What's interesting about this performance by Palisander is how they have interpreted the instrumentation. I know this piece so well and have played it both on recorders - and on bamboo pipes, for which it was written. Watching very carefully I'm sure the soprano player is playing D using a C fingering - so her recorder is a D soprano. However, what they clearly didn't realise is that VW wrote this for bamboo pipes which had no little finger hole so the D on a soprano pipe was fingered 0123456 - the same as a C recorder. Playing this on a D soprano where 01234567 plays D means that she was not playing the piece with 'natural' fingerings which is how it was intended to be played - and with many cross fingered notes which VW deliberately worked hard to avoid! Similarly the alto, tenor and bass would have originally been in A, D and G respectively - but with no little finger holes so the fundamental notes were all fingered 0123456, so they actually had the same fingerings as G, C and F recorders.

The reason that musical marathons can't be 7 hours like a standard recorder is because musicians deal with 10 hour days for weeks on end.
