Bug B Gone Juice
Great DIY bug repellent, go to your local Tractor Supply store buy a bottle of Permethrin 10 Livestock, the bottle must contain 10% permethrin. All you do is mix 10 oz of water and 1 oz of permethrin then spray down you clothes, tents, let dry for 24 hours UV ight and a clothes dryer will cause the product to break down faster. the best bug repellent, I have found, they might be bugs on some of you mugs, but the aint no bugs on me.

I just bought my first Coleman lantern. An unused, new in box 10/71 220F195, along with a couple of paks of 21A Thorium mantles and an aluminum filter funnel with filter. What is the purpose of the big hat vent? Is the light output different for a 228 compared to a 220? Is the 228 globe larger too? I like that case. That may be my next search. THANKS for this video!

If the coil is stuck in the generator, try this. Take the tank off the stove, empty the tank of fuel, pump it up like 80 times, heat the generator with a hot propane torch from just behind the tip and work your way back. Keep the torch off the brass tip. Get it to a dull red or better and crank the valve open wide. Or take off the generator, remove the tip and needle, and heat it red hot and quench it in cold water several times. The smoke coming out when you heat it will burn if you light it, and it won't smell as bad. But keep heating it until the smoke stop coming out before you quench it. You may have to do it a couple of times, but they almost ALWAYS break free after this. Give it a try. DO NOT try to yank it out. You can PUSH it out with a hunk of round stock a block of wood and some tappy tappy. But if you try to pull it out and stretch it , it's all over. I quit using carb cleaner and brake clean on these years ago. Heat and quench it where it's at. It's fast and simple. Oh, one more thing. If you get the spring out and there's still a bunch of crap stuck to it, you can burn it off, just make sure to suspend it vertically or lay it flat on a fire brick or it will bend and never be right again. This is one of my favorite models. Heavy and very well built. Easy to work on. Simple great design. These are built like a tank. You can cut down just about any grate to fit them as well.

Nice! Looks like you've got the Coleman virus. If you're gonna get one, it's one of the better ones to get. A couple of tips. While every stove may perform a little different, the full quarter turn is pretty accurate to get the right fuel air mix on startup. An 8th will probably work fine, but may not allow enough throughput for sufficient air, so it may start up a bit rich. Bells and whistles went off when you opened the fuel cap while it was still burning. BAD IDEA!! I can't stress this enough. Especially when you finished the fill tilting the stove. If it was even slightly over filled, the dip tube filler neck, which is designed to prevent over filling to allow sufficient air space to compress and feed the instant lighting feature, would have been submerged in fuel and liquid fuel would have poured out at high velocity with a flame still burning. You can call me safety sally all you want. I've worked on hundreds and hundreds of Coleman stoves and lanterns over the years and I still get them over filled now and then. This was extremely close to a VERY exciting video. While there are a lot of bad reasons, there is no good reason to hold your thumb over the pump hole while tightening the stem. The check valve takes care of that for you. In fact, keeping pressure on the pump can actually do the opposite of what you think you're accomplishing. You think you're HOLDING pressure, when in fact you're more likely LOSING pressure doing it that way. The reason is, when pressure is equal on both sides of the check valve, it won't seat. Even a slightly leaking check valve will seal better than the average pump leather. IF you check valve leaks pretty bad and you are trying to keep using it until you can get it fixed, sure, do whatcha gotta do. I've seen all kinds of mythical methods and weird procedures. "take your thumb off on the up stroke", "start it on 5 pumps", "start it on low", "wait till you hear it spit, then light your match", etc, etc, and It's usually followed by a huge yellow flame and the operator talking like, "This is normal, you just have to wait for it settle down.". BS Follow the instructions to the letter. If that doesn't work, there is a problem with the stove. Most of these "procedures" will result in the same thing: A flooded generator that will take much longer to be ready for cooking. Enjoy the ride, hope you take this in the constructive tone I intended. Have a super memorial day weekend and honor the memories of our fallen military folks who paid the ultimate price for all of us.

Your wife's a keeper. Great gift! These things are awesome and will still be working and hopefully used, by your great grandchildren. The following is offered only as constructive advice. It is not meant to demean or insult you. I speak from decades of experience with literally hundreds of stoves. Yes, I am a Coleman junkie. As a self admitted Coleman procedure Nazi, I want to thank you for following the instructions. It was a pleasant and rare surprise on TH-cam. Some tips and observations: You may have done this before the video, but I recommend pressurizing the tank dry to test for leaks and pump operation prior to fueling. If you do have a leak, it's MUCH easier and less hassle to fix if there's no fuel in it. One thing I recommend is holding your lighter outside and below the burner ring so the only the top half of the flame is above and rim. This keeps the burner from snuffing out the lighter or match. It does appear that the tank is losing pressure. This is what caused the lazy yellow flame later in the video. Most likely the fuel cap gasket. Or less likely, a leaking check valve AND seat/air stem. The tank appears in great condition, so pin holes above the fuel line are not likely at all. Both are easy, cheap fixes. The cleanest, least exciting, light ups are achieved with LOTS of pressure. Especially with these "fat boy" tanks, 50 pumps is recommended on a FULL tank with little head space. Less fuel means even more pumps. For "instant lighting" to work as designed, high air volume and velocity are required. Lighting consumes a lot of air. But it works amazingly well. Brilliant engineering. You cannot over pressurize these tanks with the pump. They are designed with sufficient head space between the pump cup and the bottom of the pump tube to max out at about 40psi no matter how much you pump. At the Wichita factory, random tank samples were taken from each run and destructively hydro tested to 500psi. They ended up looking like a balloon, but didn't burst, split, or leak. Light the match/lighter and hold it to the burner BEFORE quickly opening the valve all the way. "Test" opening the valve and "waiting for the spit" floods the generator and will only make the process take longer. This isn't a lantern with a tiny gas tip. It should light within 2 or 3 seconds. If the burner tubes and bunsen are clean and free of insects, webs or other debris, it will not flare up. As soon as it lights, start pumping to keep up the pressure necessary for good fuel atomization that is the key to the instant lighting system. I hope you try it and pass it on if you like the results. Let me know if you don't. If the above tips don't work, every time, something is wrong with the stove or the fuel is contaminated. Again, I hope you take this for the constructive advice it was intended to be.

@@Traillesstaken I'm always learning new things from others on here. It's a helluva platform for sharing experience. Knowledge not shared is wasted. I admit to being a bit OCD about stoves and lanterns. I simply want folks to get into these and enjoy them. Their unintended misuse by not following the simple instructions over the years has led to them becoming nearly extinct. I was in a sporting goods store a while back and they didn't have a single liquid fueled stove or lantern available! And that's sad. People see a poorly executed light up with a 6 foot flaring yellow conflagration that takes several minutes to calm down and they think that must just part of owning a Coleman stove. The end result is they avoid them like the plague. Your video, obviously isn't one of those. When you got to the part about opening the main valve all the way, I said to myself, Finally, this is guy that gets it. Us men, in general, tend to not read instructions. I read the instructions on instant oatmeal. haha! It frankly aggravates me to see literally hundreds of "How to light a Coleman stove" videos where guys make a huge blaze, flood the generator and/or burners, leave the aux burners open, or give ridiculous advice justified by "this is how my grandfather taught me" as the unread instructions on the lid stare them in the face. It was refreshing to see the instructions followed. Thanks for sharing your gift with us. It's a beautiful specimen. I hope it brings you and yours many years of joy and special memories.

Those are great heaters. I have the taller version but it's the same heater inside. I use mine to heat two stalls in my three car garage (I have a roll up curtain to block off the third stall) and it will keep it over 65 degrees just fine. They run so cheap you can use it 24/7 and keep the shop warm all the time!

I'm restoring a 426D three burner and like the look of the aluminum spray you used so picked up the same can of rustoleum high performance paint. Looking at the can though it doesn't say it's high heat. Did you notice any issues using it. Want to paint the burners but am having second thoughts using it.

Hey bud. First of all thanks for making the video. I've been in to classic Coleman lanterns for awhile but came across one of the older three burners at an estate sale today and it peaked my interest since it burns the white fuel instead of propane tanks. They were selling it for $65 but it was the last day so everything was half off so it was $32.50. It looks to be in great shape but what should I look for functionality wise before trying to fire it up.

@rizzo3689 make sure the tank pumps up and holds pressure, but if it dont it is no big deal you can change parts on the tank and stove pretty easy. But lets say that the tank does not hold pressure then you would have to change the check valve DO NOT take a flat head and try to loosen it you will most likely strip it you will have to buy a check vavle tool. and once you put gas in it and pumped up turn the control knobs on the stove listen if you hear gas sound coming out from the burner eyes. If so then you should be good to go lite it up and cook some hotdogs and burgers
