Resonances (2024) for Orchestra by Catherine Fields- Peter Wilson and the WSO
This piece is a dialogue between things past and present. Though the tonal and textural language of Resonances is very much in the modern idiom, its motives are derived from Bach’s choral Herzlich lieb hab’ ich dich, O Herr. For example, the first motive played by the piano, vibraphone, and harp (F, C, D, A) is a transformation of the first four notes of the chorale’s bass line (Eb, Bb, C, G). A six-note motive from the tenor line becomes a recurring melodic figure, and the descending scale in the soprano line is scattered through the piece in varied permutations. Resonances culminates with an intimate quotation of the chorale played by a string quartet nestled within the orchestra, a reminder that the past is constantly being woven into the fabric of the present. It is something alive and tangible, sometimes unrecognizable, that colors and suffuses everything that we do.
