I started this channel to focus on my straight razor and various other hobbies.
I’m the owner of Subtle Art Soap Co. When I’m not making soap I’m restoring vintage razors, collecting pocket knives, hunting, skiing, cycling, and a whole host of other outdoor activities. I’ll try and show you a little of everything I consider a hobby.
Thank you for stopping by the channel and I hope you find the videos enjoyable.

Hey Joe! I’ve never even seen a ringtail razor.. OK, I was going to ask you what happened to the new sink bridge and within 30 seconds of the thought coming into my mind you answered my question😅 Between following seas and Draconis Luna… those are two of my favorite scents!! But who am I kidding? I like them all!! Great honing session brother!
@@RobertPascale Thanks Rob! These are cool razors. They were sold by the Smith & Hemenway Co. out of NYC. They came with an “antiseptic case”. I’ve never found one with the case and not sure how that worked..lol. The stone is headed to you next. Thanks for watching!
@ That’s awesome thanks Joe!!
Love the look of that black stone! Seems like you did a good job but I can’t wait to see how it goes with the test shave even if you don’t end up recording it my friend!
Definitely a nice stone to work with. Surprised me a little with the “one stone” approach. Looking forward to testing out the edge.
I beat the Cajun and my other half holy cow! Nice work Joe, that stone looks like it's very enjoyable to hone on. Watching some of the guys on here with how fast they are going up and down a stone is really fun to watch someone that has really mastered that process. I'm not very fast, maybe one day I'll get faster. The amber spice sample you sent me smells so stinking good, I'm going to have to grab some soon!
It was a fun stone to work with. I think it has a lot of range, more than I can put it through. I’m glad you like the Amber & Spice sample. That’s been a popular one since we released it.
What an interesting razor. I have not seen a tail like that before. I used Dawn dish soap to help with getting more bite from the stone. It really took off the metal. It was enjoyable testing all the different methods. Thanks for sharing. Have a good one. Joe.
I found an old ad for the razor. It specifically said for barbers to “hang the razor on a nail”. Probably not the best way to store a straight razor..lol! Thanks for watching!
It makes it unique. That is cool you found an add on it.
You’ll have to keep us posted with a shave test. Great video!
@@UnknownStone-b7w Hope to do one within the next couple days. Thanks for watching.
Very nice Joe! Since it is difficult to raise a slurry on that stone, the stone might be a good base for doing a nagura progression on it. Jacques turned me onto this idea for Black Arks and it was a game changer for me.
@@Greg_Gallant Thanks Greg! That was my thought. Unfortunately I don’t have a nagura set to test it out. I think the next person trying out the stone does. Curious to see how that works. Thank you for watching!
It did work well with other slurry stones. I used coticule, thurigian, zulu grey, and slate on it. It is a good base stone to work with; nice and hard and gives a great keen finish. Very similar to what you can do with an ark.
@@nonamebear1136 Silly for me to judge based on a video, but it did look like a good base. Thanks!
@ Coticule was my first thought.
It was a good evaluation on what you mentioned using naguras. I was just iterating on what I tried with it. I do not have naguras, so I couldn't try them. :)
That was a nice honing session Joe. I've heard good things about Genco razor's, I'll add one to the collection one of these days! That edge looked keen and smooth
@@SeanG8282 Thanks Sean. Genco/Geneva Cutlery, you can’t go wrong. Great steel, hone nice and hold an edge for a while.
The mysteries of the mystery Stone! Lol Great video brother! I would have to agree with Sean. It looks and sounds like a very hard stone, but apparently it gives a good finish. Very nice! It’s warmed up to zero😂
I’m going to work with it a little more, see what I can get from it. You’re up next.
@ 😂 I’m always game to try a new stone! If I had to guess I would say it’s a Zulu black but I have no idea! It’s just a guess
Thanks for the test and review, Jaco will appreciate it. The stones name is "De Endi" or "the end". I am not sure the geological definition of the stone. I am sure he will post more about it when Bundubeard starts selling them this year. I find it very close to the Zulu, maybe more range. I was able to come off 6k to it, whereas the Zulu i come off at 8k or 10k. Just like the Zulu, it took me a few rounds to develop some feel for it. Thanks again Joe.
@@Eric_TheCajunBlade I appreciate the opportunity to give it a test run. I’m going to give it a go with a few other razors. I feel like there is more this stone can do. I’ll try and post my results with another video.
That stone was a pleasure to work with. It had a huge range considering it's a finish stone. You could just about one stone hone on it, from bevel set to polish. Very enjoyable stone to use. I am sure that you will not want it to leave. lol I am curious to try a black shadow and see how it compares. Thanks for sharing. I hope you keep warm.
@@nonamebear1136 I was going to try one stone with it and see how that went. I really enjoy my Black Shadow. The edges I get are always very keen and smooth. I’ll keep working with this stone and see what I can figure out. Thanks for watching!
Great watching you hone. Thanks Enjoy your day.
@@carlangstrom3025 Thank you for watching!
Hey Joe! I hope you’re doing well this Wednesday. That mystery stone looks really hard on camera and the sound as well, almost reminds me of a surgical black stone in what I can hear and see but you also said it’s similar to black shadow? I’m guessing there is more tactile feel. Great looking stone and honing sesh!
@@seanstapelfeld Thanks Sean! It felt similar to my Black Shadow. The edge wasn’t as smooth though. I’m still going to try a few different things before I send it on.
Wow Joe , that 1k Shapton really removes steel 😳 brilliant as a bevel setter , fault remover I love Genco's think I've 2 or possibly 3 , very high-grade steel ,mine are only ⅝" . That mystery stone appears similar slurry colour like an Italian or Welsh slate , or as you said a lalune, how interesting ! 😊.
@@Martins-Shaves123 There were some very small chips in the blade. The 1k took care of them rather fast. I have several Genco razors, excellent steel and they hold an edge for while. Thanks for watching Martin!
@JD_Str8RZR my pleasure 🙏 ☺️
Wow that shapton can move steel ! beautiful razor really enjoyed the video thank you for sharing Joe.
It works great, especially when there’s a problem that needs to be corrected, like this blade had.
Hi Joe. Nice. For me I find skiing on un-groomed terrain much more physically demanding. But that's just me I guess 🙂 nice

Nice. Be careful this can be addictive. Before you know it these yellow brick will get babies;)
@@jpo31 I have a little collection started already. It’s Eric’s fault..😂
One stone honing is always fun.
After watching the video. It sure looked like you took your time and did not dilute too fast. It appeared to be a perfect Dilucot. The 2 mistakes most make is diluting too fast and not enough passes on clean water. Can't wait to go watch the shave
@@Eric_TheCajunBlade One mistake I realized I had been making was not working with a thick enough slurry to set the bevel and not spending enough time in the mid ranges. Now I know how that stone works with a one stone method.
@ you got the tiger by the tail now. It only gets easier from here.
Oh and good luck down the Coti rabbit hole, I'll race you to bottom 🤣😜

Sick video bro ! I was so hoping there would be more ski videos soon. you always deliver Joe, thanks for sharing !
@@Josh.Pascale Pretty good season so far. More videos to come!
Nice hone and commentary Joe! What type of sink bridge is this? I have been considering getting one that does not collect too much water, and has a built in stone holder. The Black Shadow creates a nice edge, and is a pleasure to hone on. If you are considering getting the 16k you might also consider the 0.85 G7 as an alternative. You only need a few strokes, so a full sized stone like the rock star 16k is really a luxury.
@@jpo31 Thank you! The sink bridge is from DMD, I found it on Amazon. I have another one that fits my kitchen sink but it’s too short for this utility sink. I had looked at the G7, that’s on the list as well.
Nice relaxing honing session Joe! I like using a sink bridge as well! They’re very convenient. I was thinking about getting a black shadow, but I already have a Thuringian and a WOA.. going to imagine the edge is pretty similar.. Looking forward to the test shave video with that Wade and Butcher! The funny thing is, I’ve been looking at Wade and Butcher’s lately. Lol we’ll see what happens.. 😅
Thanks Rob! I get into a zone when I’m honing. I don’t realize I stop talking. Helps to keep the video chill I guess..lol. I don’t own a Thuringian or WOA but from watching your videos you may be right about their similarities. You really can’t go wrong with a Wade & Butcher. I can’t recommend them enough!
@ well, I guess now I’m gonna have to get one!😅🤣
@@RobertPascale You won’t regret it!
Great honing seccion Joe! I like these honing videos you make because you make me feel like i'm right there next to you talking with a friend. I would be interested to see if you find any difference between 12k and 16k, I'm guessing you would feel a difference in the shave but i've never had a 16k. The black shadow takes some time to make slurry with the tomo hehe Cheers!
@@seanstapelfeld Thanks Sean! I try and keep it as mellow as I can..lol. I usually do a DMT slurry, I felt like changing it up this time, but yes, it is much slower..lol
Good stuff Joe. Never pass up a W&B in good shape. How do you like your sink bridge? I been considering one, worried about how sturdy they are? The honing looked on point, can’t wait to see the shave.

@@seanstapelfeld Thank you Sean! I appreciate that!
Nice Coti work
@@Eric_TheCajunBlade Thanks Eric. Very impressed with this stone.
I ventured into honing some years ago but I am not certain that I 1. Knew what the hell I was doing and 2. If I was actually making the blade “better”. I have Norton grits up to 8k and one Japanese stone at 12k (my apologies, I cannot recall the name). If I may ask a simple question for those on Joe’s channel that are much more skilled than I, then I would appreciate the advice. First, what is a cuticle and why do I need one? Second, I notice the stone holders that many of you use. In this video, Joe appears to use a wooden (?, I am not sure) piece between the holder and the sink partition. Is this a custom piece of equipment or a “standard” one? Thank you all very much.
@@Wittar7090 Thank you for watching. Sean recently made a video talking about Coticules. He has a link in the description to a great article too. th-cam.com/video/UoL3eqLAUpI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=URnYbPOx61RNqKGK

Thanks Rob! As much as I enjoy the holidays and skiing, it was nice to slow down a little. More skiing to come! ⛷️
Excellent video Joe! I thought it was a little scary looking at the skiing video with all the trees but you’re a pro. Thank you for the kind words! I’m glad you liked the article, Henk Bo’s really did an amazing job creating that and pairing up with Maurice from Ardennes coticule to get that out there. I can one stone hone but usually I would do a progression like you did here, I set my bevel on synthetic then my 4k and then to the coticule. I need to give my synthetic stones some love and I really enjoy them in the early stages. Eric though is a true master with the coticule, I’m not sure if you’ve ever tried his coticule edge but it’s ridiculously good. I have a funny story about Eric’s coticule edge, I hope he doesn’t mind me telling it here but he sent me the edge and told me to shave with it and then scope it. I shave with the razor and oh my good buttery, smooth, and keen keen. When I checked that edge under the scope it was the ugliest thing I’ve seen but the shave was excellent. That was like a “huh, how is this possible” moment 😂 That razor was popping hairs like crazy there at the end Joe! Those razors are nice little things. Cheers 🍻
Thank you Sean! Interesting you mention the Coticule edge being ugly. The comparison you made to the DE in your video was interesting. Astra is one of the smoothest DE blades, but is ugly under a scope. Makes you think about some of the things we’ve been taught about edges.
@ Astra is my favorite DE blade
@@seanstapelfeld It’s my go to DE.

Very pretty Vermont, I’ve got a shadow. I haven’t used maybe I need to take it for a run.
