It must have been the wildest, least domesticated beard EVER to appear on stage! Why, a beard like THAT deserves its own comic operetta, something with a libretto by Gogol (but definitely NOT Michael McClure's version!)!

C'est inexplicable! Toutes tessitures confondues, ils ne sont que quelques-uns/quelques-unes à distiller autant de beauté, d'élégance, de puissance et d'"apparente" facilité dans l'histoire du lyrique. C'est injuste pour les autres, mais son timbre et sa couleur sont hors-concours. Sans compter le charisme. Mon chanteur préféré, de très loin. A écouter, à savourer, encore et toujours. Merci mille fois pour cette archive live, c'est un véritable trésor.

Well that was an Ecco il mondo for all time! Ditto for Ella giammai m’amò. He had one of the most gorgeous bass voices in history. His recording of Cole Porter songs, in perfect English, is a real stunner. His Gurnemanz in Parsifal was the most incredible I ever heard.

Good to hear a recording of this old chestnut. I sang this often in student recitals back in the day. It is a piece made for Ramey‘s voice & he does full justice to its demands. Thanks for posting this! I just checked now & there are more than 20 recordings of this Purcell piece on You Tube! Prior to this I had not thought about this aria for years & after hearing Ramey‘s version I became curious & found more recordings of it than I would ever have imagined. Besides Ramey I particularly found renditions by David Thomas & Norman Allin to be excellent as well.

Unequalled !!! Nobody can sing this like he did !!! He was the greatest of all !!!
