A look at my home recording studio setup, my essential pieces of gear and how it all comes together to get the sound I’ve been searching for. In the video I make mention of the monitors as being HS 6 but they are actually the HS 5 series. I have always called them 6s because of the size. Please excuse this correction! CAPI VP312 Pre Amp Complete Detailed Build Tutorial
มุมมอง 17K10 ปีที่แล้ว
Complete building tutorial for the CAPI VP312 Standard VPR 500 series preamp kit. I really love CAPI Preamps and I wanted to help some new guys with a detailed set of instructions for the assembly of these preamps. This video keeps you from having to compile information from a bunch of different places in order to build these!
In all my years watching these tutorials, you are the ONLY person who suggests attaching the grnd wire from jack, onto a wood screw in the body. I've always wondered why that is not common practice. So I doubted and avoided doing that. But that is changed. I'm in. One less on the pot. In fact, I'm tempted to place a 2nd screw strategically and eliminate using back of pot altogether. I thank you for this video!! I learned.
ALWAYS discharge capacitors. Whether the amp has been on recently or has been unplugged for a week. Any time you're in there unplug and discharge. This is a habit you want to have.
Great vid. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome video, my friend! Very informative and to the point. Thank you.
This is a really great video. Thank you for putting it together. For those that haven’t watched yet, be sure to watch it in full. Very important safety regarding the caps later in the video.

Man what a great video!!!!!!
You're right - don't discharge high voltage caps with a screwdriver! Besides being dangerous, the heavy current transient can damage the cap(s). Best to use a purpose-designed discharge tool.
Awesome video, thanks for posting!
mine keeps saying can’t playback video what am i doing wrong?
This popped up on my feed again... So I watched it again. So much great advice here. I'm sure I'll watch it again for the specifics as I set up my more humble home studio. Thanks for your time explaining your choices. So much better than most of the other studio tours that have wasted a lot of my time.
@@rjb7569 thanks so much! I sincerely appreciate that comment and I’m glad you got something out of it!
Can't you just plug your guitar cable in, and then when it's off strum until the sound stops?
That’s a theory and some people say that can work but I would never try that and bet my life on it. Always test, discharge and read the caps to be sure!
Output not input
your a joke
Thanks
I would love more details on your amplifier chassis stand. It looks like a fantastic design.
Have you tried using the ASP880 as a converter with the outboard pre's? I''d love to see a shootout between the ASP880 and the DP88 both as standalone and as converters for the Capi :)
Grounding that tab to the top looks kind of, uh, well, ‘less than optimal’.
I like to turn my jack around 180° because then you have ‘hot’ on the left, ‘cold’ on the right. (Which, when you add “shit flows down” to that last statement it tells you all that you need to know about plumbing.) But seriously then you have the hot wires on one side and the ground wires on the other side.
SRV would run his amps super hot!!! Awesome video learned a lot.
Ps3 sw was really nice
Excellent video
I also play Crush. A CHAMELEON 6 piece beautiful white on white set. Absolutely love them. Please Crush make a come back soon.
Remo power stroke black dot sounded best to me!
Thanks Roy this video has helped me more than any other. I have 2 (now 1) P basses to wire up and the one I completed using this video works great! Blessings my friend. 🎉
Very helpful thanks
Aiming for "As polished and radio-ready as possible" is a mark of sheer insecurity, a NEED for approval. This isn't rocket science. Aim for beauty and empathy; it's all the music can do , at best, anyway....polishing/varnishing a masterpiece is the easiest part.
And you can do a lot better than an LA-610 in the tube-pre dept. I have one and it's very good, but far from as good as it gets. Fearn and Coil are just two that are in a different galaxy from UA.
Quick question, what is the capacitor for?
@@IRL_Official the capacitor is what allows you to have a tone knob. It’s responsible for being able to roll off the treble. Without the capacitor the tone knob wouldn’t have that effect.
A guitar usually only has an jack, as it outputs the guitar signal .....
I got the app and all of the files are coming up. But when I click on them it is saying "cannot play this video" and is not giving me the option to download it to the device. Do you know why that could be? Thank you for the information!
Sorry but your soldering technique is horrible. You will not pass FAA certification. 😂
What hertz did you tune both heads to? Sounds good.
This is easily the best video I’ve found about learning how to actually solder, specifically for a Strat. Also a super helpful explanation of what every pot, and capacitor does. Thank you for this!
Can the wire going to the claw be held in with a small self tapping screw? Can the other grounding screw that is inside the control cavity be located in the trem cavity instead?
“I don’t need to chase gear, everything sounds amazing as it is” I needed to hear that. I’m sitting back down and only allow myself to buy more gear if I can specifically say what I’m missing. If I can’t get the sound I want to get out of what I have - or if I get to a point where I notice I put the same compressor on the same thing for every session. Chasing gear is a distraction 🐥
Now I finished watching and I suddenly want to buy a patch bay and a lunchbox 😂
I have a lunchbox and want to connect it to my Presonus AR16c, I have bought insert cables from jack to xlr, what do I do now?
Force 1 coated 12:10 SK1 coated 13:09 SK1 modern vintage 13:38
Bass traps supposed to be much thicker. What material is this?
brilliant video explain to all very clearly and provided me with everything i needed to carry out my own repairs, Thank You!
this was by far one of the best wiring/soldering videos I have found so far.
Watching this and realised I already commented on this vid 7 years ago .
WHAT'S THE TENSION?? WHAT TYPE OF TUNING LOW, MID, OR HIGH?? WHAT'S THE RESO SKIN??? NOT GOOD AT ALL
@@freedomgardens5296 listen to the video. Absolutely all of that is mentioned.
I guess i'm spouled my voypke of my bases basses have spraig orange drops ... like the tone from the 0.47 paper and oils ... great video
Why didn't you connect all your CAPIs through ADC/ D SUB Line inputs of the ASP880? Unlike the TRS line inputs, these will bypass all the circuitry and get you straight to the converters. This way you could actually switch between the ASP or external pres via the ADC button on the front, and you would keep the same conversion accross
I’m bypassing all of the circuitry in the same way through the dp88. Direct to converter also
Dude, your preamp rig is basically exactly what I'm going for rn. I just bought a wa73, then slurged on a stereo pair of API 312's, and I've owned a an LA610 before and know they're killer tube vibes- so my goal is to have the neve clone for vocals, the api's for guitar and drums, and the la610 for bass or really just anything I feel like because it's so F good on anything.
Quick question: In around 36:30 you move to the testing phase but I did not find the p jack soldering and tremolo grounding phase, can you please clarify? Also in that phase you say we should twist the black and white wires (plural) together but according to my understanding the souls be one white wire and one black wire remaining. And those souls go to the jack Thanks ❤
Thank you for taking the time making this video, it was most informative!
Excellent! Thanks for the video. One question; How you control/determine/adjust the sound of something (like drums, for example) recorded, within that same room situation? I mean we cannot hear the separate sound from the actual drums vs the recorded sound on the speakers or headphones.
