Specialized Haul LT E-Bike Review
We tested the Haul LT over a few months, using it for school drop-offs, grocery runs and more. Specialized is a brand that knows how to design a bike from the ground up. While it isn’t necessarily known for its commuter and cargo offerings, that’s starting to change. Like the ST version, the Haul LT does a lot very well, making it a viable car replacement for many people.
In this video we will walk you through what we like about it and where it falls short.

I rode my Priority Current e-bike from Seattle to Portland - 215 miles
มุมมอง 13Kปีที่แล้ว
Can a commuter e-bike handle a 200 mile ride from Seattle to Portland? That was the question that started this experiment. Every July for the past 44 years, Cascade has hosted their annual Seattle to Portland (STP) ride. Over the course of two days, thousands of people ride their bikes along the 206 mile route. I was excited to join in on this Northwest tradition and tackle the 44th edition of ...

My Upway Experience: The Hassle-Free Way to Buy a Refurbished E-Bike
Zero suspension, and a 20 mi realistic range with the European 250 watt restriction... For $7,000... None of that math works for me.
Way overpriced. I have one. Would rather have a car and be stuck in traffic. Ecofashism is getting out of hand. I'm not that old, this thing is literally 10x the price of my first car, that was admittedly a piece of shit, but I sill loved it.
Where do yall keep it? Do you need to have a garage?
We used to keep it in our garage, but we moved and keep it outside in our back driveway. I installed an ABUS cement anchor and use a big chain to lock it. I also use their storage cover to keep the elements off of it. Not as nice as a garage, but still works ok.
what do you think the size of rider that 350w motor could handle? say 150lb, 200lb, 250lb, 300lb rider?
Depends on whether you are hitting steep hills or not. I'm 185 and it struggles on bigger hills, but good on the flats. Starting around 250lbs, I bet a rider would probably start to notice slower acceleration on the flats. And the climbs would be even worse.
i was looking at the Basalt ST 2.0 so I wonder how much they upgraded.
upgraded display that is detachable which is a theft deterrent since you cant operate the bike with out the display. Also turn signal lights on the back.
Ion no why you need a dual battery upgrade when you can just buy a spare battery for $500 and take it with you. I got two spares for $600 when my bike's manufacturer was having a sale.
Nice review. I still prefer their older model with larger front wheel.
Just test road this bike today and I was really impressed. Based on the specs I wasn't expecting to like it as much as rhe reviews all seemed to, but it rode really nicely. Liked it more than the more expensive Cannondale Cargowagon Neo. Also test road the Radwagon 5 today and I was pretty impressed with that too. I liked the Haul better, but not sure I liked it $1,200 better...
Thanks for sharing your test ride experience!
Really good bike. I have a cube cargo. Very similar with suspension though. Only downside is steering. Sad all bikes have some downsides 😅 Urban arrow very stiff Cube cargo weird steering Omnium too small
Our company is a professional factory that produces electric vehicles, bicycles, and tricycles. We are a brand from China called CLAMBER. The product quality is very good and the price is very affordable. You can learn about it.
Good review
How tall are you? Do the tips of your feet hit the front wheel on turns?
I’m 6’2”. Didn’t have issues with feet hitting front wheel, but I keep the balls of my feet on the pedal. If you pedal with the middle of your foot on the pedal then you might, but that’s not a great way to pedal anyways
I will miss G&O family cycling.
Im starting to see many people on the ST snd LT on my commute to downtown SF. The price point is great considering everyone and their mother has a Tern GSD here or R & M load 60/75.
So you bought a cheap Amazon throttle and it works? I’ve heard that you need the OEM specialized one due to software or something. Which one did you get?
No, got the specialized one when it was on sale. Looks like it’s $34 right now: www.specialized.com/us/en/globe-throttle/p/220823
seems like the Lectric One would be a better bike for the price. what do you think?
I’m not a fan of the small frame size of Lectrics. The geometry gives the bike an awkward riding feel, partially due to my height of 6-2.
@@EBikeCommuting thank you
Bought one a couple of weeks ago. Kids love it, and I love it too. Feel a bit weird riding it around (and got one road rager for no apparent reason) but so much fun.
Thanks for sharing!
I have a Specialized Turbo Vado SL EQ 5.0. Like it but I've had 7 flat tires and would like a second buck up bike. Im wondering whether this would fit the bill. Any recommendations?
The current is a great bike and would feel similar. Another brand I really like is EVELO, especially their Atlas model: th-cam.com/video/4jlVn-gle3E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iz2-bwFWmQNQY-YC
I bought a Ford Ranger for $100. Buddy got a v8 GMC for $500, twice. You should see the cargo capacity of those bad boys. And you save thousands of dollars. Way safer for the kids. Much further range. You could get all 3 of those trucks and still saves thousands compared to getting one of these bicycles.
Ok.
hi and thanks for your great reviews (&subscribed!). i am interested to purchase the EVELO Atlas but debating between the Priority Current and the EVELO Atlas = your top picks of 2023 &2024!. judging by your 2 videos, they seem similar/comparable in price/performance? can you please kindly indicate between the priority current and Atlas, which do you recommend to purchase ? thanks in advance!
They are both good bikes, but I prefer the Atlas. Smoother motor, an optional throttle and a more comfortable riding posture. And front suspension is a nice plus
@@EBikeCommuting many thanks for your response! appreciate it!
I don't like twisting my wrist to change gears.
Awesome review! Live in chicago and I haven’t seen many other people with the Haul LT. It's a lot of bike.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I’ve only seen one other person riding the LT here in Seattle
I've not had the pleasure of riding one of these myself, but the control unit located directly below the bottom bracket, with the unprotected wires and whatnot, seems like a design flaw just begging for you to bottom out and scuff and/or crush it. Am I missing something?
I hadn’t thought about that. I think since this is a big heavy cargo bike, they don’t expect you to be off-roading very much so the likelihood of bottoming out and scraping the bottom is pretty low. Typically with a control unit that low I worry more about water damage however, all the electronics and cords on the Haul seemed well secured and protected from the elements.
Strange decision indeed, especially since there is all the empty space there just above and behind the bottom bracket. I am sure it's the same thought process as the hard plastic fork panniers... a regular soft pannier would just compress instead of cracking.
Do you still happen to have the Via on hand to measure the width of the Kid & Cargo Carrier Hoop grab bars? Thank you!
Sorry, but I no longer have it. I’d reach out to Flyer customer support. They were very responsive to a of my inquiries when testing the bike.
It’s about 24 inches
General takeaway is ok for a first attempt, but way short on battery. Heck, the nearest Walmart is ~15 or 16 miles away (~32 mi round trip). Then again, I'm a utility rider. So getting from A to B with a possible load of cargo is top of my list.
Thanks, live in a hilly area so this was useful
The cost of this when compared to the cost of owning a car, is a drop in the bucket.
1000%
E-bike = motorcycle.
Very helpful thanks. Deciding between this, Swoop and upcoming Tern Quick Haul Long.
For a guy in the market for a cargo bike, this is a great piece of info. Well done.
Thanks glad you’ve found it helpful. Feel free to send me any specific questions and I’ll do my best to answer: tyler@ebikecommuting.com
I make decals, and i have cargo bikes, I can send you one from the Nederlands if you want.
Thanks for the data-based real-world test to show the capabilities! So many bigger channels reviewed this bike or other similar ones without describing % grade attempted, not to mention your important observation of the assist not kicking in below a certain cadence.
Glad you found it helpful!
that is a very short range my man
I don't believe the Enviolo gearing system is a limiting factor in this scenario. Instead, the 250-watt motor appears to be inadequate for the additional weight of this front-load cargo e-bike, particularly when tackling a steep 15-degree hill. Given the demands of such a situation, the motor struggles to provide sufficient power and torque. For the American market, where users often encounter varied and challenging terrains, Bosch should consider offering more robust motor options. This would ensure that riders have the necessary power and performance to handle heavier loads and steeper inclines with ease. Enhanced motor options would not only improve the usability of cargo e-bikes but also expand their appeal to a broader range of consumers who need reliable and efficient transportation solutions in diverse environments.
It was a very enjoyable bike! During a test ride event, I experienced this feature. While its gear shifting indeed felt a bit underpowered when climbing due to the wheel size limitations, on flat terrain, the gear shifting was remarkably agile and smooth. I practically forgot about shifting gears; the bike effortlessly maintained its pace, allowing me to focus solely on riding and pedaling.
In the past six months, I have test-ridden this bicycle, and I am amazed at the significant improvements, especially in the automatic gear shifting. In earlier versions, I thought it felt sluggish, but just two weeks ago, I noticed it has become much smoother. This company seems very proactive in conducting version updates, which I believe is exactly what we need, as we aim for our product to continuously offer new experiences.
Share my experience. there is new E-Shift firmware update, it can bring significant improvements to gear changes. Before ridding, you can check if the bikes FW is the latest or not. You could upgrade the latest FW from the Smalo plus app>> setting>>about>>system information. Version 1.012: Fixing the issue where intermediate gears are not displayed during continuous shifting (released date 2024.06.21) Version 1.014: Enhances shift sensitivity and supports manual continuous shifting. These updates provide smoother and more precise gear control, improving riding experience.
Good info. Ty
Looking for a great daily commuter and occasional bikepacking. Which one would you recommend: Priority current or Gazelle ultimate C380+ HMB?
They are both solid e-bikes, but the front suspension on the Ultimate might be nice on bumpier roads.
2 thousand for the dual battery setup is... well it's 4x the price listed on their website.
That price he quoted did sound incredibly expensive. Somebody somewhere is ripping people off.
@@tconnolly9820 100%, and you don't need to just hear something off like. the price is listen on the website.
Ah, the spoiled NW cyclists. If you were a cyclist in the SW you wouldn't leave your driveway without a complete flat repair system and the knowledge of how to use it. Also, you would have slime in your tires. Reason: goatheads.
At least it was the front tire that went flat. A huge piece of glass was really bad luck. Not only need a new tube but also a boot for the tire.
$8000 for this? Might as well get a cheap small car around $10,000 or used car for $2500.
Because it really is a car replacement vehicle. Cars are outrageously expensive these days. The average cost to own a car in the US is $12k per year. As Jason Slaughter pointed out a couple years ago, you could buy one of these, throw it in the trash a year later and buy a new one, and you'd still be spending less than owning a car. A lot less.
Not competitive anymore. Launched at $2,699. Way too expensive for build at $3,300. Sorry Priority.
No front suspension for that price? My God, why do you support such insane greed? I would never buy it.
Yeah I'm really curious where the hell the several thousands is going on this thing other than the middrive motor and frame and build. Surely there's big profit margin that fits a suspension system and more affordable dual battery upgrade not in the couple thousands. Might be charging up since they do corner this market in the US for now
$2-3k for the dual battery upgrade is indefensible and asinine. A 100 kWh Tesla battery is around $20k. That e-bike upgrade would be 1 kWh at the absolute most.
I want a bike like this but with no motor, just my legs' power alone.
@@justdev8965 You can buy a cargo bike without a motor. In my area it would never work due to heat and steep hills. Motor allows me to replace car trips.
Either he made a mistake himself in the price or somebody somewhere is really screwing people. It's not even half of that for a brand new 750 wh Bosch powertube.
I build it myself for 200€ or so. Bought a used battery, and bosch splitter cable including adapter cable (around 60€). You ruin your warranty as you have to remove the motor, to fit the cables. But not too difficult, its just a bit fiddly and u need a blowtorch or something
Ebike batteries are typically between .5 and .75 kWh.
Its not the ebike, it's the rider. Can a rider handle 215 miles? Like the saying. "In the MTB world, it is not the bike but a rider!" Great job. I will try next year.
i think the E part definitely enhances the riders endurance quite a bit. it would be an entirely different ride on a brakeless fixed gear.
A belt drive! If using an ordinary chain, you are able to use chain gears, which has much less friction than an internal gear system! I have had one bike using a belt, and I didn't like it! Eventually try a Danish built "Christiania Bike"? It is not as smooth looking, but it functions! Finn. Denmark
Thanks for the tip!
@@EBikeCommuting In Denmark we use as many bikes as in NL. for transport in local traffic, and we also have several types for transport of Children in front, as for heavy loads. The named Chr. and several other types. In the Good Old Days we had a much used, Commercial low transport, heavy load bike, named a "Long John", invented by a Danish Bike Mechanic! I think it is being still being produced?
Nice to see these Dutch build cargo bikes on the other side of the pond. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Great video, thanks! To avoid a flat tire on the next tour, I have a recommendation: Schwalbe Marathon plus - an unbreakable tire. I've been riding it on three wheels since 2005. I commute 20 miles a day for work plus the miles I cover in my free time or for shopping. The coat isn't cheap, but a shard of glass or similar won't interrupt a bike ride. Kind regards from Germany
Thanks for the advice!!
Very good review. Concise and to the point. No dumb music in the background. Awesome graphics. Thank you.
