    Enjoyed the test. Just a few minor commemts, if I may. Question: #20: Suggested rephrasing -- "or YOU'LL miss the bus." #25: Answer A implies an intention of attending the party, based upon a possible FUTURE condition -- feeling well. Answer B states a committment (will go) to attend, even though he PRESENTLY does not feel well. So either answer.

    Question: #4, #14: Actually, the "yoo" and "yu" sounds made in pronouncing the vowel "u" are in fact vowel sounds. Each individual vowel could have differing pronunciations, depending on the word in which it is used. For example: "apple" and "able" "every" and "evening" "it" and "ice" "out" and "over" "under" and "unique" To further clarify, there are two types of vowel pronunciations: long vowels, and short vowels. In my above examples, the second word in the pair is the long vowel pronunciation, and the first word is the short vowel pronunciation. So in summary, if you're pronouncing a vowel, you're making a vowel sound.

    Question: #3: Answer A also considered synonymous. #5: If "doesn't he?" translates to "does he not?" might that be a correct answer to what the sentence intended? #15: As the sentence is phrased, answer A would be incorrect. The correct phrasing would be: "Hardly had the results been published when a controversy erupted." (Split infinitive perfectly proper in this case.) #29: The sentence subject is actually "the manager," which is singular, requiring a singular verb, in this case answer A. "Employees" is the object of a prepositional phrase, and as such plays no role in determing verb tense. #30: Answer A implies the resolution of the problem will occur prior to a deadline -- "in time" to resolve the problem. Answer D implies the problem will resolve itself eventually -- no sense of urgency implied. So, either answer. #38: As phrased, answers C and D would also be grammaticaly and logically correct. #40: Answer C also, past perfect. #54: Answer B also, if time rather than destination were the issue."

    Question: #7: As phrased, answer A would be logically correct -- plural subject/ plural verb. For answer B to be correct, the verb would need to read "seems," which as a singular verb would then agree with the singular subject "none." "Options," as the object of the prepositional phrase, of course would play no role in determining the verb tense. #17: The construction "couldn't been able" is of course grammatically and syntactically incorrect. Some correctly phrased options would be: "She couldn't have finished the race if she hadn't trained." Or "She wouldn't have been able to finish the race if she hadn't trained." #34: Answer B implies a more casual yet polite inquiry. Answer C implies one is seeking permission to call later. #60: Answer A implies a possibility. Answer A implies somewhat of an intention as well. #63: Answer A. I've never heard answer B used in this context.

  • @mikekurtz5868
    @mikekurtz5868 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Question: #10: I would disagree that the "yoo" pronunciation is not a vowel sound. The letter "u" is designated as a vowel in the English language simply because it is pronounced as a vowel. The explanation I would offer as to why "unique" is preceded by "a" rather than by "an," is that in the English language, there will always be exceptions to various rules. For example, we would say "an Englishman" -- "an" preceding a word beginning with a vowel -- , but we would say "a European." Two nouns beginning with the vowel "E," but each preceded by a different article. So, yes we have a rule exception, and yes, the letter "U" in "unique" is pronounced as a vowel. #21: "On the chair" would be used to describe a small, hard seat chair. "In the chair" would be used to describe to a larger, upholstered, more comfortable chair. So either answer could be correct. #47: Customarily, the expression used would be "at a hotel," referencing the building or facility itself, rather than the interior space.

    Question: #6: Minor point -- "AT this company" would be the preferred term. #12: A bit of a fine line here, perhaps. The OED states that "by" in this context means "on or before -- not later than." They add that " 'I will finish my work by next Friday' means 'I will finish my work at some point before Friday.' " The conclusion they reach is that "There seems to be no practical distinction between the meaning of the two sentences," referring to answer A or B. #14: "Will achieve her goals," future simple, also. See #12. #16: Answer C also, simple past. #23: Answers A and C both correct. You checked C as correct, but identified A in your explanation. #25: Not sure why answer D, past perfect, would not also work here. #39: You checked B as correct, but identified C in your explanation. #40: Answer D also, past perfect. #44: Answer A also, simple past, seems correct. #48: Answer D also, simple past. #55: Answer C also, simple past. #56: Answer A also, simple past.

    Question: #1: As phrased, answer D, simple past, also grammatically correct. #20: Answer C also correct, present simple. #24: Answer A also, present simple. #25: Answer B is incorrect. Answer A is correct. The sentence subject is of course "she," which is singular, and thus requires the singular verb "is." "Students" is the object of the prepositional phrase, and as such has no role in determining verb tense. "Was," the other singular verb choice, would also be a correct answer. Question #54 correctly follows this rule. #35: Answer B also. #40: Answer D also. #54: Answer D also -- singular, past tense. #62: Answer C also, past tense.

    Question: #34: The expression would be "on the team." #58: Answer A also correct, and more frequently used. #59: Answer C also. "I can't hear you. Could you please speak louder?" #69: Answer B is of course incorrect. Either rephrase to read "wall was," or "walls were." #70: "Go (not "goes") to the doctor." Per the OED "In the subjunctive mood, 'go' remains 'go' -- it doesn't change to 'goes'... meaning you would say 'I suggest that he go to the store.' instead of 'I suggest he goes to the store'."

    Question: #4: Absent any knowledge of the actual forecast, Answer B would imply a possibility, while Answer C would imply a probability. So either could be correct. #18: The customary phrasing would be "He might not have made..." #27: "Should have" more likely to be used in such contexts -- somewhat of an idiomatic expression. #30: Answer B would read "You mustn't not rely," a double negative -- just an editorial oversight. #31, #32: Answer A also; both indicate a possibility. #39: Another double negative. #40: Answer A also implies a possibility, in this context. #41, #47: Another double negative. Two correct choices: "You must not," or "You mustn't." #54: Double negative. Either "They must not," or "They mustn't."

    Question: #2: Yes, '"runs" would be correct present tense for a singular subject, just as "run" would be correct present tense for a plural subject. Therefore "run," present tense plural, Answer A, also correct. "The child runs happily in the park." "The children run happily in the park." Both correct. #13: Answer C also grammatically correct, simple past. #16: Yes, answer C is correct. However, the expression would be "... AT last night's [possessive] event." #30: As phrased, answer A also correct, present tense -- plural subject plural verb.

    Question: #16: Answer A also correct. Per the OED: " 'we start tomorrow' is a grammatically correct sentence, meaning that an activity or event will begin on the following day." Your answer to #18 would seem to confirm this: "travels" rather than "will travel." #19: Answer C also grammatically correct -- past perfect. #22: Punished for FOLLOWING the rules? #27: My choice: "will have left." See your answer to #29. #43: Answer D also. #48: Answer B also. See #16 comments. And your answer to #49. #51: Answer A also, future simple.

    Question; #2: Per the OED, " 'would stop' means the action would be halted or prevented in the future." Answer D seems to follow this rule. Answer B would be the past tense. #4: Answer B also, future simple. #6: Answer B also, past perfect.

    Question: #3: The "neither/nor" construction is of course correct. However, the rule is that in such constructions the verb must agree with the CLOSEST noun, which was not done here. For example: "Neither John nor his PARENTS WERE able to attend." Or "Neither his parents NOR JOHN WAS able to attend." #42: Answer B is correct. Per the OED: "If I were rich, I would travel the world." (present tense, hypothetical) and "If I had been rich, I would have traveled the world." (past tense, hypothetical) The test sentence use of "would have said" requires parallel use of "had been. For answer C to be correct, the sentence would have to read: "If I were you, I would say yes." #44: Answer A, simple past, and answer B, future simple, also correct. #59: Answer A is correct here, establishing a hypothetical. #78: If referring to a current desire, answer A. If referring to a past desire, answer C.

"The cake was eaten, and I saw her eat the cake." #20: Answer B also, to express not just a possibility (answer A), but a strong likelihood. #63: Answer C also, simple past. Answer A for testimony yet to be given -- future tense. #77: Answer B also. #83: Answer B is incorrect. Answer A is correct. The verb must agree with the subject "He" which is singular. "People" is instead the object of the prepositional phrase "of those people," and thus has no role in determining verb-tense.
