    I suspect that that lime has at least some cement in it whereas I believe Saint-Astier does not. Also it is preferably to drop down to a NHL 2 mix as this is more breathable and less brittle.

    Is Lime mortar appropriate for repointing a 1950s sandstone retaining wall (about 8 feet tall in the center, and tapering down to 3 feet on each side with the surrounding slope) in Pennsylvania? I haven’t had the failing mortar analyzed, and am not sure if Portland has been used in the construction. Any guidance you would offer is much appreciated.

    Brilliant. Thanks for that. I understand there is a preference for using hydraulic lime, not so easy to get and expensive, as opposed to Hydrated lime easily sourced in building merchants.

    Would a more accurate way, for the quantities if you have time, would be to weigh the sand and lime mortar? Eg mix 3:1 use 30kg sharp sand 10kg lime ?

    • @richfrench205
      @richfrench205 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sand weight will vary dependant on water content. Measuring by volume is more consistent than by weight.

    Hi, I live in a stone cottage in west wales (approx 200 years old) and it has a roughcast/pebbledash external render. How can I tell if the render is a breathable render or cement? Any advice or videos on this would be fantastic!

    Just 2.5 of builders sand, not any grit or granite flakes? Or would you substitute .5 sand for grit or granite chips?

    What is the difference between hydrated lime and hydraulic lime and what is the formulation of hydraulics lime

    • @brendanmurphy3233
      @brendanmurphy3233 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hydraulic lime has "impurities" from burnt clay that allow it to set without air (e.g. underwater). Natural Hydraulic Lime is made from burning limestone with clay impurities. (Artificial Hydraulic Lime is lime putty with "pozzolans" added, like fly ash, metastar, brick dust, or volcanic ash (used by the Romans).) Hydraulic lime sets faster than pure lime putty, and is less breathable. NHL 2 is typically used for indoor work, NHL 3.5 for outdoor, and NHL 5 for very exposed locations (and things like limecrete floors). Hydrated lime is powdered lime typically used as a plasticiser for sand and cement render. You can mix hydrated lime with water and chemically it is the same as lime putty, but it isn't as nice to work with. Apparently, if you let it "mature" long enough, it is pretty good.

  • @philomena333

    All lime no matter which lime takes 29 days to cure, in cold, winter takes abit longer, hydrolic lime sets more if exposed to water like under bridges stuff used for etc, hydrated does not set well by it self quick unless its used in conjuction with pozzalons, which are like cement used in rome eyptain time, modern cwment is damaging to building insideor exterior, if cement blocks u can get away with it depends background but not great cement as it holds water freezes in winter then craks alot haurline craks water seeps in motar u got damp wet wall

    Been looking at lime mixes for a binder material, Sadly the NHL is excessive cost in the west coast area of the US. I've been looking hydrated lime with a Pozzolan additive to have a similar result that is affordable. Hopefully NHLs will become available locally to make them more attainable in the future.
