While it is a nice decorative finish, shou sugi ban isn't very useful as a preservative technique. Modern tools and coatings just make it obsolete.

Don't Have Cream For Your Coffee? Try Flour!
Hi Joe! Sure it is not a juniper?
I'm sure the fact that all these big name Democrats have been sending checks to Merchan's daughter has nothing to do with this case. Over 2 million dollars sent to her home in Virginia, not her business, but her home. Checks from Schumer, Hochul, Schiff, Jeffries, Goldman, etc. I'm sure it is just a coincidence that she is the Judges daughter.
Lol this guy is an idiot.
Traditions Adobe construction has given society many historic Adobe buildings. So though you raise some good points you fail to mention actual building methods. I ve lived in Adobe for 47 years. Wouldn't want anything else
Thank you for sharing information based on what you’ve experienced, and not claiming to be a teacher based on what you just learned online, and haven’t tested yet. There’s a lot of those kind of videos on TH-cam. I think they mean well, but they end up doing more harm than good. Your rabbits look very healthy and happy. I raised rabbits in hutches in the past, and actually had a lot of success with them. My reasons for wanting to start a colony this time around are mostly based on the quality of life for the rabbits. They are extremely social creatures, and keeping them in hutches is cruel. I’m not judging people for it, I did it because I didn’t know better. Live and learn
Hey Mate, what do you think of strawbale homes?
The real advantage to a lot of these alternative building ideas is that a small group of people can build some kind of shelter over a period of time for nearly free.
You could always keep thinking about it. If it was six months ago, your dome could be done and you would be healthier and more fit.
Yeah you skimmed over alot of the benefits of earth bag building. Guys dont listen to someone like this. No experience and big opinions. I have built with earthbags, adobe, wood, pretty much any thing you can think of other than hempcrete. Earthbag building is affordable, storm proof, earthquake proof, bulletproof and its easy for a normal person to safely build. Hes a typical city person with a limited knowledge of sustainable building. Idk why he even made the video if im being real with you. Its not accurate
Thanks for watching.
I do like the look. And lack of chemicals. But it is time consuming.
I did the siding of my house out of 1" pine boards. Nice thick layer of char. The technique is fantastic.
Dissolve 100% silicone bathroom caulk into mineral spirits. It seals the grain from water, bugs, everything. The only downside is it can't be painted. You can waterproof anything that isn't damaged by mineral spirits. None of us will live long enough to know how long the preservation will last.
I agree with silicone. The exterior grade type is very durable. Sometimes it won't come off even if you want it to.
@@offgridsolitude That's the only downside. It can never be painted.
I disagree, Using the proper wood and technique, it's as good a preservative and any modern alternative. It can last decades
You are most correct...Here is the inportant information to discuss and ask question about from someone that has been taught this traditionally in both Japan and several other cultures should you have questions... 焼杉 - Yakesugi - (sometimes written improperly: 焼き杉) grilled cedar also called: “Shou-sugi-ban” erroneously by Europeans and those in North America who don't know what the hell they are talking about is an ancient charing method used to not only color wood but to preserve wood as well... There is the 炭付 (Sumi-tsuki) “with charcoal” heavy burn method, or the 磨き (Migaki) (焼杉美杉 Yakesugi Misugi) “polishing” smoothed out method...バーナー焼き Bānā-yaki “burner - “flame painting” method....鰐 (Wani) “crocodile” effect…These charring effects are found in several wood cultures…焼or “yaki” means burnt, fried, grilled, heat-treated, etc. and is a general descriptive term. 「杉」or “sugi” means cypress as in Cryptomeria japonica, also called Japanese Cedar in the West.「板」or “ita” means plank or board. So「焼杉板」or “yakisugi-ita” translates into English as “heat-treated cypress board”, “burnt cedar plank”, etc….” "Charing" methods on the other hand can be found in many ancient wood cultures and have a plethora of uses besides just wood preservation. Yakesugi, and those related modalities are aimed at a specific species of tree found mostly in Asia…
@@JayCWhiteCloud Many people seem to think you can simply take fire to any wood and you're set. The species is critically important, because the resin in each species is unique and will take on different properties when heat is applied. No two species react exactly the same with the application of heat/flame, which is why it often leads to failure. The process has been used for thousands of years and can't simply be dismissed out of hand by anyone who doesn't understand or follow the proper techniques.
@@Eweber007Your assessment is most correct…!!! I learned to char wood from my family members first who worked in the traditional folk styles of green woodworking and timber framing in the Ozarks where my mother's family is from. Later in Japan, and then other wood cultures… You have most correctly pointed out, as I tried in my first post that got blocked and/or removed, that you can’t really have a solid perspective or opinion of any value to share with others unless you really understand these traditional…and proven!!!... modalities and means of wood charing… Case in point, 焼杉 - Yakesugi, systems of charring is only meant for those species of cypress and similar woods found in the Nihon Rettō and Ryniku Archipelago region and its wood cultures… Again thank you for posting and I hope, for the sake of other readers who find this foolish video, our conversation is not removed. Editing and reducing this video would be a very beneficial thing for those actually trying to learn when and how charring is done, but to do that, the owner of this channel would have to accept learning the system first and effectively applying it to a given task…
Good info!
Shou Sugi Ban Is A Waste Of Time if it's done wrong*

But very informative and accurate
Not accurate at all...!!!...and full of misinformation about the method...
Bugs won’t eat it
Thanks for the video. I am coming into a similar life situation as you and have considered buying some desert land and building. I have looked at the earth bag home techniques and am impressed by these methods and what they accomplish. I've considered them. But I've also arrived at some of your same conclusions, it is hard work to build one of these earthbag homes. Not sure with my health I could accomplish it. It's possible, but it is definitely hard. Also this is the first video I've come across where the cons are talked about. Haven't seen that before. And people criticizing you for criticizing the building methods just because you "haven't done it before" really do not know what they are talking about.
In America it's mostly used for decoration not to preserve
I think so too. I just wanted to make sure everybody is on the same page. :-)
@@offgridsolitude Then if you don't "think so" why make a silly video that is full of misinformation and a false narrative on a subject you know little about?
@@Grauenwolf And that is what is inaccurate...Charring methods, regardless of the wood culture it come from, has two primary functions. In order of significance is wood preservation and the other is decorative. It is both and has been for millennia. I see way too many websites and videos…" explaining,"... charging methods without the presenters fully understanding, and certainly not able to teach these methods properly since they neither comprehend them nor the traditions behind them...as I explained in my post that has been blocked from view on this channel…but…I will post it again here and in my other response. We will see if this information is left up this time so folks can actually LEARN about these methods and ask proper questions… 焼杉 - Yakesugi - (sometimes written improperly: 焼き杉) grilled cedar also called: “Shou-sugi-ban” erroneously by Europeans and those in North America who don't know what the hell they are talking about is an ancient charing method used to not only color wood but to preserve wood as well... Sorry to see the damage. Good attitude keep working at it. It may have been an arizonado dust devil. I find that enclosing a building, closing all gaps, closing windows, blocking crawl space makes it more resilient to wind sneaking in or under causing lift ... I went with 3 ft deep holes for posts.. 4x4s and concrete.
Glad they extended your permit. Things are looking good. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks!
You seriously shouldnt make videos on things you havent done. Spreading other peoples information on something you dont have experience in is miss information. You cant claim to know anything about the cons of something you've never done.
Nice!
"A lot of work" but remember that some people doing building work every day as full time job and they don't even have own house
Yep, spring is the windy season for sure. Those dustdevils come out of nowhere and will lift things straight up into the air.
Im learning that the hard way.
That is pretty scary i don't want that in my house

It is good for people to assume certain things just by watching videos, reading or doing some basic research. But, is not responsible to bring up information about building techniques that one doesn't have any experience whatsoever or any expertise. Thanks for your input, but to be honest, first try it and then dismiss it.
This drives me crazy. People making videos on the cons of something they never did themselves in essence regurgitating what they read from other people. There is a reason things built this way from the past are still standing today while everything we build today will vanish with no trace in the future.
i love your show i want to be all nuts with a goat friend loving me when I'm trying to make a video (you live a good life bro) 💕💕🤗
I think the issue some people have is what does it matter. “Why should I care” to them people I say. Food is medicine. It’s not just something you do for pleasure only. Its purpose is to give you vitamins and nutrients. The higher quality the more of this it contains. Your body needs key minerals and nutrients to repair and maintain itself properly. A lot of Farms lands have been depleted of minerals. The big farmers mostly care about producing volume. The opposite of quality over quantity. There are studies showing this. So unfortunately even two vegetables side by side wouldn’t be the same if grown in different places. I’ve heard that the reason a lot of people are always hungry even though they eat a lot is because their body needs real food. And it doesn’t get this with junk food. So it tells them to keep eating. I’m not sure how true this is though. But it sounds very possible. In all adds up. You might be ok living off of twinkles and honey buns for a while. But it’s damaging you slowly. One day you’ll wake up sick wondering where it went wrong.
More work yes ,otherwise this is clueless B crap
Keep up the good work! Loving the videos.
She's not protecting genetic stock for breeding. She killed it because it lacked utility for her. It wouldn't hunt properly and, because she didn't secure her animal, it cost her money and provided a moment of embarrassment for her. So she "hated it" (to use her words) and couldn't be bothered with any number of more humane choices that were available to her for a dog that wasn't properly out of its puppy stage. I grew up in the country. I understand the sometimes hard realities of that life and the limitations that can attend it. None of those were hers. It wasn't excusable or funny. It was a pointless, cruel act by a woman in need of empathy and humanity.
Freaking fool
She did not train the dog. The dog was young. We grew up on the farm.
Well golly. Who would have thought a dog being trained with a shock collar would become aggressive? Shock collars are used by people who are either too lazy or too goddamn stupid to know how to properly train an animal. Gov Gnome should be prosecuted for animal abuse and her animals confiscated.
Tell me you know nothing about economics without telling me.
Yeah, no. See, you don't find expensive (between $800-$1,200 PER PUP), intentionally-bred wirehaired pointers on a FARM. And you definitely don't shoot them in the face for attacking a chicken when they're literally BRED to hunt pheasant. You TRAIN them. This is not hard, and it's not because "normies" don't understand farms.
she could have given the dog to someone who was not a breeder for free and suggested the dog be fixed
Your making assumptions pal.
She wasn't a breeder. Your story doesn't track.
You're making excuses for her. She said she "hated" the dog. That's an emotional reaction, not a cool-headed breeder culling reaction. She wanted to control the puppy. She didn't know how to handle the puppy (which was acting like a puppy), so she killed it. She wanted to control the goat. She didn't know how to handle the goat (which was behaving like a goat), so she killed it. Psychologically, Kristi Noem was behaving like a far-right MAGA Republican---she wants to control everything, doesn't know how to handle anything, so she destroys it.
You are correct, she should have kept that to herself, but this shows you she is not a smart politician or leader. It also shows her callous side of how she treats living beings, so in a way she did us all a favor in mentioning this now. Stick a fork in her, she is done.
I didn't realize farmers where experts in genetics.
What a poser you are...
Right , wrong or indifferent, I agree that it was a mistake to bring it up. Don’t go kicking over a cow patty to make it stink! This is an un-fortunate turn for her. She ruined all chance at VP and the country has lost a good option. I do think her governorship will survive this and hope she continues on there.
Listen, I lived in very rural US for many years, and I understand what you are saying, sometimes decisions need to be made. I will tell you that not all producers have the same attitude you have, either. A friends father, whos family had been raising cows for generations, became a vegetarian when his father killed his pet cow. He still raised cattle, but he never ate beef again. You can try to sugar coat it with "well, thats just the way it is on rural farms", I disagree, not all people have that attitude and are still quite successful, imagine that? If she had been a veterinarian and had made a diagnosis that supported those actions, that would be a different story as well. Simply, no humanity.
I'm 100% conservative, but our opinions vary greatly. She takes a puppy out on a bird hunt, then is surprised when it escapes her truck to go and kill what else, a bird!! She's a tool and a complete pos.
Bottom line is, she's done.
Dogs are pets, not farm animals. You're full of shit.
WHY ARE THERE SO MANY NEGATIVE POSTS, BUT I DON'T SEE ANY "THUMBS DOWN" FOR THIS IDIOT? 😮
