As I grew up in the 80s, I remember that the left always championed free speech... to the point they would literally say "all speech is free speech. Hate speech is free speech." The ACLU, while pointing out that they found their views appalling, defended on numerous occasions the free speech rights of Neo Na@i organizations. When Tipper and AL went after musicians and started the PMRC, it was the first time that I took notice of the Democrat Party's hypocrisy. They all pointed fingers at the NeoCons, parroting slogans accusing *them* of being fascist, but the PMRC was what opened my eyes to their projection.

"Mother" became a "hit" after it aired on Beavis & Butthead. Yeah, I said it... Big whoop, wanna fight about it?

I always explained the PMRC to my friends as Political Mothers Requiring Censorship. I would tell them the real meaning and then use my version to tell how they got their hearing.

I was a junior in highschool when the Mother '93 was in rotation on MTV. Throughout all of highschool there were only a few songs that jumped genre and pretty much everyone liked. Things weren't like they are now, where the average highschool kid listens to everything, we were much more tribal and elitist. The characters working at the record shop in "High Fidelity" is a pretty good example of the attitude I'm speaking of. But oddly enough, Mother was one of those songs, the rest will be pretty obvious: Smells like teen spirit, Sober, etc.

First the PMRC was actually bipartisan. It was just Al Gore was standing up for what his wife spearheaded assisted by Susan Baker who is a Republican. This was supported by the Regan administration. This was more of a generational thing than it was a political partisan thing which was determining if music was considered adult content such as pornography, alcohol, and cigarettes. However, if Congress had passed this into law it would've sureidly been signed by Ronald Regan into law, but volunarly warning stickers were place by record companies before this could happen dodging a bulet.
