This is a shorter version of the original electronic press kit originally produced for Warner Bros. Records in support of Todd Rundgren's release of "2nd Wind". The thirty minute EPK was so well received by Warner Bros. that they decided to commercial release it on VHS. It was also added to a future DVD entitled "The Desktop Collection."

A photo montage from the fall of 2010 while on tour with Todd Rundgren and the greatest friends a person could hope for.
The Lion's name was Volney and he was at the Memphis zoo until he died in 1944. True story. The roar was recorded at the Memphis Zoo in Memphis, TN, USA. That lion has been gone for over 80 years at this point.
Actually this lion was used for the logo starting in the late 50s. One of the earliest films upon which he appeared was “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, which is the IP we scanned to get the best image quality available for the restoration after we were unable to locate the actual film negative of the shoot. Never saw any research of his name being anything other than “Leo”. I would be interested in your source for this information as I did extensive research on the history of the logo when I led the restoration.

Why was the 2008 extended roar never used in any films?
It was, at least on Valkyrie and Quantum of Solace, the later for which the completion of the restoration was order by the new president of MGM.

I could be remembering incorrectly, think his name was Dietz. Went to Columbia in NY, design based on their fight song “Roar, Lion Roar”, in 1916!

That doesn't look like a lion's roar and it's more like a tiger's roar because of the growling was really a tiger's, even Kion's roar from The Lion Guard is more to a tiger's roar than a lion's roar. Lion's roar is more louder and echoic can be heard 5 miles away whereas a tiger's roar is growly and ferocious can be heard 3 miles away.

Variants: A longer variant exists that's basically a 3-lion roar restoration, but was never used.
This actually IS the longer variant that was used when this Lion first appeared on the logo in the late 50’s. We pulled Leo off the original negative (IP actually) from “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof”.

Nope. We did that on purpose. First time in the nearly (at that time) 100 year old logo. Was done to add a hint of depth. You have a keen eye. 👍🏻
