed the GroundGripper was capable of in emergency descents! 10k rpm reverse on the outboards, full spoiler, disable the nose gear and drop the mains and wind it up to Mmo/Vmo - cruise to FL100 in not much more time than it took to don a mask … (in the sim!) Without water meths or a fourth engine she really didn’t like inversions. A summertime departure from Luqa often meant you were several miles up the coast towards Gozo before you clambered back up above Dingli Cliffs … Oh, and until they removed the outboard ailerons it could out roll a Lightning!

    Always loved the Trident. Now they dont need pilots or engineers - just a spotty computer geek in a dark room ! Chum of mine started like me, PPL, Instructor, CPL and "Any Way Possible". He ended up a Line Training Captain for EasyJet. On finals to land one day with an A320 and a 24 year old Captain fresh out of School they had a Hyd failure on short finals and the young Captain called to go around. Rob took control and landed straight ahead. On asking the Captain what his option to go around would have offered he replied "I thought it best to sort it out in the air". Such is the level of experience of low hour ab-initio "Toothpaste tube" Captains. For the uninitiated, a hydraulic leak - if left for a few minutes could / will end up with a loss of brakes or worse - complete loss of control of the flying surfaces as everything on the airbus is hydraulically controlled...

This aircraft is very dear to my heart because it used to take us from LHR back in 1970`s to see family in Ireland. I will always love the Trident. Indeed it did but at least in part because the stall warning / protection system was overidden - ie dumped. However, before condemning this action we need to take into account that the Trident aircraft had something of a reputation for false stall warnings. Unfortunately for all concerned, on the fateful day, it was a genuine warning - the system was working correctly.
