Day 207 learning cello : Harmonics and Tenor Clef exercise no. 55
21/9 2024
Harmonics and Tenor Clef exercise no. 55 from an unknown english book..
Supershort exercise that I got from my teacher the other day. It includes both tenor clef, harmonics, and position shifting between 1st and 4th positions.
Tenor clef isn't bad - you just have to go 5 tones up from bass clef or 1 tone down from G clef (treble clef). I'm best at treble clef, so it's quite easy to go one note down. However, I will need some pieces with tenor clef to get used to it without calculations.
Harmonics are fun. The explanation from the exercise is that "a string normally vibrates as a single length, but by touching it lightly at its midpoint, it can be made to vibrate in two halves, sounding the harmonic an octave above its true pitch." Now you know! :-)

This is my cello journey. Day 1 was 19th of January 2024. I’m documenting my progress for fun, learning and motivational purpose. Thank you for watching ❤️

Day 206 learning cello : Etude no 5 op. 31 by Sebastian Lee

19/9 2024 Etude no 5, opus 31 by Sebastian Lee (from Forty Melodic and Progressive Etudes / 40 Melodische Etüden). No. 5 is an exercise on the legato and has sooo maaaany notes! I think it was as difficult as No. 3 and took me a whole week to get it clean and flowing (there are some off-pitch notes here and there, but it is as good as it's going to get for now). 11/9 2024 Etude no 4 "Scherzo", opus 31 by Sebastian Lee (from Forty Melodic and Progressive Etudes / 40 Melodische Etüden). Moving on to no. 4 in the second etudes book by Lee. This piece is a scherzo, which translates to "joke/funny" in Italian. So it is a funny, lighthearted piece-very enjoyable to play :-) This etude was a bit easier to play than the previous no. 3, but still has challenges...

    Just discovered your channel. You have made impressive progress in a short amount of time! Your channel description says that you practice 2-3 hours daily. If you wouldn't mind, could you describe your typical practice day? How do you fill up 3 hours of practice? I imagine there must lots of scales and arpeggios in addition to etudes and other pieces. I started taking cello lessons 2 years ago at age 69 and have just recently built up to be able to practice 2+ hours a day, mostly because I joined an orchestra and I need that time to learn all the music, much of which is quite challenging for me. I look forward to following your journey.

    • @Cello_Journey
      @Cello_Journey 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! I have a list of 2 octave scales in both major and minor, which I play through as a warmup- it usually takes half an hour. Then I go directly to a piece I’m learning, because it is etudes I’m studying and thats where I gain my technique. (If I was learning a classical piece I would probably spend more time on exercises etc.) If it’s a very new piece - I play it through until I’m comfortable/ getting a flow in just sight reading it with now hiccups more or less (takes a couple of hours depending on the piece). Then the real work begins and that’s how my practice usually looks like: I identify problem areas and only focus on them. I can use an hour on only one bar for instance. If I feel that there is shaky intonation, I use tuner app on my phone to correct it. The same goes for rhythm where I use metronome from the same app. It could also be problems with uneven left hand fingers in fast passages, where I apply different rhythms to correct it. Bowing can also be uneven - I’m trying different angles, different bowing positions to extract better sound etc. Most importantly is to film yourself, as it is easier to see and hear what I’m doing wrong. The easy etudes I was working on usually takes 2-3 days to finish to my satisfaction, while the more advanced etudes I’m working on now can take up to a few weeks. I work on 1-2 pieces at a time. That is very cool. I hope I will get an opportunity to play in a small orchestra too 🤞

    • @vinyltarian
      @vinyltarian 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Cello_Journey Thank you for the detailed reply! I should filming myself too. I know it will help a lot but I am lazy about it. I'm sure you will find an orchestra to play with when you are ready. I was not really ready technically to join an orchestra, but I'm not getting any younger and all the comments I've read about it said that you never feel ready and should just go for it. Unfortunately for me, I have to simplify things sometimes to be able to play them at tempo and I get frustrated with that.

      Well in the beginning I used a tuner app in order to play in tune. My hearing gradually improved over months and I rarely use it anymore (currently at day 162). I practice 2-3 hours a day and have a small lesson of 20 min every week. I believe the best way to learn an instrument is to play a lot of etudes - you learn different techniques in every piece. I started with easy etudes from S. Lee and now went on more advanced. Once in a while I also play “common” pieces to test out learned skills and just enjoy the music :-) The practice session it self begins with a warmup (scales or som easy etude). Then off to a piece I’m working on. I identify problem areas in that piece and work on them separately. At the end I play the whole piece through and tape it. I analyze video to see if something looks (posture, hands etc) or sounds wrong and correct it as good as I can. I also find the performance of that piece on YT from a good cellist and try to copy it.

    You seem to be very good at reading sheet music. I practise way to little of that and learn much by ear playing along to youtube videos. I feel that playing by ear and having a few pieces I know very well that I play through almost every practise session is a good way for me to focus on everything else with technique and make it sound right instead of looking at a sheet and get distracted by that. Is that something you do as well or do you just rush through all the sheet music you have, cause you're very fast with new pieces all the time.

    • @Cello_Journey
      @Cello_Journey 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was taught classical music including theory as a kid. Reading sheet music is essential in learning technique. There is a lot of information on that sheet on how to play a piece - what scale, how to bow, what fingering to use, what kind of frasing to use etc. It is especially important in etudes - because they are meant to learn us specific technique - that’s why you should always follow the sheets transcription. After you have learned the notes and are comfortable with the piece - looking at the sheet is just a support and not a distraction. Playing a lot of pieces accumulates and evolves your set of skill over the time. If I for example go to preveuis pieces played couple a month ago - I can play them a lot better today and with ease. It is important to work on a piece with quality and not rush it. When you feel you can no longer do it any better at a current level, you go and pick another one. You can always go back and work on your previous pieces later on with your new set of skills (which I do).

    Omg this is funny and sad at the same time lol. Do u know how it may have happened? Was the bow to lose? To tight?

      It was fun 😅 My guess is that the small piece, which holds the hair, just got loose through all that daily tightening and loosening.

    Your tone is beautiful, I cannot believe you've only been playing for only 155 days. How much do you practice every day?

      Thank you so much! Around 2-4 hours per day, 6-7 days a week.

    You play very well!!! How much time do you put into practice and how many times a week? I am learning G the cello for fun and because I love the instrument but it so hard to find time to practice and it's a difficult instrument to learn. I'm starting to feel discouraged. 😂

      Thank you! Somewhere between 2-4 hours a day, 6-7 days a week. I hope you continue - even small amount of practice makes a difference.

    Wow, youre amazing, but what impresses me more is that youve had the courage to start learning an instrument when all i can think of is that its too late for me to do so, but you inspire me!

      I have a strong belief that you can learn anything you like at any age. In my case learning gives me a lot of joy and purpose in life. I think you should just jump into it and see what happens, because - why not? 😎
