Ray & Carla with Penny and Roxi feature videos on the ruins and secret places of the Isle of Man, with music from local artists and acknowledged in the description. Using a gimbal with a Panasonic G9, rode mikes, and adobe software music from Mactullagh Vannin and other manx musicians, who very kindly have allowed me to use their songs, great tunes of my homeland, check them out.
Ray & Carla, Isle of Man, Ballaholly, Tholtans
One of our more poignant videos, which led us to actually meet folks who lived in one of the Tholtans, a first for both of us, fascinating to hear about the life and hardtimes past. So sit awhile and drift back into our past, and revel in their memories with us.
Old photos, ruins, and family tales, finally we end up in Jurby graveyard and church where Carla reads a letter from a Jurby man who took part in the second world war, which moved both of us to tears, no more needs to be said.

One of a lovely treks to the beautiful sounding remote Dreem Beary, and our discovery's on the way. Sited high in the Greeba hills with views to kill for, at one time a busy little track with people horses sheep and cattle passing their door everyday, its other name is Wood's Croft after a shop proprieter from Peel allegedly, but I like its Manx name.

One of our old mine workings and its history, abandoned many years ago, we use our imagination and ideas to visualise life here, its workings, its meandering water channel, the reservoir, and some of the folks and tragedies that happened in those years of toil

We walk the windy corner track, spotting ruins in every direction, onwards towards Laxey, stopping half way down to visit with permission the ruins above Glen Roy mines. It was a crisp winters day, with breath hanging in the air, dogs at our heels, no animals to worry, and the world at our feet, bliss absolute bliss, chat and walk with us whilst we sit and snack whilst looking at wonder on wher...

We usually do a few shack chats every year, discussing our thoughts, dreams and forthcoming walks and and exploring our wonderful heritage, so sit down with us grab a cuppa, and find out what our plans will be for 2024. Covid now seems like a distant problem, with normal illnesses returning colds flu and other ailments, the only lingering issues now seem to be mysterious after effects of the va...

A ruin neither of us have ever seen, or few other people too, we were so lucky to be able to visit and record our day on "The Witches Hill", discovering a spring a hidden home of the past, a long since disused reservoir, some farm buildings that have not changed for centuries, and views to die for. What a day we had the air was still and clear we could see for miles, the patchwork of fields and...

A lovely walk and discovery of a little known ruin with its rich history and signs of bygone use, the fungii in splendid colour, the rabbits and hares enjoying the late winter sun, the disused well, the old wooden trough, the ancient keeil, and so much more, it's on private land but permission was asked for and granted, one of our more amazing walks, and finished of with our usual chat and Carl...

A strenuous walk to one of our remotest tholtan, tiring and rewarding at the same time, quite a lot of the old machinery remain with an amazing amount of old buildings just as they were left, abandoned in the 1930's after which it fell into disrepair the original inhabitants moving down the valley, it was home to the famous Cowley family one of the Islands leading figures in Manx politics, Deem...

This ruin lies close to the Rocky road of Archallagan, abandoned in the 1960's it was the family home of one of the Islands leading farming families, its on private land folks permission was given, and my thanks to Peter, Butch and Danny for help and information, shorter than our usual videos but still important to capture and record, it was about 35 acres split into 14 little fields, today it ...

In 1872 John Kewish got into an argument with his father and tragically his father was killed, and for his crime he was executed. This little film is about the place he lived, how they survived, walking the well trodden paths the families would have used daily, and a walk to the Cluggitt falls one of the longest drops in the Island so steep even sheep struggle for a foothold. It was a sobering ...

A short film about collecting and storing small hay bales, and my memories and photos from my fathers farm in the 1970's, when i had hair, and my world lay at my feet and over the years no matter what the weather we always managed with the gods help to gather enough food and bedding to see us through each year, I've seen us collecting stooks and bales at the same time, anxiously looking at the ...

A lovely walk through the past following the steps of the Barker family and their walk to the mines looking for treasure, pushing the family pram, and the adventures they enjoyed while their father dug for lead and silver in the spoil hills left by the old miners of the 1870's. Fantastic Thank you, we have recently learnt that James Wood from Wood's Croft was our great great grand father 🥰 Chilly place to live up there!! JANE, JACQUELINE & JOE WOOD.
Back in the day late 60s I used to go to that sweet shop I lived just over the road from it .. and the path your walking down there used to be an old building with no roof just passed the white van you walk pass.. if you carry on down the path does it bring you out at Groves Rd or the sports centre
Yes it does to groves road.
Had a few hotdogs at the front of the Chalet, when stuck in all day during TT, a few years ago ,maybe 12 or so,A special spot, enjoy all you twos content, ive had over 40 holidays to the Island.
Go on it's an easy climb I used to run up and down there, it's much grassier now as well!
I used too as well Ian as they say the spirit these days is willing but the old body thinks not.
Thank you once again. We are learning about so many new places to explore. I Loved the "Mlk lady" video. I worked with a lovely coleague who lent me the Manx Murders book and seeing you explore the paths was awsome. That one of the last man executed was very good. Very sad but very intersesting. Thanks you two
Thank you for commenting keep watching
👍😎
Used to be one of our favourite walks. The small collection of buildings along the beautiful winding stream is so picturesque. The whole valley is glorious. The last time we went, the collapsed walls on the worst damaged buildings were being rebuilt. Two things to be aware of:- Don’t go there in horsefly season, July/august. They will attack in hordes. The other problem is ticks. Check your dogs for them as they too are numerous in tall grass.
Hello Ray I find your video very interesting this is the place where my great great grandmother was born in 1854 . CATHERINE KANEEN daughter of John Kaneen and Margaret Cain , i have been to this place where she was born and found it an interesting place , i met and got permission from the farmer and his wife, to visit the ruin, fascinating place.
Barny spot when I visited but winters would be harsh the garden is now covered with trees
I used to love walking through Cringle when I lived on the. IOM for a few yrs. The place looks like the fairies live there. Any chance you are going to visit the ancient burial grounds across the island?
It’s still magical today
Only just discovered your channel.. Great viewing.. Got to catch up with your other vids <3
It’ll keep u busy over the winter months We’re currently watching the latest called Dreem Beary
Only just found your videos. So interesting. The stove was cast by J Clague & Son. A Google search will tell you about them in the early 20th century
Thank you for watching and comments
Beautiful vid guys.
Thank you for the comments and watching we’ve loads planned for the future too
I wish the projects every success. The landscape is really beautiful, I wonder if wine would grow well. This is what I would :) to grow. Many greetings from the Harz Mountains in Germany.
Good to hear from the Harz mountains sounds sublime Ray
Amazing
So lucky to live where we do
Great video, such a beautiful landscape. I live in Germany in the Harz Mountains, but I find your landscape simply fascinating. Thank you for your videos Best regards from Germany :)
Well thank you Germany Harz sounds amazing too
I walked from Stoney Mountain in October 2022, and it was a slippery but good trek. I really appreciate the info from you both. Keep up the good work 🙌
Thank you Liam we love doing it
Thanks for the video you two. I finished reading Manx Murders a few weeks ago and it was very interesting to see the houses and hear your comments.
Glad u enjoyed it we have many more ventures planned
Thank you - so beautiful. I like to think my great-grandmother, who left the island in about 1840 & emigrated to Australia in 1857, knew about the well which they say has been there since the 5th century in the time of St Maughold. Cheers.
The water really did taste sweet
Thank you for these wonderful videos. My ancestry is from Isle of Man (Maughold) though I've never visited and not likely to. Wonderful to learn about the ancestral home. I feel a deep connection. (Great to hear you enjoyed your Reiki experience!)
We plan to keep our little films going as long as life let us
Great video so imformative, I have walked most of the hills up north over the last 50 years and like you enjoyed the peace and quiet far from the drone of noise from everyday life.
We also love the space and tranquility thank you for watching
I couldn't catch everything you were saying, so I may have missed you saying what you plant there?
It was being reseeded from memory
Great video again .. is that track at the beginning the one the come down from windy corner?
Yes it’s stony but not muddy
Before the chapel was knocked down & the pipeline put in around 2002/03 the only water supply we had to Little London Farm came from a 1inch pipe just below the mill which was free flowing & held down by a big stone. This worked well until the river was in full spurt when it would come adrift, often times we had to wade into the water to replace the hose/pipe (we did have a water purification pump in the house, but this only cleaned the water for one tap in the kitchen) :)
Think it’s still there the hosepipe anyway
Looking forward to watching your videos in 2024 and even visiting some of the places you have been to (where permitted) in our first full year living on the island. Just got to decide where to visit first!
Do them all they all have something to offer
Sinnon. Sinnan old norse - notice. Care about something. Other meanings usage.
Didn’t know this again great reply
Enjoyed the vid and the one re' Ballacannel Glen Rushen used to wander around there some yrs ago. Things change. Hopefully you'll make more vids of old places there's plenty of old houses about. In the 50s my mother would say " I knew the woman who lived there Ballaleysen Ronague, a few yrs ago the W gable end fell down. Ballaleysen, the place of the son of Lesly. Ballalawson, the place of the son of Law. Law is from the viking period. Another place the walls of which are now down located at the W side of Jurby airport she knew the woman who lived there. Mother was brought up in the farm to the S, West Nappin the Kneals had the farm at the time 1920s + . Seemed odd at the time that she told me that she knew the poeple who lived in an empty house. In case you don't know of: Cecil Mcfee MHK, John Quiliiam - radio in the 60s/70s. I think John was Fred's brother brought up in Ronague. Cecil talked of the tholtan now part of the field wall at Poolvaish. Gahelen Farm John and Sage Kinvig the tholtan had a big spar stone built into the corner wall, some of the small sheds were still standing in the late 90s. 1868 to 1870 survey IOM shows tholtans etc. maps.nls.uk/os/6inch-england-and-wales/isle_of_man.html Sheet X11 is Glen Rushen does show buildings and a spring about where Ballacannel is. Can zoom in/out image.
Great info Frank thank you for adding the history
Lovely video visiting old lost Manx places . lovely banter between you both . Thank you
Thank you for getting in touch keep watching
I loved working near those Tholtans. I remember when I started at Ballamanaugh there was still most of a roof on the upper house. If I remember right where were remains of a building in the field that is between the stream and the bottom of plantation.
Thanks for getting in touch and adding to our story Ray
its a brutal climb to the top. the views are amazing though. i live in st johns. very friendly village
It is indeed breathing was tested at the top
Stunning thanks for sharing
You’re welcome Jessica
Nice r elaxing video, travelled to the island for 30 years as a salesman. Only last year after retiring did i get to visit as an actual holiday. Met many nice people at Feltons, Ramsey, Faulkners, Bobby Sadlers, Whittakers, Cuplas, the old Douglas Steam, etc. Usually stayed at the Welbeck, but once at Laxey. Your accents remind me of happier days thanks.
Glad we’ve stirred your memories if u r back sometime let us know Ray
@raykelly5625 will do thanks, keep doing the old buildings...
Stunning lived here all my life but rarely saw these wonderful places now back etc won't let me so very grateful this and many more that are sharing thank youx😄
Glad you enjoyed our wanderings
I love these videos. I loved on the island for 2 1/2 yrs until Covid and I really miss the place and people 🙂
Thank you for commenting come back soon
My grandad was head gardener at Bishopscourt for 40 years and there used to be a boat on the lake manxsouvenirs.com/Ezra%20the%20gardener/images/boat%20on%20the%20lake%20(Smallwm).jpg
My uncles use to farm at Port Grennagh , the farm above the beach, spent many holidays on the farm in the early 70’s. They sold it and it was turned into a office development, and I guess the land was farmed by other around the area. This reminds me of this ! Still love hearing the Manx accent! I miss being home, after living in the UK for some 25 years!
It will always be home Kevin that will never change
Enjoyed this walk with you both. Views are incredible.
Thank you for commenting, we are so lucky
Another Great interesting and educational video, thank you both
Our pleasure, educational not had that compliment before
Really enjoyed taking this walk with you which brought back many happy memories. Coincidentally, the last time I walked up there I was in the company of Kenny Barker and Andy Quine around 1977. We took that route and then climbed the steep slope to the top of Slieau Freoaghane. Thanks to you and for Gerrys input to this fascinating story. I knew the Barker family well and spent many happy hours in their home in Kirk Michael. Charlie and Rita were always busy and on the go but always very welcoming when I called round. I feel very fortunate to have known the Barker family and to have so many happy memories of them. I admit, I spend too much time watching stuff on my phone sometimes but this was the best 58 minutes I’ve seen in a very long time. Thanks so much for putting this together and for sharing.
Aw your very welcome. Lovely to read that you knew them too and took the same route with Charlie.
Any books or websites detailing all our Manx mines? Also is the path upto Corrany mines Private? great video btw!
You can access lots of information online to do with mines also am sure theirs books too. Google may be the answer. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you, Most interesting!!.
Glad you enjoyed it
After watching some crazy stuff on TH-cam lately, i found this very therapeutic. Have been to the island over 80 times to see customers, but had little time to look round. Had my first holiday there last month, just a few days...popped into Feltons of Ramsey but didnt manage to get to Maughold on way back. Next time....
What country is this? what island please tell me
Isle of Man in the uk

Your channel is very interesting as I've never seen these places and I just live in Ramsey.!!
That was always our plan get ya boots in and explore it’s still a free space
is Claughbane private property or government owned ?
Government owned although its now farmed
Wow! Ray, thank you for sharing that beautiful video. My family and I holidayed in Ramsey annually since I was 4 years old in 1950. So may times we'd walked up to the Albert Tower I think my little legs couldn't go any further! Delightful to see the full curve of Ramsey Bay. I recall that my dad used to lead us on a regular pilgrimage to a run down small holding in Glen Aulden, occupied by a rather eccentric guy called I think "Bill Collins", who I suspect he knew from evenings spent in "The Saddle", long after I was put to bed! Happy days and simple pleasures. In later years, after I was married, both my parents and my wife and I had several lovely holidays on the island staying with a lovely lady called Anna Corlett who used to work in Arnolds Store. Sadly, I think the house is gone now, Ballamilghyn Villa up Baldhoon Road. It was quite an imposing sight as you passed through Laxey towards Ramsey. I stumbled upon the link to this video whilst Googling "Mike Quinne - Sunrise over Ramsey", which was tonight's Granada Weather picture! Took me to "Manx Photographers" Facebook Page, thanks to them for allowing "Non Facebookers" to view the lovely photography there.🥰
Thank you for getting in touch, i am a southside man, don't have any knowledge on the people you mentioned sadly, they sound like characters though. We have some fabulous snappers on the Island, and as you observed it is truly a lovely place to live Keep healthy Ray
When was a child in the 60s I went to Kewàigue school and after we had are dinner we would have turns to bring the slops in a bucket to Middle farm for the pigs bring back the 60s 70s 80 s. and possibly the 90s. As I find it hard to live in the hell we live in now rant. Lovely places you go to been to some of them can not beat to get out and about keep up the good work.Geoff
