These being said by them in this order allows BOTH halves to have the same context of "Thomas helps Gordon". It's such a good detail that actually Thomas isn't going to get anything in exchange for this, it's just used by Gordon as manipulation for his own ego.

In my own story of smudger. Smudger gets his freedom when he was purchased by the people when the mid sodor railway and he was taken to the skarloey railway. There he does agree to be a useful engine this time and work hard. Duke would probably not be happy to see him when he is found and taken to the skarloey railway aswell just like in the episode bulldog.
