A morning with the the legendary Ordaz family: first with Chuy Ordaz Jr. on a pick, then we go over the hill to meet his father, Chuy Ordaz Sr, at their new vineyard site, which is the first site they'll farm which they also own. And with the Ordaz family at the helm, it's only a matter of time until the winemakers start lining up for blocks in the vineyard, including Morgan Twain-Peterson MW. ...

    Morgan, LOVE your videos and your winemaking style, and of course your knowledge of historic CA vineyards. But these vineyards are Central Coast, as are the Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey vineyards you previously visited. Would love to see a true Southern CA tour, the obscure vineyards south of Santa Barbara.... However, this is Central Coast, not Southern CA.

    In australia we call that rust mite. We see that in our vineyards particularly when fungicides have been used that kill off or sterlise the female predatory mites. Over use or high rates of Sulfur i.e. 600gm/100L rate. Using Mancozeb, Polyram, Chlorpyrifos, and other harsh fungicides will also create mite problems.

    Looks like you guys were having fun. I am a hobby wine maker, this year I got 100 lbs of petite sirah and the BRIX was 21 and pH 3.20, does it means that the grapes were not full ripe ? Thank you.

    • @bedrockwineco.4022
      @bedrockwineco.4022 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching the video! For your fruit, the numbers are only part of the story on ripeness, which is also somewhat subjective itself - different winemakers pick the same vineyard at different times, based off wine style, preference, and experience. So unfortunately the judgement of proper ripeness on your fruit is really down to your preference and experience. Good luck with the wine!

    Great video. Syrah is my favorite wine but I haven't yet tasted Petite Sirah, one of these days. Hope your Petite Sirah wine came out good without smoke flavor/smell. At 18:32 you mention climate change, I think it is a code word for #globalwarming but temperature data from NOAA starting on March 28, 1893 to present shows a cooling trend. I look it up data for Sonoma, CA but NOAA has no weather station there, the closest that I could find was Vacaville, about 25 miles (east) on a strait line from Sonoma. The hottest day in Vacaville was 115 F in June 15, 1961, and in that year there were 7 days of temperatures above 110 F. It hasn't got to 115 since. We are constantly bombarded (gaslighted) by the news media, politicians and other interest groups about global warming/climate change but the data from the U.S. government does not support that claim. Wishing you good wine making.

  • @markspc1
    @markspc1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Jake but don't bet your career on climate change (#globalwarning) specialty in California, it is just pure politics because temperature data from 100 + years shows a cooling trend. Also Alpine discoveries show that the pre-industrial Roman era was warmer than today. In fact most of the last 10,000 years since the end of the last ice age were warmer than today.

    I have a single Thompson vine that I bought this year. My initial plan was to build a 5 foot trellis above a 25 gallon planter box, but I prefer the style in your video. Will the Thompson grapes adapt this shape, or do you recommend another system. How many season should I remove the grapes before allowing them to mature. I live in Sacramento and if you make a yearly follow-up video on the progress of these vines, I will give you all the lemons and oranges you will ever need. I will be following your example if I Thompson’s can be trained to this way.

      Global warming/climate change is 100% politics and 0% science. If the politicians that Californians keep on voting for over and over refuse to do forest management these wild fires will always happen. There is a multi-billion dollars industry in California to fight forest fires and they are not interested in forest management.

    So question: if you have that much vigor in that vine with so few positions, why would you not prune to a longer spur (say 4 or 5 buds) on the existing positions while new positions are being established elsewhere? Wouldn't that give the vigor somewhere to go and help balance out the vine in the mean time?

    • @bedrockwineco.4022
      @bedrockwineco.4022 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! Here's a response from Jake: "That is a very good thought from a vigor management perspective. We don’t like to leave longer spurs because that can lead to a congested fruit zone with each shoot carrying clusters all coming from the same spur. An alternative would be to leave a “kicker cane,” which is a cane of 8+ buds somewhere on the vine. This will disperse the vigor during early shoot growth and then it can be removed sometime in spring."

    do you mean that these old vines can fruit without water?

    • @bedrockwineco.4022
      @bedrockwineco.4022 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep - without irrigation (dry farmed). A lot of old vines in CA were established as dry farmed, so the root systems are able to find enough water to support their growth and fruit production. This vineyard can sometimes get irrigated once or twice a year, but that's it - in a climate that receives essentially no rain in the summer months.

    Has this vineyard been unused/unmaintained for a while?

    • @bedrockwineco.4022
      @bedrockwineco.4022 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure on the current status, but at the time of this video, the vineyard was being maintained and harvested. So this is year-to-year pruning, as opposed to rehab pruning you might see with abandoned/unmaintained sites.
