Learning from Print Typography with Diana Varma
First of all: It is PAINFULLY obvIous neither of you are Dyslexic. TL;DR - This video about opinions on dyslexic fonts by non-dyslexics is as tonedeaf as my opinion would be on wheelchair comfortability as a non-wheeled person. 1. The font you use for the video is the most difficult to read font I have seen in my life as a dyslexic person. Was that intentional or did you think dyslexic people wouldn't watch your video? 2. We don't care if you think our fonts are ugly. They help us perform daily tasks that neither of you have any problems with. 3. Instead of wasting time talking about your non-dyslexic preferences, maybe get some people with dyslexia and ask THEIR opinions because in this font discussion, your opinions don't mean much. Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion. Offering yours in this area which doesn't affect you, is unnecessary. 4. It would be more helpful if you made a video which discusses all fonts dyslexsics enjoy and comment on them without disparaging any of them. 5. Making a video about dyslexic fonts while at the same time doing everything possible in your video to have fonts they can't read well with is worthless. Open-Dyslexic and many other fonts have been a reading life-saver for me. I have been using them for years and you have no idea how helpful they are on a daily basis. In fact, I'm looking for a video to put one on my TV so I can read the captions better. Oliver - Your pretenceous distain of an Accessablity Option of which you will never use is not cool. Also... I wrote this using Open Dyslexic just for you - th-cam.com/video/1iHkqgKMBDc/w-d-xo.html
I always find it a little sad seeing AI used instead of actual artists, but the amount of difference your typography makes here is almost startling! I prefer Shader, but both options work well. Good video!
I get that. but it's always a matter of budget tbh. I would have loved to hire Oliver in the first place to make the cover art... but the podcast is a side project and I don't earn anything by making it.
@@david.wippel Thanks for the reply. As someone who likes to (try...) and make things I can definitely understand why you'd use AI to help you with a low/no budget project, but even when there's no profit involved it leaves a bad taste in my mouth for whatever reason. I much prefer seeing people make do with what they can make themselves, even if it's not great. Maybe I'm too strict about it, I'm not sure yet- I guess part of the issue is I'm concerned about AI diluting the emotional value of art. I do understand that nobody has lost out on an employment opportunity because of this, though, this is definitely different from a big company using AI instead of humans or something!
Great collection! I have a feeling that AR One Sans will be used in plenty of interesting places before we reach an AR-filled world. Its legibility and careful design is great for any place where we want text on an image.
I absolutely agree, Darshak! ☺️
Shader is dope! Bit sad you're obscuring so much of the hero figure though, miss those legs now
Maybe a bit smaller then in the next iteration 😉. But that’s up to David then.
nice content oli - shader wins, had to laugh on the modern weight joke xD - cheers aus wien, chriz
Yes!! We are so crushed, Chriz, aren’t we? 😜
Sir I want to start my typeface designing journey please can you make a video on how to become one. What should we learn 1st then 2nd. What are the basic fundamental principles should we learn and so other things Please help
Well, I’m a typographer and not a type designer. But a good starting point could be ilovetypography.com/academy/ or this lecture series from Type@Cooper th-cam.com/play/PL-WfLn9ekLD_SMrB7APoZCN_NAqF0x2Dm.html&si=PxhKrgFrEs5xbCSx
@ ❤️ Thanks sir 😊
Good stuff, I rarely see people actually talking about type like this. Just the right amount of info/length
Happy you liked it! I have plenty ofrecordings like these on Patreon. It was a spontaneous idea to try it out in public. Happy it could reach you then ☺️
while I personally like Push more, the 80s vibe is better transported when applying the Shader font. Nice job, Oliviero!
Thank you, Johannes. And that’s a fair assessment ☺️
Was fun watching. Thanks :-) I vote for Push
Yay! Happy you enjoyed it, Barbara! I also like Push a lot ⭐️.
Shader - hands down! Did you play with the glitch? While it's fun, I do find it hard to read.
I agree, but the glitch is more thought for animation.
Shader all the way! So cool! I wish it had more widths.
Yeah, you need to tell that to Dalton Maag 😉
Shader is noice!
It sure is!!
I got to that video after being really confused about open dyslexic. I'm dyslexic and I know that whenever I read I feel a heaviness at the back of my head. It doesn't do that with that font. I guess it's just that I have the exact problem they try to fix? I will do more tests now that I know fonts can help me. I'm surprised at the studies shown here. It doesn't reflect my experience.
Whatever font works for you is the best font. No matter what anyone else says or has an opinion about 😊!
you are too funny thanks for your help🤣
Any time! 😅
I feel like my third eye has been opened
Wow, that’s fantastic! Curious what you will see with it 🤩
Lucky i'm not the only one who has problems pronounsing "authenticity" xD
LOL, it’s hard, right? 😅
I think it has potential for e.g. an art gallery poster
It sure has! Salventius is just brilliant ☺️
Reminds me of the unilever logo.
Yeah, the complexity is definitely a connecting piece, even though it’s not a line-art drawing there and denser.
We need more fun typefaces like this.
Oh yes! 🙌
Your videos are always a lot of fun - you have great energy! Also that drop cap example was great!
Awwww 🥹, that’s super nice from you! So happy you enjoy it! 🤩
Hello I don't your name but if you answer I'd be so glad. There is a confusion between upper case "i" and lower case "l" in sans serif fonts that's why I researched fonts but there aren't so many fonts which don't have this confusion so I mean why they don't make fonts with a distinctive "l" charachter?
A study about legibility, not preference would have been more informative.
Bro! Check out ‘Anek’ by Ektype and you’ll unlock a whole another dimension
WOA! Thanks, Ayush! Anek is on my list for a loooong time now, it’s gorgeous!
@@PimpmyType amazing! I got to meet few of the collaborators of the typeface, and I assure you the BTS is even more gorgeous :)
Not a bad font honestly, although there are a lot of technical problems and inconsistencies inside this typeface…
M, W or Z / y or stethoscope? #SmashingConfFreiburg ;)
Can I suggest "Typ1451" by Lineto
But these alternative fonts are nothing like Quicksand... ☹
Asap slaps as always! Omnibus FTW.
If you are looking for content ideas, I'd love to see you cover programming fonts. In recent years, there has been an explosion of monospace fonts supporting beautiful, and easy to read ligatures for common character combination found in code. The font that made ligature popular is named Fira Code, but there are many more. Lately there is also a new trend where some fonts having a completely different typeface for italics. Popular coding editor themes like VS Code use italics for certain programming keywords, and these fonts will make those look more visually distinct compared to plain old slanted characters. For example, the free Recursive font ("Rec Mono Duotone" variant) supports this. Common paid fonts that support this are Monalisa, Cartograph CF, and Operator Mono
May I suggest Arial Rounded MT? /s
it would be better if Alanna had an option to draw and show what she is talking about, when you are discussing the typefaces. She seems very nice. Good new knowledge, thanks
Do you think bricolague grotesque is good for an AI powered customer platform - like hubspot
If it’s used large enough, why not. Has a lot of personality 😉.
I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!!!
And I love you, Jerry!!! 😉
I absolutely love it
It has a lot of advantages 😉.
I think nextjs by default uses Inter and i suspect a lot of products by default using it with next are in trouble now
I wondered about that yesterday, I set text to inter and I didn't look right. Thanks for the info
Happy you found the reason for it in my video 😉.
Damn i missed the live stream :(
Good thing we have a recording 💜
I was able to learn so much from this session, thanks so much to the both of you for sharing your time and knowledge with us. Also, thanks for making this available to those of us who couldn't join it live. :)) 🤓

This is great to hear! Happy it helped. Thank you for watching!
Very informative session! Thank you for doing this, Oliver and Nina. The mutual roasts were fun to watch, and while we can't do that over and over again, it's generally always useful to see site reviews, especially when they focus on one area like accessibility.
Thank you, Darshak! I’m already eager summarizing our session and putting my accessibility to do list together. ☺️
I totally agree, real examples make it easier to understand than just sharing theoretical input. I do hope more reviews are incoming. Thank you for your input!
Thank you for having such an informative session. It was incredibly insightful and provided valuable information on how to make spaces and experiences more inclusive for everyone 🙏
Happy you enjoyed it, Satbir! Also thanks for your encouragement and questions!
Thank you for your feedback! Happy it helped!
Hot take: If you're designing for the web to the pixel, you're doing it wrong. Every style is a suggestion to the browser, and any declaration can be changes or ignored by it, either because of bugs, updates, add-ons or user preferences. If your design breaks because of small font metrics changes, it was already broken to a lot of users out there.
100% this.
Totally agree, your design should be flexible enough to deal with these issues. However, in some cases it might cause individual problems.
your shirt is infuriating and i’m here to take the engagement bait. I don’t mind the typo as much as the keming lol. them being a joke together.. that’s just rubbing salt in the wound
🤪. Love that “keming” insider @rellloom ☺️.
The moment they stopped letting me pick specific sizes is when it died
How do you mean that with specific sizes?
I have yet to see a website, where i decline cookies, change its font because of that. And i refuse to believe they all selfhost their fonts. So arent tons of sites breaking GDPR simply because of that?
Well, they don’t load/store the webfonts via cookies. When a website uses Google fonts to host the fonts, Google could theoretically track your browsing behavior across several websites.
But i know that you need to get the users consent to use remote google fonts. So if they decline my cookie popup, and it does not disable the fonts, then the consent or lack thereoff did nothing? Because Google can still track it then
I'm always using fontsource's packages with a pinned version to prevent this.
That’s a smart approach! And makes you more independent 😉
They did it with Roboto and they’ll do it again. Download your most important fonts, and better, DON’T DESIGN IN A WAY THAT DEPENDS ON THE FONT USED!
… and with Montserrat 😅! Wise words, wise words!
hey, I don’t know if it’s intentional, but your shirt says Typo graHper, I think it supposed to be Typo graPher
i reckon its intentioanl
Its not intentional
I’ll let you decide 😉.
Always self-host your fonts, never trust and relay on third parties, avoid your users being tracked by those third parties, and that includes... never let third parties like Google Fonts auto-update your fonts and broke your site. Own your content.
100%, Brandon!
I always self-host fonts for my website.
LOL
LOL indeed ☺️. Happy you enjoyed it!
The ending was so cute 😆
Oh yes! ❤️ Easter egg for everyone who watches till the end 😉!
