Removing rust from a Chrome object using Oxalic Acid
มุมมอง 45K11 ปีที่แล้ว
Oxalic acid is a chemical available relatively cheaply from eBay or amazon and plenty of other stores on the Internet. It may also be available from your local DIY store as wood bleach. It is AMAZING for cleaning rust.

    Oxalic acid (solid) is becoming hard to source (UK) due to changes in legislation. Reputable chemical supply houses won't sell solid 99.9% oxalic acid to individuals, and will only sell 9.99% solutions as anything more than 10% has to be restricted to licenced individuals or companies. Something else on the banned list.

    How caustic can an acid possibly be?

    • @philipslater5015
      @philipslater5015 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Caustic generally refers to alkalis like sodium hydroxide (caustic soda). Acids can be be very strong depending on what context you measure strength. A pH zero acid on the 0 to 14 scale would be one mole (molecular weight in grams) of say sulphuric acid, in a litre of water. For sheer destructive power, oleum is hard to beat. Additional Sulphur trioxide dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid will suck the water out of flesh. A fearsome acid is Hydrofluoric acid that will dissolve glass, and Aqua Regia, a mix of Nitric and Hydrochloric acid, will dissolve noble metals like gold. The hydroxides of alkali metals like Lithium, Sodium and Potassium can all hit pH 14 and will dissolve a lot of metals, zinc and aluminium for example. Get them on skin and very quickly the oils and fats in your skin are converted to soap.

      @@Videaddict I saw something similar to this in Colorado on Sept. 12, 2015. There was a huge cloud of lights like this but blinking, around 9 pm, travelling south to north. The lights had be travelling extremely fast because they traversed the entire sky in about 10 minutes. Right when the lights were so far away they were disappearing, we heard a bunch of fighter jets scream (had to be going almost full speed) with their lights off going in the same direction

    HA! I have the EXACT same faucet, but I cut that obnoxious spray nozzle "keeper/holder" off. I use a stainless steel spring to keep the sprayer out of the way, but it easily stretches so you can use it and It retracts out of the way after use.

    Just rinse off your hands afterward. The powder isn't bad, and won't burn you unless you just leave it on your hands for a long time. I don't think its considered a carcinogenic either, so you should be fine unless you have super sensitive hands. I have used floor degreaser that was FAR worse, and handled with much less care than this.

      @@rsceastwindsor1081 I have NEVER heard of someone getting oxalic acid poisoning from handling it... You have to eat it.

    • @philipslater5015
      @philipslater5015 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oxalic acid is a weak organic acid, like acetic, tartaric acids. In it's powder state, it pretty harmless - don't eat it or sprinkle on your cornflakes - but when in solution, that's when it's acidic. It's not in the same league as sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric or phosphoric for dangers. Caustic soda, sodium hydroxide, is a powerful alkali, again relatively safe when dry powder, but lethal when in solution. Sulphamic acid is the strongest solid acid. Oxalic acid works by dissolving the iron oxide and converting it to ferric oxalate. My preferred rust remover is dilute ortho-phosphoric acid with a dash of propanol as a wetting agent. The advantage of phosphoric is that the resulting ferric phosphate acts as a surface protection against further oxidation and can make mild steel go black finish.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@philipslater5015 That's interesting. I know oxalic acid preferentially attacks iron oxide rather than raw iron, but if you let it go too long, it will indeed attack the iron as well.

  • @daddy41dog
    @daddy41dog 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Way too much Oxalic acid is being used and therefore wasted. For that size tub you mention (1 liter), you could get by with a few tablespoons of OA.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is Ideal depends, there is enough water to dissolve all the ocalic acid added, so the difference here is the relative strength of the acid. You can easily get away with adding less, but it will take longer. Time is money :) If faster is worth the cost of wastage, then using 'too much' is better.

      +Videaddict I will. Structurally it's in excellent shape given its age. Luckily it was always stored indoors so it has environmental oxidization, not a lot of full blown rust. I just changed the tires and tubes and had the front wheel straightened. I'll leave the original paint intact and try to preserve the decals as best I can.
