Incredible decision to make the gargoyles work like this. It helps sell how small Quasi feels.

ENSEMBLE, spoken] Quasimodo you must try to free yourself! The girl needs your help! [QUASIMODO, spoken] Quiet! Go away [ENSEMBLE, spoken] You're the only one who can save her now [QUASIMODO, spoken] You know what happens when I try to help I only make things worse [ENSEMBLE, spoken] You don't believe that! [QUASIMODO] How do you know what I believe What do you know of me What do you know of all the things I feel You're only made of stone Who is it that you see Instead of seeing what I am for real This twisted flesh and bone [ENSEMBLE, spoken] Quasimodo, it wasn't your fault! [QUASIMODO] You're a liar! With every new excuse you try out You only make me want to cry out "Would that I were made of stone like you" [ENSEMBLE, spoken] You don't mean that! Just take some time to- [QUASIMODO] You give such good advice So why has not one single word you've said Been any help at all [ENSEMBLE, spoken] Quasimodo... [QUASIMODO] And you who sound so nice The more your dreams and fancies fill my head The farther that I fall Shut my brain down If I were senseless, I'd prefer it Another gargoyle on this turret Spitting rain down to the stones below I've wasted my faith Believing in saints of plaster But the only one worth Believing in was my master He's the one who never lied He told me it was cruel outside He told me how I had to hide His words were cold as stone But they were true Not like you Take all the dreams you've sown Take all your lies And leave me alone [ENSEMBLE] All right, Quasimodo We'll leave you alone All right, Quasimodo We'll trouble you no longer You're right, Quasimodo We're only made of stone We just thought that you were Made of something Stronger [QUASIMODO] And now I'm on my own Never again to wonder what's out there Let it remain unknown And my one human eye Will ever more be dry Until the day I die As if I were made of stone

That voice is the stage manager - he needs to tell the technical team (lighting, sound, pyrotechnics, etc.) when to execute cues. Essentially, his job is to make the director's vision come to life and ensure things proceed in a smooth fashion before, and during the performance run. Also, the camera needed to be placed high up (especially for our viewing pleasure).

My first time seeing this show live. I have been in love with everything Hunchback of Notre Dame since I was young. While some elements of this show were below my expectations, Julian far exceeded everything I hoped for. He was fantastic as Quasimodo and I'd love to see him live again.

C5 is not an easy belt. Pulled it off really well. You did look very tense, so maybe it isn't something you should try doing every day, but nevertheless it sustained magnificently. Think the biggest issue was breath support. Went a little red in the face a couple times and I'm assuming it's because you didn't have enough air. Great performance all around. Wish you had a more respectful audience to perform for, you deserve it.

Thank-you so much for uploading these! I've heard so many great things about the Tuachan production that I wish I could have seen, and it's so nice that I can finally see them here! The sets, the lighting, the fireworks, the use of fire, the inclusion of real animals...all of it is absolutely stunning! I even like hearing the directions given for the cues, as it really makes me appreciate all the work that goes into making a production like this come to life!

I actually got to see The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the Tuacahn Amphitheater in 2016 with my dad. We had front row seats. This is the actor I saw as Quasimodo. He was so amazing. Me and my dad loved him. I still love him. He is my second favorite Quasimodo.

I was reading through the comments I am genuinely shocked as to how many people thought his acting wasn’t great. The more I watch it the more I disagree. First of all he is an equity actor who has played Quasimodo multiple times including in the original La Jolla and papermill production as the understudy for Michael Arden. He is doing a lot of subtle things that are just perfect for the character. For example I love how when he is just talking to gargoyles he doesn’t use a voice because it’s all in his head. One thing that I think people forget is that nobody is perfect. As an actor it’s very difficult to put so much emotion into a character 8 shows a week. So every once in a while an actor gets so exhausted that they just have to put in as much as humanly possible. It’s possible this video was one of those nights for Julian. So just don’t be too quick to judge someone before you’ve put a little research into it. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. As well as if you disagree with what I said. Let me know. I would love to hear your input!

i think you nailed it man, as someone who worked directly with julian (i was a stagehand) on this specific production of hunchback, and i thought he did a great job as quasimodo. he really kinda broke what he did in that role down to a science and made sure every move on stage was exactly what should be happening and the director never questioned it. julian was great to work with on and off stage, great vocalist, pretty good actor, and just a great guy.

    • @OriginalBTW

Slight correction. For the La Jolla production he was the swing, not an understudy. I'm not sure if that was still the case in New Jersey or not. I was in the Choir of the La Jolla production and got to work fairly closely with him. The show is completely different when he plays Quasi instead of Michael. Michael is much more serious and dark whereas Julian liked to play at the jokier more cartoonish side. Both good, but very different. AGAIN this is only based on my experience in the La Jolla Production.

I appreciate the beautiful voice and the high note but I think I have to say Michael Arden still did best because his voice was so raw and crisp. His acting so emotional and spot on. And the speaking voice was perfect with Quasimodo.
