Update...Cogswell Interchange Redevelopment Project Part 19 (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
Halifax NS is growing rapidly with a goal of reaching one million people in most of our lifetimes. It will be necessary to take down many short buildings to find more space for high rises. It is vital for Halifax to start building high density housing, many buildings of at least forty stories. So many plans for high rises include 2 or 3 retail levels replacing one retail structure with another more thoughtful building.
Will they close Water Street to take down that large concrete wall???
The concrete wall facing Scotia Square is all down!!!HORRAY
It looks amazing. Only two walls left. The small one by the Hotel Barrington, which might have to remain in some form for the hotels receiving doors, and the massive one by the Casino. In part 26 you can still see a bit of the base of some columns that still have to be removed. For the first time I could see the treatment plant from the Hotel side. Huge transformation so far.
All the money this is costing could be spent on something more important. What a waste.
I disagree. They wasted the money when they first destroyed a community and built this. I'm not sure if you have drove over these over passes but they were not in the best shape. Always full of pot holes, and the concrete for the guard rails were starting to crumble. It was going to require a lot of money to maintain it. This project opens land for new buildings, and business which bring in taxes, it creates area for a new bus terminal, as well as public spaces.
It was more necessary to built a full capacity hospital.
Both are necessary. There is work being done at the hospital. I haven't shot a video there yet or heard what exactly it is for yet
The progress on the concrete wall with dirt removal is going nicely. it will be interesting to see what Barring Street from Scotia Square will look like once finished.
That will be interesting since the street will be lowered.
As more and more beautiful new buildings replace old structures with a great story/history it is important to remember the history of the earlier buildings. Space should be created within the new building to simulate/illustrate the Pharmacy space.
I like how they keep the old facade on some of the old buildings in Halifax. You get to keep some of that old look from the street.
Trash heap before the demo
Ay good to see this video my demo crew takedown the overpass 😃👍
Nice work. It came down fast. I almost missed it.
There are two hundred streets in the downtown core of Halifax that were built before the automobile. Honestly these two hundred streets are better suited for pedestrians, cyclists but not horses because of the poop. We should think car-lite and bus- only lanes .These two hundred streets really can't be widened and the only place for parking would be these horrible multi- level parking lots .
They seem to want to do that on some streets. I can't see it happen for them all thought. People were up in arms with the changes to Spring Garden road that would cause some to park around the corner, rather than on Spring. If they couldn't even drive it, I think it could hurt the downtown core. I see people jump on the bus to go one stop which was about a block/block and a half.
@@beautifulnovascotia Here's another problem. Something like forty thousand new immigrants moved here in the last two years and the car-centric culture here convinced them that the American dream is for all of then to have an automobile. So how are tens of thousands of those new cars going to fit especially in the gridlocked, congested downtown core ? People have to have choices cars , buses, pedestrians, bicycles, ferries and trains. As it stands now cyclists and pedestrians don't have that choice because cars make it to unsafe. That's not democracy and if other cities in Europe with cold snow and ice can afford more bike lanes so can we .
Looking like a totally different city !!!
The waterfront is a gem for Halifax!!
I can't argue with that. I have spent many days and nights down there throughout my life. I think they have made many positive changes to it over the last 5 to 10 years.
I love Queensland Hope u enjoyed it to :)
We do enjoy it there. I have gone out there more than a few times to relax and listen to the waves
could you do an update for me. Thanks
Yes I can. I will go do that today. I was hoping to do that Wednesday or Thursday but was out if the city linger than planned.
@@beautifulnovascotia Beautiful job mate!!! It's looking great!
@@iworshipgloves Thank you. I appreciate it. One thing that hit me when down there, that angle between the excavators and the hill from the ramps, hasn't been visible for over 50 years. Being able to stand between the two parkades and looking up Cogswell will be mine blowing for me.
@@beautifulnovascotia I look forward to be able to walk down Barrington Street past Scotia Square into a new neighbourhood!!
@@iworshipgloves That is a wild thought. I'm excited to see that new neighborhood. I'm also excited to see people headed back to the waterfront. I was down there last weekend and was surprised at how many people were down there.
Did everyone quit working?
Lol. No. I wasn't able to make it down during the work day. They are hard at work during the day, Monday to Friday. I like getting video during thr work day but it isn't always possible.
I always found it funny how there was a McDonald's and a gym directly next to each other
Lol. They seemed to do well together. Opposites attract.
Can’t wait to see this new home for tents
Apparently, the city would rather them in the commons and in Point Pleasant Park, so this area should be OK. This site will be under construction for years, so I doubt this would make a good spot. It would be nice if the province could find a way to find homes, and mental and addiction help for those in the tents
halifax...an ugly city
No its not. There's a reason they're doing this development though, it was a crappy development from the 60's so they're tearing it down and replacing it with something better
Halifax sure can use a strip bar or two because it's about the only city in Canada that doesn't have one .
I sthis a tempory road????
From what I can find, the Cogswell rd section will go right down between the two parking structures by the casino. So the bend to the left will straighten out. The section at 0:48 will go right in front of the sewer treatment plant, up into the roundabout. That will be a part of Barrington st which will connect to the section in front of Scotia Square. The other side of the dirt lot at 0:36 will become Proctor St. which comes down the road between the parking structure behind that lot and the building beside it. The section just up from the shot at 0:59 will not drop down like that. It will go straight from Nora Barnard, to Proctor St. and will be called, Poplar St.
Well done . It's looking amazing!!!
Thanks. It is coming alone. Now they just need to remove the not so great wall of Halifax. As someone who loves the water, I can't figure out why they thought a massive wall that close to the waterfront was a good idea? I'm excited to see it open up.
Bye bye 😕
When I was young, I thought it was interesting. As I grew older, it just seemed like a poorly maintained waste. As I learn what was lost to build it, I was happy to see it go.
@@beautifulnovascotia I can't wait to see what they'll build in it's place. For now, getting around it will be a PITA.
Beautiful project ❤❤❤
You can stand on the parking garage to get a good view. It's hard do get up there though since there isn't an exit from the building to the top floor.
I have footage from there that I need to edit
Beautiful street ❤❤❤
Granville Street has such carm!!
It is an interesting street that seemed forgotten for so long. It is changing a lot with the Press Block, and that empty lot is being developed. I was surprised to see that when I shot this video. Last time I was down there, there was no evidence of any work coming up. The empty lot below it, on the other side of Hollis, is also being developed currently.
Excellent update!!! Thanks
Thank you, and you're welcome. Some big changes in the last few weeks. Some big changes start in just over a week when Barrington Street closes by Scotia Square
@@beautifulnovascotia That should be interesting to see!
Nice construction work ❤❤❤❤
I love this building!!!
I do as well.
It looks so different now that it's gone!
It does. There have been a lot of people that are sad to see it go.
The damn thing's finally getting built!
It did seem to get off to a slow start. Seems to be moving pretty well now.
Great to see the former Birk's site redeveloped! Well done.
I still miss the mural but it is nice to see that corner get developed.
I totally rely on you for this! progress! Thank you
You're welcome, and thank you. I happy to hear someone finds value in it.
Don't stop..I can't get enough!!
Can't stop now. I need to film this until it is completed. Especially with the big changes coming. That big concrete wall coming down, new roads, new buildings, green spaces...
Can hardly wait for #23!!!! :-)
I can't believe we are 22 videos in already.
It will be so great to see that concrete wall come down along Water Street
It definitely will. That is why I wanted more shots of it for the before. And the shot between the parkades is one that I wanted as well. That will be the bottom of Cogswell so you will go from seeing a wall, to seeing up a good part of Cogswell Street.
Great footage. Big changes. it will be interesting to see what the new Barrington Street will look like when done. well done.
Thank you. I was able to picture a lot more of the changes yesterday. I also noticed today that the section of Barrington Street, behind the treatment plant, will become Poplar Street. I always wondered if the section on the North side of Brunswick Place and the parkade would become a street with the way it was left. Today I noticed that it will become a street called Proctor Street. There will be a building between it and the treatment plant, and another one on the other side of it that is larger. That will be in that new strip they put in last year to get down to the lights near the casino. It is becoming easier to visualize now.
Granville St is so historic and it feels like a forgotten child!
I looked up some information on Granville St after this comment. I was surprised at how important that street was for shopping and so on. Other then the North end of the street, which I always liked with the cobble stones and so on, it always seemed like a back alley as far as I can remember. It does feels like it has been forgotten.
Speaking of that, I wonder if the press block will have something on the Grandville side or will most of it be focused on Barrington St? As I was typing I decided to look it up. The residence entrance will be on the Granville side. That will bring some foot traffic to Granville. Looking at the designs, it does mostly focus on Barrington St. thought. It will make that area look good and bring some life to that block. I wonder how long it will be before something it built on the corner of Grandville and Sackville? I could see that having a front entrance on Hollis St. It would be nice if it had shops or something on the Granville side though, and not just have it be the back of the building, like the building across the street.
When I went to NSCAD I remember kelly's Lugguage on Granvill Street near Prince. A beautiful store long gone.
@@iworshipgloves I'm not sure if I remember that store or not. One store I loved, and thought was on Grandville, was apparently on Hollis. It was called Mr I got it and son I will get it. Looks like it might have closed in 89. Mom bought me a ninja suit from that store. I loved going there. I looked up the address and it looks like it was where the parkade is now.
I believe Kellys's was where the TD bank building is now located.
After my visit , I concluded that the entire Granville street should be redone. The old town is looking tired!
Grandville has tiny improvements over the years. The street seems mostly forgotten. Not many reasons to be on that street. It would be nice to see the whole street come alive.
RIP
What a mess and a waste of taxpayer money.
Why do you believe this is a waste of money?
clearing the land for developers to swoop in a build their apartments. They should be the ones paying for it..
@@user-lm6nw3zd7d They destroyed communities to build this interchange. It was done in many areas in North America. It turned out to be a bad idea and isn't needed. It was also in rough condition. We as tax payers are paying for it up front, but developers have to buy the newly created lots. They are not getting them for free. There will also be revenue from property tax. It will also make the area more pedestrian friendly. The only real negatives I can see from this is the traffic during construction, and the number of new cars in the downtown core coming with some of the 2500 residents in the new buildings.

Didn't quality go downhill before it's closure?
Some say it did. Some claim it was still good. I believe I was there only once, and that would have been about 32 years ago, I believe. They say they will reopen in the new building.
@@beautifulnovascotia How long will that take, though?
My guess would be a 12-18 months. I can't find out when they will actually start tearing down the building. So it looks like they will be closed for a couple of years.
They have good steak
Really? The fish was good.
@@beautifulnovascotia yeah I ate there once as a kid and I remember it and always wanted to go back.
@@Everythingoutdoors902 We will have to stop in there sometime.

Gpot to see it up close on April 02. WOW. I can't imagine how they ever got this done and where it is going!! Unbelieveable
It is wild to think about the new roads and buildings. It is going to be a huge change. I hear that some big changes might be happening around June. I think they might be removing the last overpass at that time.
Do you know what's being put up instead?
From what I have read, it is a 9 story building. Top story is a penthouse, street level is retial, apartments in the rest, with underground parking for about 160 I believe
Great update! That's a whole lot of mud!!!! I will be visiting Halifax on April 01 and will see it up close. Thanks
Thank you. That would be cool to see in person after following the progress online for so long.
Did you get a chance to check it out.
