2018 Yurok Brush Dance Demonstration (2)
This is the second part, after the heavy song, which is not to be recorded. The men jumping centre are mimicking Seygep (coyote), who jumped centre in the first Brush Dance. The men singing mimic the crying sounds of the various animals in the first brush dance, and all dancers wear things from the first dancing animals on their regalia. Please do not sing along; these songs are held by the souls of the singers, and singing their songs is considered to be taking part of their soul away. If you have questions, please comment!

I stopped recording due to the upcoming heavy song, the prayer song, which one is not permitted to film. Please do not sing along.

So, the two people dancing in the centre are my Yurok language teacher, Mr. Gensaw, and his son. Like I stated previously, the brush Dance is meant to heal a sick child. Btw, I am not Yurok (I'm half Welsh and half Tsalagi), but I'm taking a Yurok language class bc I live on the California coast and not the Midwest, so there's quite a lack of Tsalagi language classes. Yurok is really, really co...

This is a dance that is performed to heal a sick child. As Yurok stories say, the California Condor (prey-gon-eesh) was the first creature to really sing the song of a brush dance, and since he was crying over a sick and dying child, the wavering cry became a part of the song.

I really love that it is when they all seem to collectively move into the Spirit realm, in unison - that their dancing begins; definitely not "on queue" - a very noble and spiritual connection between themselves, each other and I'm thinking their ancestry. Moving to watch!

I was watching a video on the music of Avatar and got sent down a wonderful rabbit hole of music from all over the world. I just love this kind of thing - people coming together to create music and dance without any intentions to become famous or anything like that, but for the pure spiritual joy that comes from creating something.

Nice! This kind of dancing and song is really sacred (which is why I've got. Mixed feelings about it inspiring the soundtrack of a film often called out for being Not Super Great, tbh). And I watch Sideways a lot, and let me tell you, I was super surprised when I saw a video I'd taken of my teacher and fellow students, lol! If we weren't in quarantine, I'd love to show them.
